The dynamic performance of air foil bearings relies on a coupling between a thin air film and an elastic foil structure. A number of successful analytical techniques to predict dynamic performance have been developed. However, the evaluation of its dynamic characteristic is still not enough because of the mechanical complexity of the foil structure and strong nonlinear behavior of friction force. This work presents a nonlinear transient analysis method to predict dynamic performance of foil bearings. In this method, time dependent Reynolds equation is used to calculate pressure distribution and a finite element method is used to model the bump foil structure. The analysis is treated with a direct implicit integration technique that can handle nonlinear problems and the stick-slip algorithm is used to consider friction force. Using this method the response to the mass unbalance excitation is investigated for various design parameters and operating conditions. The results of analysis show that foil bearing is very effective on the restriction of vibration at the resonance frequency compared to the rigid surface bearings and the effectiveness depends on the operating conditions, static load and a amount of mass unbalance. In addition, there exist optimum values of friction coefficient, bump foil stiffness and number of circumferential slit with regards to minimizing dynamic response at the resonance frequency. These optimum values are system dependent.

In this paper, the concept of the infinite element is applied to the linear wave diffraction and radiation problems. The hydrodynamic pressure forces are assumed to be inertially dominated, and viscous effects are neglected. The near field region surrounding the solid body is modelled using the conventional finite elements, and the far field region is represented using the infinite elements .In order to represent the scattered wave potentials in the far field region more accurately, the infinite elements are developed using special shape functions derived from the asymptotic expressions for the analytical eigenseries solution of the scattered waves. The system matrices of the infinite elements are constructed by performing the integration in the infinite direction analytically to achieve computational efficiency. Numerical analyses are carried out for vertical axisymmetric bodies to validate the infinite elements developed here. Comparisons with the results by other available numerical solution methods show that the present method using the infinite elements gives fairly good results. Numerical experiments are per-formed to determine the suitable location of the infinite elements and the appropriate size of the finite elements which directly affect accuracy and efficiency of the solution.

We have addressed two important issues of immunosensing biochips, including the construction of antibody functionalized suface for efficient affinity reactions and the development of a signal registration strategy that converts biospecific reactions into highly quantifiable electrochemical and/or optical signals. The developed immunoassay reaction is an integrated version of enzyme-mediated immunoprecipitaion reaction, which is widely used in immunohistochemistry, and electrochemical signaling reaction. For the evaluation of analytical performance of fabricated immunosensing biochips, signaling for mouse IgG in antiserum was conducted. Applications of the developed strategy have been found for the evaluation of histology chemicals and for the signal amplification for array-type biochip analysis.

In this paper an enhanced quadratic finite element for static and dynamic analysis of plate structures is presented. The performance of a proposed plate element is improved by the coupled use of non conforming displacement modes, the selective integration scheme, and the assumed shear strain fields. An efficient direct modification method is also applied to this element to solve the problem such as failure of the patch test due to the adoption of non conforming modes. The proposed quadratic finite element does not show any spurious mechanism and does not produce shear locking phenomena even with distorted meshes. It is shown that the results obtained by this element converged to analytical solutions very rapidly tough numerical tests for standard benchmark problems. It is also noted that this element is applicable to transient dynamic analysis of Mindlin plates.
Post-construction subgrade settlement especially differential settlement, has become a key issue in construction and operation of non-ballasted track on high-speed railway soil subgrade, which may also affect the dynamic performance of passing trains. To estimate the effect of differential subgrade settlement on the mechanical behaviors of the vehicle-slab track system, a detailed model considering nonlinear subgrade support and initial track state due to track self-weight is developed. Accordingly, analysis aiming at a typical high-speed vehicle coupled with a deteriorated slab track owing to differential subgrade settlement is carried out, in terms of two aspects: (i) determination of an initial mapping relationship between subgrade settlement and track deflections as well as contact state between track and subgrade based on a semi-analytical method; (ii) simulation of dynamic performance of the coupled system by employing a time integration approach. The investigation indicates that subgrade settlement results in additional track irregularity, and locally, the contact between the concrete track and the soil subgrade is prone to failure. Moreover, wheel-rail interaction is significantly exacerbated by the track degradation and abnormal responses occur as a result of the unsupported areas. Distributions of interlaminar contact forces in track system vary dramatically due to the combined effect of track deterioration and dynamic load. These may not only intensify the dynamic responses of the coupled system, but also have impacts on the long-term behavior of the track components.
We present an algorithm for surface reconstruction from the second-derivative data for free-form aspherics, which uses a subaperture scanning system that measures the local surface profile and determines the three second-derivative values at those local sampling points across the free-form surface. The three second-derivative data were integrated to get a map of x- and y-slopes, which went through a second Southwell integration step to reconstruct the surface profile. A synthetic free-form surface 200 mm in diameter was simulated. The simulation results show that the reconstruction error is 19 nm RMS residual difference. Finally, the sensitivity to noise is diagnosed for second-derivative Gaussian random noise with a signal to noise ratio (SNR) of 16, the simulation results proving that the suggested method is robust to noise.

Using the bond-based peridynamics and the parallel computation with binary decomposition, an adjoint shape design sensitivity analysis(DSA) method is developed for the dynamic crack propagation problems. The peridynamics includes the successive branching of cracks and employs the explicit scheme of time integration. The adjoint variable method is generally not suitable for path-dependent problems but employed since the path of response analysis is readily available. The accuracy of analytical design sensitivity is verified by comparing it with the finite difference one. The finite difference method is susceptible to the amount of design perturbations and could result in inaccurate design sensitivity for highly nonlinear peridynamics problems with respect to the design. It turns out that $C^1$-continuous volume fraction is necessary for the accurate evaluation of shape design sensitivity in peridynamic discretization.
The usage of Building Information Modelling (BIM) in building projects has enabled improvement in project planning, implementation and collaboration process amongst various stakeholders within architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry. However, variations exist in the current practices of BIM implementation and coordination process in the industry. These variations result in inconsistent degree of BIM use across the construction industry. This inconsistency gives rise to several managerial and technological challenges such as data interoperability issues and purposeful integration and exchange of information within the BIM components. In order to tackle the issue, it is essential to analyse the different BIM approaches employed by the industry practitioners. BIM guidelines serve as a critical link between the BIM model, and its subsequent execution. They therefore provide the best reflection of BIM application and processes. This research paper aims to address the variations existing in BIM practices across the construction industry. It includes an extensive study of 21 existing, publicly available BIM-based guidelines in order to establish an understanding of the present state of practice and deduce issues and concerns related to them. All guidelines analysed in this paper are first categorised based on authorship and the release date for efficient comparison. The points of similarity and difference between them are thereby realized and outlined. In addition, the transition of project implementation process from traditional methods to BIM technology is also explained. The existence of inconsistencies in the BIM guidelines reviewed in this paper reflects the need of a BIM 'Code Compliance Check'. The Code Compliance Check will serve as a regulatory project guideline that will further improve the potential of BIM by incorporating a consistent BIM modelling methodology for the entire construction industry.
Recent technological advances provide the opportunity to use large amounts of multimedia data from a multitude of sensors with different modalities (e.g., video, text) for the detection and characterization of criminal activity. Their integration can compensate for sensor and modality deficiencies by using data from other available sensors and modalities. However, building such an integrated system at the scale of neighborhood and cities is challenging due to the large amount of data to be considered and the need to ensure a short response time to potential criminal activity. In this paper, we present a system that enables multi-modal data collection at scale and automates the detection of events of interest for the surveillance and reconnaissance of criminal activity. The proposed system showcases novel analytical tools that fuse multimedia data streams to automatically detect and identify specific criminal events and activities. More specifically, the system detects and analyzes series of incidents (an incident is an occurrence or artifact relevant to a criminal activity extracted from a single media stream) in the spatiotemporal domain to extract events (actual instances of criminal events) while cross-referencing multimodal media streams and incidents in time and space to provide a comprehensive view to a human operator while avoiding information overload. We present several case studies that demonstrate how the proposed system can provide law enforcement personnel with forensic and real time tools to identify and track potential criminal activity.
BACKGROUND: To identify the sources of inaccuracy in LC/MS/MS methods used in the routine quantitation of small molecules are described and discussed. METHODS AND RESULTS: Various UPLC coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometer and time of flight (TOF) were used to identify the potential sources of inaccuracy and inducing the pitfalls of qualification and quntitation during the veterinary drug residue analysis. Some of stable isotope labelled veterinary drugs, which were used as internal standards, presented "cross-talk", regardless of manufactures of mass spectrometer and types of spectrometer. Group of sulfonamides also presented inaccuracy qualification and quantitation due to the multi-residue analytical method with the same fragment ions at the close retention times. CONCLUSION: The phenomena of "cross-talk" occurring between subsequently monitored transition from stable isotope labelled and isotope non-labelled authentic chemical were identified. To prevent errors and achieve more accurate data during the analysis of small molecules by LC/MS/MS SRM method, Followings should be taken care of and kept checking; purity and concentration of stable isotope as an internal standard, prevention of carry-over during the separation in column, minimizing the ion suppression by matrix effect, identification of retention time, precursor ion and product ion, and full knowledge of data processing including smoothing and peak integration.
