  • We describe tubular structures on the cuticle of two representatives of the genus Gordius by scanning electron microscopy. One female from Korea could not be identified further while a male from New Zealand belonged to Gordius paranensis. Other male specimens of G. paranensis did not show tubular structures or the corresponding pores on the cuticle. Therefore it is assumed that tubular structures are not species-specific structures, but also no artifacts or contaminations. They might be glandular products, but this has to be verified by further documentations and investigation of the inner structure of it.

  • Two new species of the genus Psammocinia (Dictyoceratida, Irciniidae), P. bergquisti n. sp. and P. gageoensis n. sp., are described from Gageodo Island (Sohuksando Island), Korea. P. bergquisti n. sp. is characterized by the thumb like appearance and secondary fibre which makes a broad plate or secondary web while other known species in Psammocinia has many narrow and simple secondary fibres. P. gageoensis n. sp. is very similar to P. mosulpia Sim 1998 in shape, but primary fibre of the new species has more complex fascicles and it is difficult to see the detritus in the fibre. The primary fibre of this new species is cored with the smaller sand than that of P. mosulpia.

  • The morphogenesis of the marine ciliate, Pelagostrobilidium simile Song and Bradbury, 1998, was investigated using pyridine silver carbonate impregnation. The morphogenesis of P. simile is of hypoapokinetal mode. The oral primordium of P. simile commences slightly below the external membranelles (EM) with the proliferation of an anarchic field. Somatic ciliature in proter and opisthe of P. simile are derived from the old structure with the proliferation of the basal bodies during the dividing process. Parental oral apparatus of P. simile is inherited by the proter, and no reorganization of oral apparatus was observed in the parental oral infraciliature.

  • A study on marine sponges was conducted by SCUBA diving at Ulleungdo Island and Gageodo Island, Korea during the period from July 2000 to October 2001. Two species, Clathria (Clathria) gombawuiensis n. sp. and Clathria (C) gageoensis n. sp., are new to the fauna of sponges. Clathria (C) gombawuiensis n. sp. closely relates to Clathria (C) conica Levi, 1963 based on the type of spicules, but differs in size of spicules and growth form, Clathria (C) conica has not small toxa. Clathria (C) gageoensis n. sp. is similar to Clathria (C) hexagonopora Levi, 1963, but it differs in size of spicules and growth form, also Clathria (C) hexagonopora has not small toxa.

  • The Korean peninsula has diverse habitats and so would be expected to have a rich millipede fauna because of its location between the Paleoarctic and Oriental regions. To facilitate studies on millipedes, this work provides an updated list and discussion of Korean millipedes. A total of 69 species had been recorded up to 2010, but since then no new species have been reported. Among 69 species, 49 are endemic to the Korean peninsula. From 1950 to the present, an average of only seven new species from the Korean peninsula has been described per decade. This number does not reflect the biodiversity of millipedes in Korea, especially when compared to Taiwan, which has only one-third the area of the Korean peninsula, but from which a greater number of millipede species have been recorded (75 vs. 69 species). Japan has twofold the land area of the Korean peninsula, and an almost threefold higher number of millipede species. Further, more-intensive surveys will likely result in identification of more millipede species in the Korean peninsula.

  • Korean nannastacids have recorded only eight species belonging to genera Campylaspis and Cumella. In this paper, Nannastacus nyctagineus Gamȏ, 1962, is redescribed and illustrated as a new species of Korean fauna in this study for the first time. Korean female specimens of Nannastacus nyctagineus correspond well with the original description by Gamȏ, 1962 based on only female specimens. Gamȏ has described that new species, Nannastacus pruinosus could be distinguished from N. nyctagineus based on only male specimens. The Korean male specimens of N. nyctagineus undoubtedly match well with the description of N. pruinosus with the following common features: the surface of the carapace is covered with numerous granules; pereonites and pleonites have similar patterns of the teeth on dorsal surface; the proportion and armature of the dactylus of pereopod 2 is similar; the number and pattern arrangement of the setae on the surface in antenna 1, pereopod 1, and uropod are the all most same. Nannastacus pruinosus Gamȏ, 1962 is proposed as a synonym of N. nyctagineus described in this study. This represents the first record on the genus Nannastacus from Korea.
