Location-aware visualization of VRML models in indoor location tracking system

  • For many applications particularly in navigation system, a three-dimensional representation improves the usability of information. This paper introduces 3D Graphical User Interface (GUI) of indoor location tracking system, 3D Navigation View. The application provides users a 3D visualization of the indoor environments they are exploring, synchronized with the physical world through spatial information obtained from indoor location tracking system. It adopts widely used Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) to construct, represent, distribute and render 3D world of indoor environments over Internet. Java, an all-purpose programming language is integrated to comprehend spatial information received from indoor location tracking system. Both are connected through an interface called External Authoring Interface (EAI) provided by VRML. Via EAI, Java is given the authority to access and manipulate the 3D objects inside the 3D world that facilitates the indication of user's position and viewpoint in the constructed virtual indoor environments periodically.

  • Recently, research activities for combining portable computer technology and wireless communication technology are in progress to realize mobile computing environment that designed to support mobile hosts in the existing network environments. For PCN environments, the location management strategies are particularly emphasized among various strategies necessary for the mobile computing environment. Location management strategy for PCN environment, which is mostly based on the IS-41 standards brings an issue that additional network traffics are generated to deliver updata messages to home location server whenever a mobile host changes its location server. In this paper, we propose an innovative updata strategy and a search strategy that resolves the problem shown in the IS-41 scheme for HLR/VLR structure of CDMA environments. Also, this paper presents the performance comparison of proposed scheme and scheme used in IS-41 obtained from a simulation. The simulation was conducted based on the number of messages, the rate of database accesses, and the number of hops visited when the location management scheme is executed.

Location Error Analysis of an Active RFID-Based RTLS in Multipath and AWGN Environments

  • In this paper, we analyze the location accuracy of real-time locating systems (RTLSs) in multipath environments in which the RTLSs comply with the ISO/IEC 24730-2 international standard. To analyze the location error of RTLS in multipath environments, we consider a direct path and indirect path, in which time and phase are delayed, and also white Gaussian noise is added. The location error depends strongly on both the noise level and phase difference under a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, but only on the noise level under a high SNR regime. The phase difference effect can be minimized by matching it to the time delay difference at a ratio of 180 degrees per 1 chip time delay (Tc). At a relatively high SNR of 10 dB, a location error of less than 3 m is expected at any phase and time delay value of an indirect signal. At a low SNR regime, the location error range increases to 8.1 m at a 0.5 Tc, and to 7.3 m at a 1.5 Tc. However, if the correlation energy is accumulated for an 8-bit period, the location error can be reduced to 3.9 m and 2.5 m, respectively.

A Wireless Location-Based Routing Algorithm in Multi-User Game Environments

  • In this paper, we propose a wireless location-based routing algorithm which uses the location information of its neighbor nodes and a destination node. At first, the proposed routing algorithm forwards a packet to the X direction by selecting a closest node to its destination as a next hop in terms of the X coordinate until the packet reaches closely to the packet's destination. Then the packet is forwarded to the Y direction by selecting a closest node to its destination in terms of the Y coordinate. We use a back off mechanism in case that a next hop cannot be found using the proposed routing algorithm, which resolves loops while forwarding. The experimental results show that the proposed routing algorithm performs well like the existing routing algorithms Ad hoc On-demand Distance Vector and Greedy Perimeter Stateless Routing. It is expected to use the proposed routing algorithm in the digital battlefield of military environments and survival games of commercial environments.

  • Indoor localization is becoming one of the most important technologies for smart mobile applications with different requirements from conventional outdoor location estimation algorithms. Fingerprinting location estimation techniques based on neural networks have gained increasing attention from academia due to their good generalization properties. In this paper, we propose a novel location estimation algorithm based on an ensemble of multiple neural networks. The neural network ensemble has drawn much attention in various areas where one neural network fails to resolve and classify the given data due to its' inaccuracy, incompleteness, and ambiguity. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first to enhance the location estimation accuracy in indoor wireless environments based on a neural network ensemble using fingerprinting training data. To evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed location estimation method, we conduct the numerical experiments using the TGn channel model that was developed by the 802.11n task group for evaluating high capacity WLAN technologies in indoor environments with multiple transmit and multiple receive antennas. The numerical results show that the proposed method based on the NNE technique outperforms the conventional methods and achieves very accurate estimation results even in environments with a low number of APs.

An Effective TOA-based Localization Method with Adaptive Bias Computation

  • In this paper, we propose an effective time-of-arrival (TOA)-based localization method with adaptive bias computation in indoor environments. The goal of the localization is to estimate an accurate target's location in wireless localization system. However, in indoor environments, non-line-of-sight (NLOS) errors block the signal propagation between target device and base station. The NLOS errors have significant effects on ranging between two devices for wireless localization. In TOA-based localization, finding the target's location inside the overlapped area in the TOA-circles is difficult. We present an effective localization method using compensated distance with adaptive bias computation. The proposed method is possible for the target's location to estimate an accurate location in the overlapped area using the measured distances with subtracted adaptive bias. Through localization experiments in indoor environments, estimation error is reduced comparing to the conventional localization methods.

A Close Contact Tracing Method Based on Bluetooth Signals Applicable to Ship Environments

  • There are still outbreaks of COVID-19 across the world. Ships increase the risk of worldwide transmission of the virus. Close contact tracing remains as an effective method of reducing the risk of virus transmission. Therefore, close contact tracing in ship environments becomes a research topic. Exposure Notifications API (Application Programming Interface) can be used to determine the encountered location points of close contacts on ships. Location points of close contact are estimated by the encountered location points. Risky areas in ships can be calculated based on the encountered location points. The tracking of close contacts is possible with Bluetooth technology without the Internet. The Bluetooth signal can be used to judge the proximity among detecting devices by using the feature that Bluetooth has a strong signal at close range. This Bluetooth feature makes it possible to trace close contacts in ship environments. In this paper, we propose a method for close contact tracing and showing the risky area in a ship environment by combining beacon and Exposure Notification API using Bluetooth technology. This method does not require an Internet connection for tracing close contacts and can protect the personal information of close contacts.

  • In this paper we develop an indoor location tracking system and its 3D tracking monitoring viewer, viz., 3D Navigation Viewer (3DNV). We focus on the integration of an indoor location tracking system with the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML), to facilitate a representation of the user's spatial information in virtual indoor environments that is synchronized with the physical location environment. The developed indoor location tracking system employs beacons as active transmitters, and a listener as a passive receiver. The distance information calculated from the difference speeds of RF and Ultrasonic signals is exploited, to determine the user's physical location. This is essential in supporting third parties like doctors and caregivers in identifying the activities and status of a particular individual via 3DNV. 3DNV serves as a unified user interface for an indoor location tracking system, showing the viewpoint and position of the target in virtual indoor environments. It was implemented using VRML, to provide an actual real time visualization of the target's spatial information.

  • When a mobile robot performs in unknown environments, a location identification is an essential task. In this paper, we propose a location identification system that uses a sensor space without additional devices on the robot. Also the sensor space consists of a matrix of CDS sensor; when a robot was positioned on the CDS sensor, we can estimate the coordinate of the location by sensing a light. Based on KS illumination standard, experiments are performed in various environments. By evaluating the experimental results, we can show that the proposed system can be applicable to the location identification system of a moving robot.

  • UGVs(Unmanned Ground Vehicles) are robots that can substitute humans in reconnaissance operations of potentially dangerous and contaminated sites. Currently, there have been active research on utilizing UGVs in military environments. Much resrach has been focused on exploiting the weakness of topology-based routing and instead utilize location-based routing for the networking of UGVs. It is generally assumed that location-based routing methods can fully utilize the location information gained from GPS. However, this may not be possible in tactical environments due to enemy GPS jamming and LOS(Line of Sight) limitations. To solve this problem, we propose a location-based routing scheme utilizing low control message that can calibrate the location information using GPS information as well as location of neighboring UGV, movement direct and speed information. Also utilizing topology-based routing scheme to solve incorrect location information in GPS jamming region.
