The expansivity of clayey soils is a complicated phenomenon which may affect the stability of geotechnical structures and geo-environmental projects. In all common factors for the monitoring of soil expansion, less attention is given to anion type of pore space solutions. Therefore, this paper is concerned with the impact of various concentrations of different inorganic salts including NaCl, $Na_2SO_4$, and $Na_2CO_3$ on the macro and microstructure behavior of the expandable smectite clay. Comparison of the responses of the smectite/NaCl and smectite/$Na_2SO_4$ mixtures indicates that the effect of anion valance on the soil engineering properties is not very pronounced, regardless of the electrolyte concentration. However, at presence of carbonate as potential determining ions (PDIs) the swelling power increases up to 1.5 times compared to sulfate or chloride ions. The samples with $Na_2CO_3$ are also more deformable and show lower osmotic compressibility than the other mixtures. This demonstrates that the barrier performance of smectite greatly decreases in case of anions with the non-specific adsorption (e.g., $Cl^-$ and $SO{_4}^{2-}$) as the salinity of solution increases. Based on the results of the X-ray diffraction and sedimentation tests, the high soil volumetric changes upon exposure to carbonate is attributed to an increase in the repulsive forces between smectite basic unit layers due to the PDI effect of $CO{_3}^{2-}$ and increasing the pH level which enhance the buffering capacity of smectite. The study concluded that the nature of anion through its influence on the re-arrangement of soil microstructure and osmotic phenomena governs the hydro-mechanical parameters of expansive clays. It seems not coinciding with the double layer theory of the Gouy-Chapman double layer model.
The species and equilibria of uranium and vanadium have been investigated in the various concentration of perchloric, hydrochloric and sulfuric acid by anion exchange chromatography. In the concentration range of $0.01\;{\sim}\;0.5M$ hydrochloric and $0.01\;{\sim}\;0.5M$ perchloric acid, uranium seems to be $UO_2^{2+}$species and in higher concentration than 0.5M hydrochloric acid $UO_2^{2+}$seems to form the chloride complex ion as $UO_2Cl^+$, $UO_2Cl_2$, $UO_2Cl_3^-$ and $UO_2Cl_4^{2-}$ according to the increase of the hydrochloric acid concentration. In the dilute(0.01N) sulfuric acid the adsorbability of uranium on anion exchange resin is strong and then decreases with increasing the sulfuric acid concentration. From this result we conclude that $UO_26{2+}$ formed the complex ion as $UO_2(SO_4)_2^{2-}$. In the perchloric acid of $0.01\;{\sim}\;0.5N$ concentration the existing equilibrium of vanadium and its constant calculated at $20^{\circ}C$ is $1.9{\times}108$ for $H_2V_{10}O_{28}^{4-}$ + $14H^+$ = $10VO_2^+ + 8H_2O$. The elution behaviors of vanadium in the hydrochloric and sulfuric acid are smiliar to those in perchloric acid.
A novel kinetic method for determination of $HO_2{^{\cdot}}/O_2{^{{\cdot}-}}$ in ozone decomposition in water is described. In this study, potential interferences of $O_3$ and the hydroxyl radicals, $^{\cdot}OH_{(O3)}$, are suppressed by $HSO_3{^-}/SO_3{^{2-}}$. $HO_2{^{\cdot}}/O_2{^{{\cdot}-}}$ formed in ozone decomposition reduces $Fe^{3+}$-EDTA into $Fe^{2+}$-EDTA and subsequently the well-known Fenton-like (FL) reaction of $H_2O_2$ and $Fe^{2+}$-EDTA produces the hydroxyl radicals, $^{\cdot}OH_{(FL)}$. Benzoic acid (BA) scavenges $^{\cdot}OH_{(FL)}$ to produce OHBA, which are analyzed by fluorescence detection (${\lambda}_{ex}=320nm$ and ${\lambda}_{ex}=400nm$). The concentration of $HO_2{^{\cdot}}/O_2{^{{\cdot}-}}$ in ozone decomposition has been determined by the novel kinetic method using the experimentally determined half-life ($t_{1/2}$). The steady-state concentration of $HO_2{^{\cdot}}/O_2{^{{\cdot}-}}$ is proportional to the $O_3$ concentration at a given pH. However, the steady-state concentration of $HO_2{^{\cdot}}/O_2{^{{\cdot}-}}$ in ozone decomposition is inversely proportional to pH values. This pH dependence is due to significant loss of $O_2{^{{\cdot}-}}$ by $O_3$ at higher pH conditions. The steady-state concentrations of $HO_2{^{\cdot}}/O_2{^{{\cdot}-}}$ are in the range of $2.49({\pm}0.10){\times}10^{-9}M(pH=4.17){\sim}3.01({\pm}0.07){\times}10^{-10}M(pH=7.59)$ at $[O_3]_o=60{\mu}M$.
Three-season field study was conducted to investigate the distribution of monoterpene(10) and air anion in ambient air at five forests. ${\alpha}$-Pinene, camphene, sabinene, ${\beta}$-pinene, myrcene, terpinolene, limonene, 1,8-cineol, linalool, and camphor were quantified in the samples collected. The highest 4-hour mean concentration of total monoterpene were ${\beta}$-pinene+myrcene as 958 pptv at Juknokwon dominated by bamboo and ${\alpha}$-pinene (524 pptv), limonene (445 pptv) at Wood Land and Suncheon Bay, respectively. The seasonal means were observed to peak during spring with their maximum at Wood Land and Seonam Temple and during summer at Juknokwon and Suncheon Bay. The 24 hour concentration mean of atmosphere standards were found with much lower values than those by law. The highest concentrations of air anion were measured $400{\sim}3,000ea{\cdot}mL^{-1}$ through the sites. There is no significant correlation between the concentration of monoterpene and air anion.

This study was investigated to analyze the antioxidant activity or extracts form Elaeagnus multiflora Thunb for development to the functional materials. The antioxidative activities of water ethanol and methanol extracts from the Elaeagnus multiflora Thunb were analyzed by electron donating ability (EDA), anti-oxidization activity, superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity, The superoxide anion radical-scavenging activity, and nitrite scavenging ability. The Etectron donating ability of methanol extract was higher in 1.0 mg/mL of extraction solution than those of ethers. The anti-oxidization activity of ethanol and methanol extracts by thiocyanate method using linolenic acid system was higher than those of the water extract. The SOD-like activity was increased with increase of the extract concentration in each extracts. The SOD-like activity was highest in 2.0 mg/mL of methanol extract. The superoxide anion radical-scavenging activity was increased with increase of the concentration in the ethanol extract and methanol extract. The nitrite scavenging ability of water extracts in 1.0 mg/mL of extraction soiution in pH 1.2 was higher than ethanol extrats and methanol extracts. The nitrite scavenging ability of all extracts was decreased according to increase of pH.
The non-porous and porous polystyrene divinylbenzene copolymers were prepared by the suspension polymerization method. The non-porous aminated polystyrene divinylbenzene, N-APSTDVB and the porous aminated polystyrene divinylbenzene, P-APSTDVB of 50∼100mesh size weakly basic anion exchanger were synthesized by chloromethylation followed by amination with methylamine. The functional groups of these synthesized anion exchangers were confirmed by their infrared spectra. The maximum capacity of these exchangers was 4.86meq/g. Pore volume and pore spectra were determined with a mercury porosimeter. The pore volume of P-PSTDVB increased with increasing X$_{diluent}$ at 30% of divinylbenzene. However, the pore volume of P-PSTDVB increased with increasing volume percent of divinylbenzene at constant mole fraction of diluent, X$_{diluent}$ of 0.5. The pore volume of synthesized copolymer and anion exchanger at 8% divinylbenzene and 0.5X$_{heptane}$ decreased as follows; P-PSTDVB 〉P-APSTDVB 〉N-PSTDVB. This result was attributed to the possibility that the pore volume were reduced by amination reactions. The distribution coefficients of boric acid on the N-APSTDVB anion exchanger in various concentrations of alcohol water solutions showed that as alcohol concentration increased, the distribution coefficients values decreased due to the reduced concentration of H$_2$BO$_3^-$.
The aim of this study is to examine the radical scavenging activity of perilla and sesame oil that Koreans traditionally consume. For DPPH radical scavenging activity, oil and its hexane/70% methanol extracts (ME) are used and for superoxide and hydroxyl radical scavenging activities, ME are used. Unrefined perilla oil, sesame oil, and refined sunflower oil are used. The yields for ME of perilla, sesame and sunflower oil are 0.57, 0.61, and 0.30%, respectively, and the amounts of phenolic compounds in ME of corresponding oil are 18.77, 88.64 and $0.05\;{\mu}g$ tannic acid/mg, respectively. $IC_{50}$ for DPPH scavenging activity of perilla, sesame and sunflower oil are 2.12, 1.91, and 3.35 mg/mL, respectively and those for ME of corresponding oils are 0.42, 0.07, and 43.11 mg/mL, respectively. In DPPH assay, the solvent used for oil sample is iso-octane and that for ME is methanol. Superoxide anion scavenging activity of ME of perilla, sesame and sunflower oil tested at 1 mg/mL concentration are 21.10, 13.25, and 3.14%, respectively. Hydroxyl radical scavenging activities of those samples tested at 1 mg/mL concentration are 86.08, 93.30, and 93.17%, respectively. In summary, the refining process seems to remove the phenolic compound during oil processing. Antiradical substances in perilla and sesame oils responsible for scavenging DPPH radicals are present in the methanol fraction, while the antiradical substances in the sunflower oil are in the lipid fraction. DPPH scavenging activity of ME of sesame oil is significantly higher than that of perilla oil (p<0.05). However, superoxide anion scavenging capacity of ME of perilla oils was found to be greater than that of both sesame and sunflower oils (p<0.05).
The selective absorption of metal ions by chelating agent-loaded resins was studied in aqueous media. The resins were prepared by loading the conventional anion exchange resin, Dowex 1-X8 (50 to 100 mesh) with chelating agents containing sulfonic group, such as 8-hydroxy-quinoline-5-sulfonic acid (HQS) and 7-nitroso-8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonic acid (NHQS). The stability of the resin was markedly influenced by the following factors; (1) the affinity and concentration of anions in the external solution, (2) the pH of the media. The optimum conditions for the absorption of metal ions were determined with respect to the pH, shaking time, and the effect of anion concentration in the medium. Under the optimum condition the order of the absorption of metal ions such as Fe(Ⅲ), Cu(Ⅱ), Pb(Ⅱ), and Zn(Ⅱ) was in accord with that of the stability constants of the chelates. The total capacities of the resins were found in the range of 0.6∼1.6 mmole metal per gram.
In this study, novel pore-filled anion-exchange membranes (PFAEMs) with low electrical resistance, high permselectivity, and low water-splitting flux property under a concentration polarization condition have been developed for the enhancement in the efficiency of electrochemical water treatment processes. The base membranes have been prepared by filling a copolymer containing quaternary ammonium groups with an excellent ion-exchange capability into a porous polyolefin substrate, showing a high performance superior to that of a commercial membrane. In addition, it was confirmed that the electrochemical membrane performances are preserved while the water-splitting flux is effectively controlled by coating an imidazolium polymer onto the surface of the base membrane. The prepared PFAEMs revealed remarkably low electrical resistances of about 1/6~1/8 compared to those of a commercial membrane, and simultaneously low water-splitting flux comparable with that of cation-exchange membranes under a concentration polarization condition.
A kinetic study for anion exchange was performed for commercially available Cl- type anion exchange resin in use to remove nitrate in water. The obtained results from the batch reactor were applied to the Langmuir and Freundlich models. The constants for Lagmuir model were qmax =29.82 and b=0.202, and for Freundlich model were K=5.509 and n=1.772. Langmuir model showed betterfit than Frendlich model for the experimental results. Ion exchange reaction rate was also calculated and the the approximate first-order reaction, rate constant k1 was 0.16 L/mg.hr. Effective diffusion coefficient was obtained in the range from $9.67$\times$10^{-8} cm^2/sec$ for initial concentration change, and from $6.09$\times$10^{-7} to 3.98$\times$10^{-6} cm^2/sec$ for reaction temperature change. Activation energy during the diffusion was calculated as 26 kcal/mol.
