  • Monthly mean data of Angstrom exponent and Aerosol optical thickness (AOT) from Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) measurements over the East Asian waters were analyzed. Increasing trend of the satellite-derived Angstrom exponent was found over 1998-2006 while AOT mean was observed stable during the same period. Statistical test showed that annual increase in Angstrom exponent of about 0.01 is statistically significant over three study sub-areas out of six surrounding waters of Japan. Comparison with Aqua/MODIS-derived Angstrom exponent time series over June 2002 through June 2008 showed consistent correlation, with similar statistical significance. The trend of Angstrom exponent was interpreted as increase in fraction of small aerosol particles to give quantitative estimates on the variability of aerosols. The mean increase is evaluated to be about +0.35%/yr or more in terms of the contribution of small particles to the total AOT, or sub-micron fraction (SMF).

  • In this article, we suggest a new method for measuring an aerosol's extinction coefficient using a commercial camera. For a given image, we choose three pixel-points that are imaged for the same kinds of objects located in similar directions. We suggest and calculate aerosol extinction coefficients from these RGB gray levels and the different distances of the three objects. To compare our measurement results, we also measure extinction coefficients using lidar. Finally, we find that there are meaningful and sensible correlations between these two measurements, with a correlation coefficient of 0.86. We measure the aerosol extinction coefficient at three different RGB wavelengths using the same method. From these aerosol extinction coefficients at three different wavelengths, we find that the Angstrom exponent ranges from 0.7 to 1.6 over a full daytime period. We believe that these Angstrom exponents can give important information about the size of the fine particles.

  • While global solar radiation is an essential input variable in crop models, the observation stations are relatively sparse compared with other meteorological elements. Instead of using measured solar radiation, the Angstrom-Prescott model estimates have been widely used. Monthly data for solar radiation and sunshine duration are a convenient basis for deriving Angstrom-Prescott coefficients (a, b), but it is uncertain whether daily solar radiation could be estimated with a sufficient accuracy by the monthly data - derived coefficients. We derived the Angstrom-Prescott coefficients from the 25 years observed global solar radiation and sunshine duration data at 18 locations across South Korea. In order to figure out any improvements in estimating daily solar radiation by replacing monthly data with daily data, the coefficients (a, b) for each month were derived separately from daily data and monthly data. Local coefficients for eight validation sites were extracted from the spatially interpolated maps of the coefficients and used to estimate daily solar radiation from September 2008 to August 2009 when, pyranometers were operated at the same sites for validation purpose. Comparison with the measured radiation showed a better performance of the daily data - derived coefficients in estimating daily global solar radiation than the monthly data - derived coefficients, showing 9.3% decrease in the root mean square error (RMSE).

  • The vertical profiles of the extinction coefficient, the backscatter coefficient, and the lidar ratio (i.e., extinction-to-backscattering ratio) for Asian dust and pollution aerosols are determined from Raman (inelastic) and elastic backscatter signals. The values of lidar ratios during two polluted days is found between 52 and 82 sr (July 22, 2009) and 40~60 sr (July 31, 2009) at 52 nm, with relatively low value of particle depolarization ratio (<5%) and high value of sun photometer-derived Angstrom exponent (> 1.2). However, lidar ratios between 25 and 40 sr are found during two Asian dust periods (October 20, 2009 and March 15, 2010), with 10~20% of particle depolarization ratio and the relatively low value of sun photometer-derived Angstrom exponent (< 0.39). The lidar ratio, particle depolarization ratio and color ratio are useful optical parameter to distinguish non-spherical coarse dust and spherical fine pollution aerosols. The comparison of aerosol extinction profiles determined from inelastic-backscatter signals by the Raman method and from elastic-backscatter signals by using the Fernald method with constant value of lidar ratio (50 sr) have shown that reliable aerosol extinction coefficients cannot be determined from elastic-backscatter signals alone, because the lidar ratio varies with aerosol types. A combined Raman and elastic backscatter lidar system can provide reliable information about the aerosol extinction profile and the aerosol lidar ratio.

  • Models to estimate solar radiation have been used because solar radiation is measured at a smaller number of weather stations than other variables including temperature and rainfall. For example, solar radiation has been estimated using the Angstrom-Prescott (AP) model that depends on two coefficients obtained empirically at a specific site ($AP_{Choi}$) or for a climate zone ($AP_{Frere}$). The objective of this study was to identify the coefficients of the AP model for reliable estimation of solar radiation under a wide range of spatial and temporal conditions. A global optimization was performed for a range of AP coefficients to identify the values of $AP_{max}$ that resulted in the greatest degree of agreement at each of 20 sites for a given month during 30 years. The degree of agreement was assessed using the value of Concordance Correlation Coefficient (CCC). When $AP_{Frere}$ was used to estimate solar radiation, the values of CCC were relatively high for conditions under which crop growth simulation would be performed, e.g., at rural sites during summer. The statistics for $AP_{Frere}$ were greater than those for $AP_{Choi}$ although $AP_{Frere}$ had the smaller statistics than $AP_{max}$ did. The variation of CCC values was small over a wide range of AP coefficients when those statistics were summarized by site. $AP_{Frere}$ was included in each range of AP coefficients that resulted in reasonable accuracy of solar radiation estimates by site, year, and month. These results suggested that $AP_{Frere}$ would be useful to provide estimates of solar radiation as an input to crop models in Korea. Further studies would be merited to examine feasibility of using $AP_{Frere}$ to obtain gridded estimates of solar radiation at a high spatial resolution under a complex terrain in Korea.

  • Empirical models including the Angstrom-Prescott (AP) model have been used to estimate solar radiation at sites, which would support a wide use of crop models. The objective of this study was to estimate two sets of solar radiation estimates using the AP coefficients derived for climate zone (APFrere) and specific site (APChoi), respectively. The daily solar radiation was estimated at 18 sites in Korea where long-term measurements of solar radiation were available. In the present study, daily solar radiation and sunshine duration were collected for the period from 2012 to 2021. Daily weather data including maximum and minimum temperatures and rainfall were also obtained to prepare input data to a process-based crop model, CERES-Rice model included in Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT). It was found that the daily estimates of solar radiation using the climate zone specific coefficient, SFrere, had significantly less error than those using site-specific coefficients SChoi (p<0.05). The cumulative values of SFrere for the period from march to September also had less error at 55% of study sites than those of SChoi. Still, the use of SFrere and SChoi as inputs to the CERES-Rice model resulted in slight differences between the outcomes of crop growth simulations, which had no significant difference between these outputs. These results suggested that the AP coefficients for the temperate climate zone would be preferable for the estimation of solar radiation. This merits further evaluation studies to compare the AP model with other sophisticated approaches such as models based on satellite data.

  • Monthly mean data of ${\AA}ngstr{\ddot{o}}m$ exponent and Aerosol optical thickness (AOT) from Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) measurements over the East Asian waters were analyzed. Increasing trend of the satellite-derived ${\AA}ngstr{\ddot{o}}m$ exponent from 1998 to 2004 was found while AOT mean was observed stable during the same period. The trend of ${\AA}ngstr{\ddot{o}}m$ exponent is then interpreted as increase in fraction of small aerosol particles to give quantitative estimates on the variability of aerosols. The mean increase is evaluated to be $4{\sim}5%$ over the 7-year period in terms of the contribution of small particles to the total AOT, or sub-micron fraction (SMF). Possibilities of the observed trend arising from the sensor calibration or algorithm performance are carefully checked, which confirm our belief that this observed trend is rather a real fact than an artifact due to data processing. Another time series of SMF data (2000-2005) estimated from the fine-mode fraction (FMF) of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) supports this observation yet with different calibration system and retrieval algorithms.

  • Tropospheric aerosols are highly variant in time and space due to non-uniform source distribution and strong influence of meteorological conditions. Backscatter lidar measurement is useful to understand vertical distribution of aerosol. However, the backscatter lidar equation is undetermined due to its dependence on the two unknowns, extinction and backscattering coefficient. This dependence necessitates the exact value of the ratio between two parameters, that is, the lidar ratio. Also, Iidar ratio itself is useful optical parameter to understand properties of aerosols. Tropospheric aerosols were observed to understand variance of lidar ratio at Anmyeon island ($36.32^{/circ}N$, $126.19^{/circ}E$), Korea using a multi-wavelength raman lidar system developed by the Advanced Environmental Monitoring Research Center (ADEMRC), Gwangju Institute Science and Technology (GIST), Korea during measurement periods; March 15$\sim$April $16^{th}$, 2004 and May 24$\sim$ $8^{th}$ 2005. Extinction coefficient, backscattering coefficient, and lidar ratio were measured at 355 and 532 nm by the Raman method. Different types of aerosol layers were distinguished by the differences in the optical properties such as Angstrom exponent, and lidar ratio. The average value of lidar ratio during two observation periods was found to be $50.85\pm4.88$ sr at 355 nm and $52.43\pm15.15$ sr at 532 nm at 2004 and $57.94\pm10.29$ sr at 355 nm and $82.24\pm15.90$ sr at 532 nm at 2005. We conduct hysplit back-trajectory to know the pathway of airmass during the observation periods. We also calculate lidar ratio of different type of aerosol, urban, maritime, dust, continental aerosols using OPAC (Optical Properties of Aerosols and Clouds), Remote sensing of atmospheric aerosol using a multi-wavelengh lidar system with Raman channels is quite and powerful tool to characterize the optical propertises of troposheric aerosols.

  • This study aims to analyze the vertical distribution of Asian dust measured by LIDARs at three weather stations in Baengnyeongdo (BND), Munsan (MS), and Gunsan (GS) during 10~11 May 2010, and thereby investigate their effectiveness. Asian dust passed through from central to south-western part of Korea. Although dust particles were detected over the surface in MS and GS, LIDAR data showed that the Asian dust with non-spherical particles was observed in all of the three regions. It seems that the naked-eye observation could not detect dust over the surface of BND due to the temperature inversion below a height of 0.45 km. During the Asian dust events, the duration time of dust presented 9.5 hr (BND), 19.5 hr (MS), and 24.5 hr (GS), respectively with the longest time in GS, whereas dust altitudes ranged from 0.4 to 1.3 km (BND), 0.1 to 2.8 km and 4.1 to 4.2 km (MS), and 0.2 to 2.0 km (GS), respectively, while showing the highest altitude in MS. Aerosol optical thickness (AOT) retrieved by LIDAR and skyradiometer (SR), located close to the LIDAR sites, was compared. MS (LIDAR) and Seoul (SR) attained the AOT of 0.64 and 0.50, and GS (LIDAR) and Gongju (SR) attained the AOT of 0.38 and 0.54, respectively. As SR-derived angstrom exponents (AE) during the time period determined as Asian dust by LIDAR data were 0.17 in Seoul (near MS) and 0.30 in Gongju (near GS), it can be said that the characteristics of dust particles were appeared. During the study period, depolarization ratio could serve as a useful indicator to determine dust aerosol. But, it still seems essential to conduct further investigation with longer period of data to better describe the discrepancy of AOT between LIDARs and SR.
