In this research, we proposed the immobilization zone where the organic contaminant would be fixed, so that ground water could be prevented from the organic contaminants. The surfactant was adsorbed on the soil particles and the organic contaminants were partitioned into the hydrophobic tails of the surfactant in the immobilization zone. Surfactants with different molecular structures-SDDBS (sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid), MADS (monoalkylated disulfonated diphenyl oxide), DADS (dialkylated disulfonated diphenyl oxide) - were used in this study. Up to the present, the research on the immolization simulated the saturated condition. But many site contaminated with organic contaminants and the zones where immobilization would be applied are unsaturated. In this research, in order to investigate the behaviors of surfactants and organic contaminants in unsaturated condition, the unsaturated columns were experimented, and their results were compared with the saturated case.
An anionic surfactant, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS), was introduced during the ultrasonication process for exfoliation of graphene. The surfactant plays the roles of exfoliator and stabilizer by binding to the graphene surface. The obtained modified graphene was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and solid state $^{13}C$ CP/MAS NMR to analyze the binding between molecules, and by X-ray diffraction (XRD) to characterize the bulk structure. The resulting graphene exhibited good dispersion stability in both water and organic solvents.
Dielectrophoresis has received considerable attention for separating nanotubes according to electronic types. Here we examine the effects of surface conductivity of semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT), induced by ionic surfactants, on the sign of dielectrophoretic force. The crossover frequency of semiconducting SWNT increases rapidly as the conductivity ratio between the particle and medium increases, leading to an incomplete separation of ionic surfactant suspended SWNT at an electric field frequency of 10 MHz. The surface charge of SWNT is neutralized by an equimolar mixture of anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cationic surfactant cetyltrimenthylammonium bromide (CTAB), resulting in negative dielectrophoresis of semiconducting species at 10 MHz. A comparative Raman spectroscopy study shows a nearly complete separation of metallic SWNT.
Reductive dechlorination of endosulfans was studied with zero valent metals (ZVMs) and bimetals in aqueous batch reactors. The effect of surfactants was evaluated. Endosulfan was successfully dechlorinated with zero valent iron. However, a bimetal, palladium coated iron (Pd/Fe) showed a highly enhanced reactivity for both endosulfan I and II indicating palladium act as a dechlorination catalyst on the iron. The effect of surfactants on degradation with ZVM has been very controvertible. Variable concentration of a nonionic surfactant, Triton X-100 and an anionic surfactant, SDS were added into the reactor with ZVM. The reaction rates of endosulfan were increased with both surfactants. In the case of Triton X-100, the reaction rate was increased with the increasing surfactant concentration up to 400 mg/L. Addition of small amount of surfactant under the CMC, the reaction rate was increased. However, the enhancing effect was diminished when a higher concentration of surfactant (1,000 mg/L) was used. Current study implicate that the surfactant adsorbed on the metal surface might increase the surface concentration of endosulfan resulting in the increased reaction rate. However, partitioning of endosulfan into the micelle formed at the high concentration of surfactant diminish the enhancing effect by reducing the contact chance between target compound and the metal surface.
Several tests were conducted to optimize the design parameters of ln-situ soil flushing processes for diesel contaminated soil. According to the batch extraction test for three anionic surfactants evaluation, Calgonit limiting bubble occurrence was selected for its higher oil cleaning efficiency. After optimum surfactant selection, there were many sets of column flushing test. Over 70% of BTEX was removed in this surfactant dose with 400% of soil volume. In the case of no surfactant addition flushing in column, so called "blank flushing test", BTEX removal rate was 64%. But when we reused the effluent for the cleaning solution, the removal rate was decreased to 46.9%. This result showed reabsorption of oil occurred on the soil. With the addition of Calgonit solution to the diesel contaminated column, BTEX was removed up to 98.9% during the first flushing and 99.4% for the second recirculation flushing. In microcosm tests, diesel contaminated soils were cleaned by both surfactant flushing and biological activities. In anoxic condition, nitrate was used as an electron acceptor while the surfactant and the oil were used an electron donor. BTEX removal efficiency could be achieved up to 80% by biological degradation.
Protein -surfactant interactions have been investigate by measuring ζ-potential of $\beta$-lactoglobulin-coated emulsion droplets and $\beta$-lactoglobulin in solution in the rpesenceof surfactant, with particular emphasis on the effect of protein heat treatment(7$0^{\circ}C$, 30min). When ionic surfactant (SDS or DATEM) is added to the protein solution, the ζ-potential of the mixture is found to increase with increasing surfactant concentration, indicating surfactant binding to the protein molecules. For heat-denatured protein,it has been observed that the ζ-potential tends to be lower than that of the native protein. The effect of surfactant on emulsions is rather complicated .With SDS, small amounts of surfactant addition induce a sharp increase in zeta potential arising from the specific interaction of surfactant with protein. With further surfacant addition, there is a gradual reductio in the ζ-potential, presumably caused by the displacement of adsorped protein (and protein-surfactant complex) from the emulsion droplet surfac by the excess of SDS molecules. At even higher surfactant concentrations, the measured zeta potential appears to increase slightly, possibly due to the formation of a surfactant measured zeta potential appears to increase slightly, possibly due to the formation of surfactant micellar structure at the oil droplet surface. This behaviour contrastswith the results of the corresponding systems containing the anionic emulsifier DATEM, in which the ζ-potential of the system is found to increase continuously with R, particularly at very low surfactant concentration. Overall, such behaviour is consisten with a combination of complexation and competitive displacement between surfactant and protein occurring at the oil-water interface. In addition, it has also been found that above the CMC, there is a time-dependent increase in the negative ζ-potential of emulsion droplets in solutions of SDS, possibly due to the solublization of oil droplets into surfactant micelles in the aqueous bulk phase.
The hydrophobic hydrocarbon chain and the polar sulfate group confer surfactant properties and enable them to be used as anionic surfactants. Anionic surfactants (AS) are known for their adverse impact on environment, particularly on aquatic ecosystem. In the present study a fast, sensitive and selective method for the determination and subsequent quantification of six anionic surfactants was developed using hydrophilic interactive liquid chromatography (HILIC) coupled to a electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometer (MS), in the concentration range 15-20 ${\mu}g/L$. The capability of the method was established using regression analysis and ANOVA. The method performance was evaluated by analyzing real time surface water spiked with 1-dodecyl hydrogen sulfate at 15 ${\mu}g/L$. Combined efficiency of solid phase extraction and MS detection established recovery of 89% in presence of natural matrix. These results point out that HILIC coupled to multistage MS procedures can be a powerful technique for environmental applications concerning the screening of polar contaminants.
Allylaliphatic carboxylate oligomers were prepared from polymerization giving allyl aliphatic carboxylates in the presence of potassium persulfate in methanol and the ${\alpha}-sulfonation$ of these allyl aliphatic carboxylates oligomers were carried by direct addition of dry sulfur trioxide. The dispersing performance of oligomer type anionic surfactants and SDS in the aqueous suspension of $Fe_{2}O_{3}$ and $Tio_{2}$ particles were evaluated by particle size distribution and ${\zeta}-potential$ measurement. As results, the particles of $Fe_{2}O_{3}$ and $Tio_{2}$ were flocculated by addition of small amount of oligomer type anionic surfactants and SDS, then the flocks redispersed by more addition oligomer type anionic surfactants and SDS. The dispersion and flocculation were observed in lower concentration range of oligomer type anionic surfactants than SDS.
The adsorption of the anionic surfactants, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) anion surfactants form aqueous solutions with nonionic resins, Amberlite XAD-2, XAD-4 and XAD-7 at temperatures in 15~45$^{\circ}C$ range was studied. Several adsorption isotherm models were used to fit the experimental data, The best results were obtained with the Redlich-Peterson equation and the Freundlich model provided remarkably good fits. For a particular resin at a particular temperature, SDBS was more extensively adsorbed than SLS. The highest adsorption were obtained with XAD-4 resin and the specific surface area of the resins plays a major role in adsorption of the surfactants. Estimations of the isosteric heat of adsorption were indicative of an exothermic process, and their magnitudes manifested a physisorption process.
The influence of simple electrolyte or anionic trashes on cationic starch adsorption was examined using deinked pulp and bleached thermomechniical pulp. Adsorbed amounts of cationic starches increased slightly , then decreased abruptly as the concentration of simple electrolyte increased. This phenomenon was discussed based on the compression of electrical double layer and conformation change of starch molecules. Also, the effect of the type of simple electrolytes on starch adsorption was examined and discussed. Addition of sodium slilicate increased starch adsorption since it increased surface charge density of fibers. On the other hand, addition of kraft lignin decreased cationic demand of the pulp slurries and adsorbed amounts of cationic starches. Nonionic surfactant did not show any significant effect on the cationic demand of pulp slurries. When simple electrolytes were added to the stock , grater adsorption or cationic starches was obtained with starches of lower degree of substitution . On t도 other hand, amount of adsorbed starches decreased for lower DS starches when the concentration of anionic trashes increased.
