Detergency and surface active properties of mixed anionic surfactants with amphoteric and nonionic were investigated. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and ammonium dodecyl sulfate (ADS) as anionic surfactants and cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB) as an amphoteric surfactant were used. Nonionic surfactants, which are butyl glucoside (BG), octyl glucoside (OG), decyl glucoside (DG), lauryl dimethylamine oxide (AO) and saponin were also used. To study the synergy effects of mixed SDS/ADS anionic surfactant systems, amphoteric and nonionic surfactants were added into the mixed anionic surfactants. Investigated properties of surfactant mixtures were critical micelle concentration (CMC), surface tension (${\gamma}$), wettability. In addition, based on these properties, detergency of each sample was examined. Surfactant mixtures are anionics (SDS/ADS), anionic/amphoteric/nonionic (SDS/ADS/CAPB/saponin), and anionic/nonionic (SDS/ADS/BG/saponin, SDS/ADS/OG/saponin, SDS/ADS/DG/saponin, and SDS/ADS/AO/saponin). With the addition of amphoteric and nonionic to mixed anionic surfactants, CMC and ${\gamma}$ were decreased. Addition of CAPB, which is amphoteric, showed the best property at CMC and ${\gamma}$. Furthermore, as the chain length of hydrocarbon in alkyl glucosides was increased, the CMC and ${\gamma}$ were enhanced. However, the wettability did not exactly match up with CMC and ${\gamma}$. The surfactant mixture, which contained DG, showed the best performance at wetting time. Detergency was measured at various temperatures ($15^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$, $50^{\circ}C$). The cleaning performance was enhanced by increasing washing temperature. Moreover, detergency was influenced by not only CMC and ${\gamma}$ but also wettability. Although CMC and ${\gamma}$ were not minimum at surfactant mixture that included DG, the best cleaning performance showed in that sample.
Anionic radionuclides pose one of the highest risks to the long-term safety assessments of disposal repositories. Therefore, techniques to immobilize and separate such anionic radionuclides are of crucial importance from the viewpoints of safety and waste volume reduction. The main objective of this study is to design a separator with minimum pressure disturbance, based on the concept of a conventional cyclone separator. We hypothesize that the anionic radionuclides can be immobilized onto a nanomaterial-based substrate and that the particles generated in the process can flow via water. These particles are denser than water; hence, they can be trapped within the cyclone-type separator because of its design. We conducted particle tracking analysis using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for the conventional cyclone separator and studied the effects due to the morphology of the separator. The proposed sandglass-like design of the separator shows promising results (i.e., only one out of 10,000 particles escaped to the outlet from the separation zone). To validate the design, we manufactured a laboratory-scale prototype separator and tested it for iron particles; the efficiency was ca. 99%. Furthermore, using an additional magnetic effect with the separator, we could effectively separate particles with ~100% efficiency. The proposed sandglass-like separator can thus be used for effective separation and recovery of immobilized anionic radionuclides.
This study was carried out to improve coating structure by controlling the electrostatic interaction of coating components and by changing the coating structure of coated paper prepared with amphoteric and anionic latices. The results indicated that amphoteric latex copolymerized with carboxylic and amine groups had stronger interaction with other coating components than anionic latex with branched carboxylic group by controlling pH. These properties of amphoteric latex showed positive effects on viscosity rheology, and supernatant sediment of coating color. The coated paper using amphoteric latex had also produced more porous and smoother coverage of the coating layer than that using anionic latex. This porous and smooth coating layer showed better optical properties and printability than those of anionic latex such as opacity, porosity, ink set-off, and wet ink receptivity.
Changes in surface properties and detergency of sunactant mixtures were investigated in order to study the optimum mixing ratio of anionic and nonionic surfactants by measuring surface tension, interfacial tension, suspendability, and emulsification as a Amction of mixing ratio. Also, surface tension and detergency of the surfactant mixtures were determined with the increase of water-hardness or temperature. The results were as follows: the addition of NPE to anionic surfactant solutions (LAS or SDS) by 0.1 mole fraction remarkably decreased surface tension. NPE (n=15)/anionic surfactant mixtures showed a synergistic effect in lowering interfacial tension and emulsification, but NPE (n=7.5)/anionic surfactant mixtures did not. In suspension stability, however, synergism appeared when LAS or 505 was mixed with both of NPE's. With respect to the hydrophile of NPE, NPE (n=15) was more effective than NPE (n=i.5) in improving suspension stability. Detergency of LAS/NPE mixture changed almost linearly with mixing ratio, but that of SDS/NPE mixture increased remarkably by the addition of 0.1 or 0.2 mole fraction of NPE at all temperatures. As the temperature increased, surface tension of surfactant mixtures decreased and detergency was improved, but their synergistic effect decreased. In hard water, the mixtures showed better detergency than single surfactuant solutions.
Second-order rate constants have been measured spectrophotometrically for the reaction of p-nitrophenyl acetate (PNPA) with morpholine, piperazine and piperidine in MeCN-H2O mixtures of varying compositions. The rate of the present aminolysis decreases upon additions of MeCN into H2O up to near 30-40 mole % MeCN and remains nearly constant upon further additions of MeCN. The reaction of PNPA with anionic nucleophiles, such as HO-, p-chlorophenoxide and butane-2,3-dione monoximate, has also exhibited two distinguishable reactivity zones. However, the reactivity trend for the anionic nucleophiles is quite different from the one obtained for the amine system, e.g. an initial rate decrease in the H2O-rich region followed by an increasing rate trend upon further additions of MeCN in the MeCN-rich region. The rate behaviors shown by the amine system in the MeCN-rich and by the anionic system in the H2O-rich region are unexpected based on the Hughes-Ingold rules. The present unusual rate trends have been attributed to changes in the solvent structure and pKa of the nucleophiles upon the addition of MeCN into H2O. The effect of solvent appears to be more significant for the TS than the GS, and the TS structure is considered to become tighter in the higher MeCN concentration.
Effect of cationic starches and anionic colloidal silica on retention and drainage characteristics of Compozil system was investigated. Depending upon the degree of substitution and molecular weight of cationic starches and morphological characteristics of anionic colloidal silica, retention and drainage properties of Compozil system were significantly influenced. When cationic starch addition level increased above a certain limit retention and stock freeness were decreased. To elucidate this an electrostatic coagulation mechanism occurring between unadsorbed starch molecules and anionic colloidal silica was proposed. Unstructured colloidal silica showed greater improvement in retention than structured colloidal silica. Cationic corn starches with different degree of substitution and molecular weights were prepared and their effect as a constituent of Compozil system was also evaluated. By controlling the molecular weight and degree of substitution of cationic corn starch it was possible to achieve significant improvement in fines retention. Cationic corn starch with higher degree of substitution maintained its retention efficiency even when the stock conductivity was increased. Turbidity measurement technique was found to be a simple and useful method to measure the retention characteristics.
The influence of simple electrolyte or anionic trashes on cationic starch adsorption was examined using deinked pulp and bleached thermomechniical pulp. Adsorbed amounts of cationic starches increased slightly , then decreased abruptly as the concentration of simple electrolyte increased. This phenomenon was discussed based on the compression of electrical double layer and conformation change of starch molecules. Also, the effect of the type of simple electrolytes on starch adsorption was examined and discussed. Addition of sodium slilicate increased starch adsorption since it increased surface charge density of fibers. On the other hand, addition of kraft lignin decreased cationic demand of the pulp slurries and adsorbed amounts of cationic starches. Nonionic surfactant did not show any significant effect on the cationic demand of pulp slurries. When simple electrolytes were added to the stock , grater adsorption or cationic starches was obtained with starches of lower degree of substitution . On t도 other hand, amount of adsorbed starches decreased for lower DS starches when the concentration of anionic trashes increased.

This paper dealt with effect of dual component and micropartical retention system on papermaking. First-pass retention under dynamic drainage condition was studied in neutral and alkaline papermaking system. Cationic starches, amphoteric starches and amphoteric polyacrylamide were added prior to high shear force, then anionic. The system is found to be very useful to inprove filler retention. For mitigating unfavorable effect of interfering sub-stances, anionic trash catcher(ATC) such as p-DADMAC was tested in this study.
To estimate dispersion stability of particles in anionic and nonionic surfactant mixed solution, suspending power was examined as functions of duration time of suspension, ionic and nonionic surfactant mixed ratio, surfactant concentration, kinds of electrolyte, ionic strength and mole numbers of oxyethylene additions to nonionic surfactant using $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ particle as the model of particulate soil. The suspending power of anionic and nonionic surfactant mixed solution was relatively higher than that of anionic and nonionic surfactant single solution regardless of solution concentration. The suspending power was gradually decreased with increasing duration time of suspension. In the absence of electrolyte, the effect of surfactant concentration on suspending power was small but in solution with electrolyte, suspending power was lowest at 1 % surfactant concentration. With 1${\times}$10$^{-3}$ ionic strength and polyanionic electrolyte in solution, the suspending power was high but effects of oxyethylene mole number to nonionic surfactant on suspending power was small. Generally the suspending power was gradually increased with decreasing the particle size. Hence the suspending power was inversely related to the particle size.
Second-order rate constants have been determined spectrophotometrically for nucleophilic substitution reactions of p-nitrophenyl benzoate with various anionic nucleophiles including 6 ${\alpha}$ -effect nucleophiles. The logarithmic second-order rate constants for the aryloxides give a good Bronsted correlation with the respective basicity while the ones for p-chlorothiophenoxide and hydroxide exhibit significantly positive and negative deviations, respectivity, from the Bronsted linear line. The deviations are attributed to a solvation effect rather than a change in the reaction mechanism. The ${\alpha}$-effect nucleophiles except highly basic ones demonstrate significantly higher nucleophilicity (the ${\alpha}$ -effect) than would be predicted from the respective basicity. The effect of solvation and polarizability appears to be important for the ${\alpha}$-effect as well as for the reaction rate.
