Notes on the Lichen Genus Hypotrachyna (Parmeliaceae) from South Korea

  • Hypotrachyna (Vainio) Hale is a somewhat rare lichen genus found on the Korean Peninsula. Since it was first recorded more than two decades ago, no detailed taxonomic or revisionary study of the genus has been conducted. Thus, the present study was conducted to carry out a detailed taxonomic and revisionary study of Hypotrachyna in South Korea. This study was based on specimens deposited in the Korean Lichen Research Institute (KoLRI). Detailed taxonomic studies and a literature review confirmed the presence of seven species of Hypotrachyna from South Korea, including one new record, Hypotrachyna nodakensis (Asahina) Hale. Descriptions of each species with their morphological, anatomical and chemical characters together with a key to all known Hypotrachyna species are presented.

  • A new restoration method of chest X -ray image (dual project filter) was proposed to improve SNR(signal to noise ratio) characteristics. In this method, a priori Information of system and anatomical structure and statistics of projected object are used in the design of filter. Dual projection filter varies its parameters, adapting to the local regions of chest(lung region, mediasternum, subdiaphragm) and the structure of chest (bone, tissue, blood vessel, bronchia). The performance of Dual Projection Filter was 0.1-0.2dB better than Dual Sensor Wiener Filter, which was used for initial estimate of Dual Porjection Filter.

  • This paper describes a neural network modelling of a vertebrate retina using a discrete-time and discrete-space approach based on neuro-anatomical data, and the computer simulations of the model which approximate the frog/amphibian negro-physiological data. It then compares them and describes how such a model can be beneficially used for confirming the hypothesis of a given neural system and further predict yet unknown experimental data.

  • Myelochroa (Asahina) Elix & Hale is a common foliose lichen genus found on the Korean Peninsula. Since it was first recorded nearly two decades ago, no detailed taxonomic or revisionary study of the genus has been conducted. Thus, the current study was conducted to carry out a detailed taxonomic and revisionary study of Myelochroa in South Korea. This study was based on specimens deposited in the Korean Lichen Research Institute (KoLRI). Detailed taxonomic studies and a literature review confirmed the presence of twelve species of Myelochroa from S. Korea, including one new record, Myelochroa xantholepis (Mont. & Bosch) Elix & Hale. Descriptions of each species with their morphological, anatomical and chemical characters together with a key to all known Myelochroa species are presented.

  • Usnea Adans. is a somewhat rare lichen in South Korea, and, in nearly two decades, no detailed taxonomic or revisionary study has been conducted. This study was based on the specimens deposited in the lichen herbarium at the Korean Lichen Research Institute, and the samples were identified using information obtained from recent literature. In this study, a total of eight species of Usnea, including one new record, Usnea hakonensis Asahina, are documented. Detailed descriptions of each species with their morphological, anatomical, and chemical characteristics are provided. A key to all known Usnea species in South Korea is also presented.

  • Two species of the lichen genus Dirinaria (Tuck.) Clem. are recognized in the South Korean lichen mycota, viz: D. applanata and D. picta. Descriptions of each species with their morphological, anatomical, and chemical characteristics together with molecular analysis and a key to known Dirinaria species are presented. D. picta is recorded from South Korea for the first time.

Clinical Outcomes of Minimum 12-Month Follow-Up of Anatomical Double Bundle ACL Reconstruction with a Longitudinally Split Tibialis Anterior Allograft (종분할된 전경골 동종건을 이용한 해부학적 전방 십자 인대 이중다발 재건술의 최소 12개월 임상 결과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical results after a anatomical double bundle ACL reconstruction using a longitudinally split tibialis anterior allograft. Materials and Methods: We evaluated 24 patients with a minimum follow-up of 12 months who had undergone anatomical double bundle ACL reconstructions. The grafts utilized in all cases were tibialis anterior allografts which were longitudinally split into two strands. A standard rehabilitation protocol was applied in all patients. The pre- and post-operative data including Lysholm scores, International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) scores, Lachman test, pivot shift test and the side-to-side differences of anterior laxity measured by KT-2000 arthrometer were analyzed by use of a statistical method Results: The mean side-to-side instrumented laxity measured by the KT-2000 arthrometer significantly improved to a mean of $1.04{\pm}0.80\;mm$ (P < 0.001). The Lysholm knee scores also improved from $58.34{\pm}15.32$ to $86.25{\pm}6.48$ after surgery (P < 0.001). The patients exhibited improved IKDC scores (A: 15 cases, B; 9 cases) at the final follow-up, compared to preoperative scores (B: 5, C: 10, D: 9). Conclusion: Our data demonstrated that clinical results of anatomical double bundle ACL reconstruction with a split tibialis anterior allograft are encouraging with excellent side-to side laxity, significantly improved Lysholm knee score, IKDC score, Lachman and pivot shift data.

Comparative anatomy of petiole in Forsythieae, Fontanesieae and Myxopyrum (Oleaceae) and its systematic implication (개나리족, 향선나무족, Myxopyrum속(물푸레나무과) 엽병의 해부학적 형질 및 분류학적 유용성)

  • A comparative study of the petiole anatomy in the tribes Forsythieae (Abeliophyllum, Forsythia) and Fontanesieae (Fontanesia), including one related genus Myxopyrum belonging to Myxopyreae, was carried out using light microscopy. The anatomical characteristics of the distal, medial and proximal parts of the petiole were studied to document any differences. We are described in detail based on their quantitative and qualitative characteristics. Three crystal types (acicular, druse, and prismatic crystals) were found in both Fontanesia and Myxopyrum within all of the studied taxa. Uni-cellular non-glandular trichomes were found in Abeliophyllum and three Forsythia taxa (F. europaea, F. giraldiana, and F. japonica). All features were compared and the vascular patterns of the petiole were distinguished in two types: Type 1A: Trace continuous arc - without crystals (Abeliophyllum, Forsythia), 1B: with crystals (Myxopyrum), Type 2: Trace invaginating at ends with crystals (Fontanesia). A detailed anatomical description of the studied taxa is provided, and its systematic importance is also briefly discussed. In conclusion, some petiole anatomical characteristics (e.g., the main vascular patterns, the presence/absence of crystals) can be useful for diagnostic features as well as partly for supporting the recently proposed molecular phylogeny.

Dendro-anatomical Study for Identification of Pine at Korea (국내산 소나무 식별을 위한 연륜해부학적 연구)

  • This study identified Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora) and exotic pines (Pinus resinosa, Pinus sylvestris) with a similar anatomical structure using a dendro-anatomical method that applied dendrochronology, tracheid length, and uniseriate ray cell size. Korean red pine samples were collected from 13 national parks, while exotic pine samples were secured from two wood importers. Tracheid length was measured by distinguishing earlywood from latewood, and uniseriate ray height and cell number were determined. As the exotic pine tree-ring chronology was consistent with the foreign standard tree-ring chronology and displayed high statistical significance, the country and region where the pine samples had been felled and the exact felling date were confirmed. According to the results, which compared tracheid length and uniseriate ray size, no difference was observed between the Korean red and Russian pines. However, the tracheid length of the Russian pines turned out to be slightly longer than the length of the Korean red pine. Additional research securing a larger number of exotic pines (P.resinosa, P.sylvestris) is required to yield more accurate results in the future.
