Objective : Osim((惡心) stands for nausea which usually precede vomiting(嘔吐). Although it is very common symptom, we can't find the word Osim in some ancient classics. So we tried to find when it had appeared, and what had been its substitute in former medical classics. Material and Methods : The digitalized text in Zhonghuayidian(中華醫典) was used for text search. The text search was performed chronologically. Results : We found that there had been yokto(欲吐), yokgu(欲嘔), geongu(乾嘔), beon(煩), beonsim (煩心), simbeon(心煩), min(悶), ongi(溫氣) as the precedent expression of osim(惡心), which had appeared in Jebyungwonhuron(諸病源候論, 610) for the first time. Conclusion : Until Tang dynasty, there had been kinds of alternative expressions correspond to osim(nausea).
Yifangleiju is a collection of medical books that consists of 266 volumes. It is a very important set of data in studying ancient Asian medicine because it systematically organized the many medicine-related data of Eastern Asia. But it was never published again after its 30th volume was published in 1477, and only a single copy remains in Japan today. Because this book is valuable it has been republished in China based on the copy in Japan. This study is a study of the many problems that occurred in the process of republishing Yifangleiju in China.
"The Golden Mirror of Medicine(醫宗金鑑)" was compiled by the medical officers of the Qing government, headed by Wu-Qian(吳謙)."The Elimination &Supplement about the Famous Prescription Comments(刪補名醫方論)", a collection of notes written by famous scholars, is one part of "The Golden Mirror of Medicine(醫宗金鑑)" . Through the translation and comparative study of invigorative prescription(補氣方劑) in "The Elimination & Supplement about the Famous Prescription Comments(刪補名醫方論)" of "The Golden Mirror of Medicine(醫宗金鑑)" with "The Famous Prescription Comments on Ancient and Modem Times(古今名醫方論)" , we confirmed that many sentences of "The Famous Prescription Comments on Ancient and Modern Times(古今名醫方論)" were quoted, but that most of the text was not quoted as the same: it was revised and supplemented. In organization, invigoration prescriptions are placed at the head of the chapter, indicating their importance. In classification, prescriptions for reinforcing middle-jiao(中焦) and replenishing qi(補中益氣湯類 方劑) were usually included in the invigoration prescriptions(補氣方劑), which is explained in chapter II, thereby clearly distinguishing between treatments of deficiency of qi(氣虛) and combining it with the sinking of qi of middle-jiao(中氣下陷).
Lee Jema said in his book, Dongui Susebowon, that the prescriptions for Soum constitutional type were already developed by doctors during the Song Jin Yuan China around 10th-13th century. Those prescriptions were common techniques that were used throughout the East Asian region. Among them, Lee Jema specially selected some candidate formulas and modified them according to his constitutional theory. This study investigated how similar his modified prescriptions to original formulas through database[ancient formula database] analysis. 24 out of 24 Soum prescriptions selected meaningful ingredient herbs from the original formula. A 50% or higher concordance rate compared to the original formulas. There are only 9 treatment prescriptions that cannot be checked in the ancient formula database. A future task will be to reveal the practical meanings of the ingredients Lee Jema adjusted for the Soum constitutional type patients.
This literature review focuses on external treatments for the throat, as found in the classic Korean text, Hyang-Yak-Jib-Sung-Bang Throat. Sections of the text related to external treatment of throat disorders were reviewed. Examples of frequently used external methods include gargling, application of powder, and brushing of the throat. These methods are still used in modern Korean Medicine treatments for Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) disorders. This discussion is provided with intention to invigorate the ancient practices of throat treatments, by highlighting benefits and results of the therapeutic protocols described in Hyang-Yak-Jib-Sung-Bang Throat. Discovering new effective herbal medicines and developing more precise external treatments will advance ENT treatment in Korean medicine.
Objectives : The Dongui Bogam in My Hand', which is an output of computerizing Donguibogam (Principles and Practice of Eastern Medicine), is an interim outcome of the research project led by the Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine. This study examined the process in which Donguibogam, a record in Chinese and a classic of Oriental medicine, expanded into a modern content. Methods : This study will classify the modernization of Donguibogam into three 'contents' that form Donguibogam, 'container' that will hold the contents, and 'community' that is the consumer of Donguibogam. Towards the end, this study will sketch out the status of computerizing Chinese records in Korea, and point out the reality faced by computerization of ancient documents on Oriental medicine as well as the direction for the future. Results : 'The Dongui Bogam in My Hand' has been downloaded more than 10,000 times for 4 months since it releases in August 2014, and is used for at least 6,000 times on average every month. This achievement can be due to the two following reasons. First, the application contains high-quality contents such as the original text of Donguibogam as well as Korean and English translations. Second, it satisfied the needs of Donguibogam users with (1) the Browse function that well displays the table of contents, (2) the Search function that separates the title from the main text, and (3) the Personalization function designed to link and share relevant knowledge. Conclusions : Computerization of Chinese records was triggered by the request of the academia, but it was accelerated after being selected as a public laboring project to overcome the IMF crisis. However, computerization of ancient documents is not a simple task but a field of study to modernize classical knowledge. The success or failure of computerization of Chinese records is determined by whether high-quality modern 'contents' are secured, whether the 'container' design adequately implements the search, browse and link functions, and how well it fulfills the needs of the consumer 'community'.
Lisangsokdanbang is the oldest known medical document in existence. It is, however lost-its original copy could not be traced. But the contents of Lisangsokdanbang quoted in Uibangyuchwi, a document published in Chosun in 1447. Thus this study aims to restore the contents of Lisangsokdanbang based on Uibangyuchwi and present the synthesis of facts on Lisangsokdanbang extracted from the reference books.
Objectives : This paper aims to analyze the origins of the pathogenic qi[邪氣] concept through analysis of related character shapes and examples within the Mawangdui Yishu, where we can grasp the state of medicine pre-Huangdineijing. Methods : Etymology was determined through ancient character analysis, while examples of its usage and original texts were compared to extract their implications. For usage analysis, medical texts of later periods that contained similar verses or contents with the Mawangdui text were compared, through which similarities and changes in meaning of the word or verse were examined. Conclusions : While the term 'xieqi(邪氣, pathogenic qi)' had not yet been mentioned in the Mawangdui text, 'eqi(惡氣)' was used similarly. Wind[風], cold[寒], dampness[濕] were not only understood as terms referring to weather or climate but possible causes for disease. Meanwhile, there was lingering belief from the Shang(商) period that saw disease as God's punishment, which could be seen as transition phenomenon from superstition to rational thought. Through diseases 'wind disease[風病]' and 'bi(痹)', we could determine that medicine at the time was limited to the Yin-yang theory, having not yet integrated the Five phases perspective. Moreover, the possibility of other pathogenic qi elements, 'heat[暑]', 'dryness[燥]', and 'fire[火]' could be assumed to have been embedded in 'wenbing(溫病)'.
Objectives : This paper seeks to contribute to restoring ancient literature related to Bianque through literature analysis of the fifth volume of "Maijing(脈經)". Methods : Literature referenced in the fifth volume of "Maijing(脈經)" which are "Huangdineijing(黃帝內經)", "Nanjing(難經)" among others were examined. Results & Conclusions : The fifth volume of "Maijing(脈經)" cites "Huangdineijing(黃帝內經)", "Nanjing(難經)", "Bixi Zhenfa(敝昔診法)", "Ni Shun Wu Se Mai Zang Yan Jing Shen(逆順五色脈藏驗精神)" etc. Based on the question and answer format of the text, it seems the fifth volume of "Maijing(脈經)" is a collective of three different lines of medical texts. It shows traces of Bianque's Zangfu theory where the Stomach is considered as one of the Five Zangs instead of the Spleen. It also contains the diagnostic method of symptom expression time based on distance between sites of pathological expression. Moreover, description of the number of pulses during one cycle of breathing (inhale/exhale) indicates that the early theories of the Bianque School has been preserved.
