육수 개발을 위한 수조육류 및 부재료의 최적 배합비율에 관한 연구 (Study on Appropriate Mixing Ratios of Various Animal Meats with Other Ingredients to Improve the Palatability of Stock)

  • The objective of this study was to develop a stock that can be used to make a variety of dishes. For this, stock was prepared with beef, chicken, and pork meat as animal meats as well as anchovy, mushroom, and sea tangle as other ingredients. The qualities of six[only four though] kinds of stocks made with beef only (B), beef and chicken (BC), beef and pork (BP), and beef added with chicken and pork (BCP), and seven kinds of stocks made with anchovy (A), mushroom (M), sea tangle (S), anchovy and mushroom (AM), anchovy and sea tangle (AS), mushroom and sea tangle (MS), and anchovy added with mushroom and sea tangle (AMS) were investigated by sensory evaluation. The most preferred stock made with animal meat was mixed with the most preferred stock made with other ingredients at a 5% level to test the synergistic effects of palatability. As a result, BCP stock and AMS stock obtained the highest scores for overall preference. BCP stock within the range of 30%-65% along with the mixed stock containing AMS (35%-70%) showed synergistic effects for palatability.

Storage characteristics of organic chicken stock containing plum extract and green tea powder

  • This study investigated quality characteristics of chicken stock with added plum extract (PE) and green tea powder (GP) stock during storage. Plum extract (0, 0.5, 1, 3%) and green tea powder (0, 0.5, 1, 3%) were added at three levels. Chicken stock was stored at room temperature for 14 days. The pH of the chicken stock decreased significantly as the content of PE and GP increased (p < 0.05). The group with 3% plum extract added showed significantly lower pH values (p < 0.05). Total numbers of microorganisms (TMC) showed significant differences according to the storage period (p < 0.05), where the groups with PE and GP added showed lower TMC values than the control group, This indicates that PE and GP could inhibit the growth of microorganisms. The addition of 3% PE or GP decreased lipid oxidation (TBARS) and protein deterioration (VBN) values. In sensory test, the results showed that adding PE or GP has a positive effect on storage characteristics of chicken stock. The addition of PE rather than GP is effective not only in improving sensory evaluation, but also in minimizing changes in quality by suppressing lipid oxidation and protein deterioration during storage. In conclusion, 3% PE addition was found to be the most optimal supplementation choice for increasing the storability of chicken stock.

Impact of an AI Heifer Calf Rearing Scheme on Dairy Stock Development in the Western Province of Sri Lanka

  • This study evaluated the impact of an AI heifer calf rearing scheme on dairy stock development, in a coconut grazing and a peri-urban smallholder dairy production system in the Western Province of Sri Lanka. The heifer rearing scheme included free advice on calf rearing, drugs, acaricides, minerals and subsidised concentrates for 30 months. The farmers in the coconut growing area integrate dairying with their plantation, they sell their milk to the main processors. The peri-urban farmers are intensive milk producers, who sell their milk at informal markets. To estimate the effect of the heifer rearing scheme on dairy replacement stock development, scheme farmers were compared with farmers who did not participate in the scheme. Calf mortality was twice as high in non-scheme farms (23-28%) as in scheme farms (12-14%). The scheme had a positive effect on weight development and scheme heifers calved 4.5 months earlier than non-scheme heifers. The calf rearing package is cost effective in both farming systems, however, the required cash inputs are a major constraint. The costs per in-calf heifer under the scheme are much lower than the production of such animals by either multiplication in state farms or importing them. The coconut grazing system showed the highest potential for producing surplus dairy stock.

Establishment of a special pathogen free Chinese Wuzhishan Minipigs Colony

  • To meet the increasing demands of specific pathogen free (SPF) minipigs in biomedical researches, 8 pregnant Chinese Wuzhishan minipigs (WZSP) sows with clear background were chosen to obtain SPF WZSP by hysterectomy. At $111{\pm}days2$ of the pregnancy, piglets were aseptically taken out from the sows and artificially suckled for 40 to 45 days in the positive isolators. Then, the piglets defined as F0 were transferred to barrier environment and fed with standard feeds. The original SPF colony was formed for breeding by selected piglets from F0 group of 6-8 months old. Biological characteristics of SPF WZSP were collected and further compared to those of conventional (CV) WZSP, including growth performance, reproductive performance, hematology and blood biochemistry, and major pathogens detection. As a result, 61 F0 piglets were obtained from 8 candidate sows, and 55 out of them survived. After strictly selection, 35 F0 piglets were used to form the original SPF colony, which produced 14 litters of SPF piglets defined as F1. Piglet survival rates, growth performance, and reproductive performance of SPF WZSP were similar to CV WZSP. Some hematology and blood biochemistry parameters showed significant differences between SPF and CV WZSP. Eighteen kinds of pathogens were identified to be free in F0 and F1 SPF colony by repeated pathogen detections. In conclusion, we established a satisfied SPF WZSP colony maintaining original characteristics, free of controlled diseases, and being proved to be a suitable laboratory animal.

Production Performances of Japanese Quail Parent Stock under Open Housing System

  • The study was carried out to assess the production performances of Japanese quail parent stock raised under open housing system and the study was conducted in a local farm with 2000 Japanese parent stock quail birds (Coturnix coturnix japonica). Observed body weight gain was recorded in each weekend up to 7 weeks of their age; birds gained weight 15.73, 31.45, 47.20, 90.80, 125.27, 153.14 and 175.20 grams, respectively. There have been observed sharp decline of fertility and hatchability of birds with increase of their age. Optimum fertility was recorded at third week and optimum hatchability at fifth week of their age. Average flock uniformity was found 83.68%. The hen day egg production of the flock was recorded 81, 83, 85, 86, 89, 89, 89, 89 and 88% in each weekend, respectively. It may therefore be concluded that Japanese quail parent stock performs well under open housing system in Bangladesh and future study can be taken to better understand their production performances.

Do Government Subsidies Crowd In or Crowd Out R&D Investment? Evidence from China's Animal Husbandry Companies

  • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to empirically investigate the relationship between government subsidies and research and development (R&D) investment of animal husbandry companies in China. The moderating effects of firm size, debt ratio, and firm profitability on this relationship are also examined. Research design, data and methodology: The analysis is based on 14 animal husbandry companies listed on the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges over the period of 2012-2016. Data are obtained from the China Stock Market & Accounting Research (CSMAR) database and the RESSET database, and multiple regression analysis is utilized with the aid of Stata. Results: The empirical results show that government subsidies can promote R&D investment of animal husbandry companies in China. In addition, firm size, debt ratio, and firm profitability have positive moderating effects on the relationship between government subsidies and R&D investment. Conclusions: Based on the results, the paper concludes that government subsidies play an important role in the process of R&D of China's animal husbandry companies. This paper recommends that managers of animal husbandry companies should enhance the utilization efficiency of government subsidies and put great emphasis on R&D investment. The policymakers should implement more incentives to encourage animal husbandry companies to invest more in R&D.

  • Retrovirus vector를 이용한 형질전환 동물의 생산에 있어서 시급히 선행되어야 할 가장 중요한 요소는 표적세포에 대해 높은 감염도를 가진 virus를 생산하는 system의 개발이다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위한 일환으로 본 연구에서는 세 가지 방법을 사용하여 세포 배양액 속의 virus의 농도를 높여줌으로써 retrovirus vector system에서 생산되는 virus의 낮은 감염도를 극복하고자 하였다. 이 실험에서 얻어진 결과는 다음과 같다. 1) Virus를 생산하는 세포(pG13-LN$\beta$Z retrovirus producing cell)를 5mM의 Na-butyrate로 처리했을 때 virus titer는 소의 embryonic trachea 표적세포에서 약 3배의 증가를 나타냈다. 2) Virus가 들어있는 세포 배양액을 ultrafiltration을 통해 농축한 결과, 농축액 속의 virus titer는 대조구에 비해 약 3.6배 증가하였다. 3) 초원심분리를 통해 농축된 virus stock의 titer는 소의 embryonic trachea 표적세포에서 약 1.0$\times$105LacZ+TU/ml였는데 이 방법은 대조구에 비해 약 12.5배 만큼의 titer의 향상을 가져왔다. 따라서, 이와같이 농축된 virus stock을 이용할 경우 retrovirus vector system을 이용한 소의 수정란에의 유전자 전이율을 현저히 향상시킬 수 있으리라 사료된다.

  • Eosin B의 사용에 의한 rat 난모세포의 생존성 및 발달가능성을 검사하였다. 염료는 Brinster's Medium for Ovum Culture puls glucose (BMOC)-2 medium ml당 eosin B 1.0mg을 함유하는 stock solution으로 준비하였다. 난모세포연구를 위하여 BMOC로 stock solution을 희석하여 만든 3가지의 염료농도들이 선택되었다 : 0.12mM, 0.60mM, 1.20mM. 난소세포들로부터 난모세포들을 채취하고, 보존기간 및 열 처리의 다양한 조건하에서 eosin B를 사용한 dye exclusion assay로 검사하였다. 생존한 난모세포는 eosin B를 배척하고, 사멸한 세포는 eosin B를 배척하지 않는 것으로 제시되었다.

Increasing Production in Korean Shrimp Farms with White-Spot Syndrome Virus PCR-Negative Brood Stock

  • White-spot syndrome virus (WSSV) is a devastating, infectious virus affecting shrimp. Although sensitive techniques involving PCR have been developed to assist farmers in screening shrimp (brood stock) for WSSV prior to stocking ponds, such practices have not yet been applied in Korea. Despite the rationality of implementing screening, there has been some doubt as to whether the stocking of WSSV-PCR-negative fly epidemiologically decreases white-spot disease outbreaks. Here, we report a retrospective analysis of data from shrimp farms in the western coast of Korea where WSSV-PCR-negative brood stocks were used to stock rearing ponds. A total of 366 shrimp from Heuksan Island were sampled for WSSV with PCR. Of the tested shrimp, 7.2% (28 brood stocks) were identified as WSSV positive; only WSSV-PCR-negative shrimp were used for brood stocks. Total unit production (final shrimp production/ the area of the ponds) was higher, at 1.96, in ponds where WSSV-PCR-negative shrimp were used, as compared with 1.02 in other ponds in Korea in 2004. This retrospective analysis of WSSV in Korea may be useful to the shrimp aquaculture industry, suggesting a testable hypothesis that may contribute to the eventual control of WSSV outbreaks.
