Thirty rabbits underwent femoral lengthening using monolateral external fixator to evaluate results and complications of limb lengthening. Twenty rabbits survived until consolidation of callus formed at the lengthening site after finishing lengthening. Ten rabbits were sacrificed during femoral lengthening because of complications. Survived 20 rabbits were classified to two groups according the amount of lengthening: group I (10% lengthening of the femoral length); group II (20% lengthening). There was no significant difference of consolidation time between two groups (p=0.25). Varus angulation at the lengthening site occurred in 60% of two groups and the amount of varus angulation in group II was larger than that of group I. Degenerative change of articular cartilage at the medial condyle of the distal femur was found in 30% of group II. Of sacrificed ten rabbits, 5 had pin loosenings with pull an of pins from the femur, 2 had fermoral fractures around the pin-tract site, and 3 had severe osteomyelitis of the femur around the pin-tract site.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate how the friction that occurs during the sliding movement of the archwire through esthetic brackets is differently affected by bracket materials, slot designs, and tip angulations of the archwire. Methods: Eight types of brackets with 0.018 inch slots (composite: Brillant (BR); composite with metal slot: Spirit MB (SP); ceramic: Inspire (IN), Signature (SI), Cristaline V (CR); ceramic with metal slot: Clarity (CL), Luxi II (LU); and metal bracket: Integra (IT)), and placed into groups of 20 brackets in each group, were tested in artificial saliva with 0.018 inch stainless steel wire. The wire tip angulations were given as 0, 4 and 8 degrees. Results: CR group significantly showed the lowest frictional force with all wire tip angulations of 0,4, and 8 degrees. IN significantly showed the highest frictional force (p < 0.001). BR (polyoxymethylene) had significantly less frictional force than SP (polycarbonate) (p < 0.001) and showed no significant difference between metal brackets. Friction was increased as the wire tip angulations were increased, but no notches were observed on any parts of the archwire. Conclusions: According to the results of this study, esthetic brackets are superior or similar to 55 brackets from a frictional point of view.

Early identification of maxillary canine impaction is very important, because of treatment duration time. Analysis used by 3-dimensional computed tomography is more important than before in treatment planning. The aim of this study was to analysis of factors associated with the treatment during time of forced eruption of the impacted maxillary canine using 3-dimensional computed tomography. 17 patients were analysed in Daejeon dental hospital of Wonkwang university(16 patients with unilateral impactions and 1 patient with bilateral impaction). In total, 18 maxillary impacted cannines were analysed by 3-dimensional computed tomography. The results obtained were as follow; 1. There was positive correlation between the age of patient and treatment duration time. 2. There was positive correlation between the distance of occlusal plane to cusp of maxillary impacted canine and treatment duration time, and negative correlation between the length of maxillary impacted canine and treatment duration time. 3. There was positive correlation between the angulation of midsagittal plane to axis of maxillary impacted canine and treatment duration time, and negative correlation between occlusal plane to axis of maxillary impacted canine and treatment duration time. In conclusion, age, tooth length, distance from the canine cusp tip to the occlusal plane, angulation of tooth axis to occlusal plane and midsagittal plane allow that we can predict treatment duration time.
Making a precise and ideal set-up model is an essential part in the indirect bonding procedure for lingual orthodontic treatment. To evaluate the accuracy of the making a set-up model, 22 adult patients who received lingual orthodontic treatment with 4 bicuspid extractions were selected, and 3 sets of dental models (before, set-up, and after treatment) were measured using the set-up model gauge, an instrument for measuring the inclination and angulation of the clinical crowns on the dental model. Two sets of lateral cephalograms (before and after) from each patient were also evaluated. The mean difference between the before treatment model and the set-up model was $-3.93{\pm}6.98^{\circ}$ for the inclination and $1.87{\pm}5.79^{\circ}$ for the angulation. And the mean difference between the set-up model and the after treatment model was $-4.31{\pm}5.91^{\circ}$ labiolingually and $-2.16{\pm}3.27^{\circ}$ mesiodistally, The after treatment model differed from the before treatment model about $-8.24{\pm}5.39^{\circ}$ in inclination. There were no significant difference between the measured gauge that measured from the dental model using the set-up model gauge and the calculated gauge angle measured from the lateral cephalogram using constructed points and lines. Using the set-up model gauge, it is possible to evaluate the study model 3-dimensionally in relation with the patient's lateral cephalogram and establish whether the doctor's prescription or overcorrection is built in the set-up model precisely.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the displacement and pattern of stress distribution on periodontal ligaments of maxillary first and second molar, and on orthodontic mini-implant (OMI) surface, according to three different insertion angles to the bone surface of OMI using Dragon helix appliance, which is a newly introduced scissors-bite correcting appliance. OMI were placed between second premolar and first molar with three different insertion angles (45, 60, 90 degrees). Displacement and maximum stress distribution area (MSDA) were analyzed by finite element analysis. When the insertion angle to the alveolar bone surface was 90 degrees, maxillary first and second molar both exhibited MSDA at the palatal root apex. Maxillary first molar did not show any significant displacement, while the second molar exhibited intrusive and palatal displacement. On the OMI, as the insertion angle decreased, the MSDA shifted towards the tip, and the amount of displacement had increased. When the OMI was inserted at a 90 degree angle, anchor loss was minimized and scissors-bite correcting effect was maximized.
Statement of problem: Br${\aa}$nemark or ITI are two currently most widely used implant systems but with contrasting design, surgical and restoration methods. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare changes and its statistical significance in bone height and shape which may rise due to the differences between two implant systems. Also to analyse the effect of inter-implant distance on annual bone height changes. Material & Method: Those patients who were treated with two or more of either Br${\aa}$nemark or ITI implants at posterior mandibular area at Yonsei University Dental Hospital, Implant Clinic were selected. At annual examination appointments, standardised radiographs using parallel technique were taken. Marginal bone and inter-implant crestal bone changes were measured and following results were obtained. Results: 1) When ITI and Br${\aa}$nemark system were compared, both annual marginal and inter-implant crestal bone height changes in ITI system in the first two years were smaller than Br${\aa}$nemark and they were statistically significant. On the third year, however, there was no statistical difference between two implant systems on their annual bone level changes (p>0.05). 2) The Marginal and inter-implant crestal bone changes were compared when inter-implant distance was less than 4mm. Statistically significant bone level changes were noted on the first year only for ITI implants but in the first and second year for Br${\aa}$nemark implants (p>0.05). 3) When comparing angulation changes between marginal bone and implant fixture, ITI system had smaller angulation changes but the annual changes were not statistically significant (p>0.05). Conclusion: Within the limitation of this study, it could be concluded that Br${\aa}$nemark implant systems had more changes in marginal and inter-implant crestal bone level in the first and second year after loading with statistical significance. Further studies are recommended to see the effects of these bone loss during the first and second year after loading on the long term prognosis of Br${\aa}$nemark Implants.

The present study was designed to compare morphological and structural relationships between basicranial measurements such as MCF angulation (Ar-SE-ptm), saddle angle (N-S-Ba, N-S-Ar) and facial structures including types of malocclusion. Twenty six children with Class III whose longitudinal headfilms were available from 7 to 12-year-old, and also 26 cross-sectional headfilms at each ages of 8, 9, 10 and 11 with Class I were selected for the investigation. Cephalometric measurements such as Ar-SE-ptm, N-S-Ba, N-S-Ar, N-SE-Ar, SNA, SNB, N-S/PM vert, CP/PM vert, $\underline{1}/FH$ plane, and $N-perp/\underline{1}$ were measured. Morphologic relationships and pattern of changes in facial structures in relation to the changes of MCF and saddle angle in both malocclusion types were analysed statistically employing ANOVA, t-test and Pearson correlation. Results suggest that the MCF rather than the saddle angle in children with Class I and III is more closely related with various facial structures and with their changes. It may be, therefore, suggested that the MCF be one of the biologically meaningful measurements in determining structural relationships between cranial base and facial complex including types of malocclusion. In addition, the MCF and its correlated facial structures in children with Class III, interestingly, showed somewhat marked changes between the ages of 9 and 11.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the morphological characteristics of the roots and roots canals of primary molar teeth using Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). A total of 68 CBCT images of children aged 4 - 5 years was used for this study. A total of 160 molar teeth were analyzed. Various parameters such as the number of roots and canals, length of root and root canal, and the angulation and shape of the roots were analyzed. All maxillary primary molars had 3 roots. The presence of 2 root canals in 1 root was only observed in the mesiobuccal root of maxillary primary second molars. Most mandibular primary molars had 2 roots, and most mesial roots had 2 root canals. Concerning the length of the roots, the palatal root of the maxillary primary molar was found to be longest whereas the distobuccal root was shortest. In mandibular primary molars, the mesial root was longer than the distal root. In maxillary primary molars, the palatal root had the greatest angulation whereas the distal root has the greatest in mandibular molars. The root and root canals of maxillary primary molars were more curved in shape whereas mandibular primary molars were straight.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate a 3-Dimensional laser scanner for the space analysis after loss of a primary first molar. Six children with premature loss of a primary first molar were examined using study models taken before and after the extraction. The results were as follows: 1. There was no change in primary molar space after the extraction of a maxillary primary first molar However, 2 out of 3 children experienced primary molar space loss in extraction side of a mandibular primary first molar. 2. Arch width and arch perimeter showed no difference between initial and final model. 3. All primary canines did not show any changes in inclination. Maxillary primary second molars had similar changes in both extraction and control side. However, 2 out of 3 mandibular primary second molars in extraction side showed more lingual tipping compared to control side. Mandibular permanent first molars tipped more lingually in extraction side. 4. In angulation, primary canines showed nothing of significance. Mandibular primary second molars tipped more mesially in extraction side than in control side. Maxillary permanent first molars have increased distal angulation after extraction of primary first molars in both side.

Panoramic radiographs of a dry skull were used to evaluate the accuracy of four panoramic dental X-ray systems in determining tooth angulations in the buccal segments. The four machines evaluated were the Philips Oralix Pan DC, the GE panelipse, the SS White panorex 1, and the SS White Panorex 2. Panoramic radiographs were taken at six different patient positions for each machine to evaluate the effects of patient positioning on determining tooth angulations in the buccal segments. All of the machines studied showed a significant correlation between the mean radiographic estimates and the actual measurements regardless of positioning(p<0.05). With correct placement of the skull, the results were analyzed for an error tolerance of +/-3/sup 0/ between the actual measurements and the radiographic estimates for tooth angulation. The SS White Panorex 1 was accurate 74% of the time, the GE Panelipse was accurate 67% of the time, the Philips Oralix Pan DC and the SS White Panorex 2 were accurate 64% of the time. When an error tolerance of +/-5/sup 0/ was permitted, the accuracy was 89% for the SS White Panorex 1 and the GE Panelipse, 85% for the Philips Oralix Pan DC, and 81% for the SS White Panorex 2.
