  • Cooperative beamforming has previously been proven to be an efficient way to improve the cooperative diversity. This method generally requires all relay nodes to participate in beamforming, which can be seen as "all participate" cooperative beamforming. However, not all relay nodes have constructive impacts on the end-to-end bit error rate (BER) performance. Based on this observation, we propose a new cooperative scheme which only selects those "appropriate" relay nodes to perform cooperative beamforming. Such relay nodes can be simply determined with mean channel gains. Therefore, the selection complexity is significantly reduced as global instantaneous channel state information is not required. This scheme guarantees that energy is only allocated to the "appropriate" relay nodes, and hence provides superior diversity. We also prove that power allocation among source and selected relay nodes is a convex problem, and can be resolved with lower computational complexity. Simulation results demonstrate that our scheme achieves an essential improvement in terms of BER performance for both optimal and limited feedback scenarios, as well as high energy-efficiency for the energy-constrained networks.

  • In this paper, we consider an amplify-and-forward (AF) full duplex (FD) massive-antenna relay (or base station) aiding communication between K single-antenna source and destination pairs whose transmissions are overheard by one single-antenna eavesdropper. Maximum ratio combining (MRC) and maximum ratio transmission (MRT) processing is employed at the relay. The secrecy performance of the system is then derived with both relay and destination being equipped with low resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). The results show the detrimental effect of the eavesdropper's presence on the sum rate of the system.

  • In this paper, we proposed a simple power allocation scheme to maximize network lifetime. To maximize network lifetime, it is important to allocate power fairly among nodes in a network as well as to minimize total transmitted power. In the proposed scheme, the allocated power is proportional to the residual power and also satisfies the required SNR at destination node. In this paper, we calculate power allocation in "amplify and forward" (AF) model. We evaluated the proposed power allocation scheme using extensive simulation and simulation results show that proposed power allocation obtains much longer network lifetime than the equal power allocation.

  • In this paper, we investigate an energy-efficient resource allocation problem in a two-way relay (TWR) network consisting of multiple user pairs and an amplify-and-forward (AF) relay. As the users and relay have individual energy efficiencies (EE), we formulate a multi-objective optimization problem (MOOP). A single-objective optimization problem (SOOP) of the MOOP is introduced using a weighted-sum method, which achieves a single Pareto optimal point of the MOOP. To derive the algorithm for the SOOP, we propose a more tractable equivalent problem using the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions of the SOOP, which guarantees convergence at the local optimal points. The proposed equivalent problem can be efficiently solved by the proposed iterative algorithm. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in achieving the optimal EE in multi-user AF TWR networks.

  • This paper investigates the performance of a hybrid single input multiple output radio frequency/free-space optics (SIMO-RF/FSO) communication system. Each SIMO-RF link is modeled as an independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) Rayleigh distribution, while the FSO link follows a generalized $M{\acute{a}}laga$ (M) distribution. Considering the fixed gain amplify-and-forward (AF) relay and misalignment errors, novel expressions for the outage probability (OP), average bit error rate (ABER) and average capacity are derived. Numerical results show that atmospheric turbulence and misalignment errors can seriously impair the system performance, and the hybrid RF/FSO communication system using SIMO-RF links can greatly improve system performance. We also analyze system performance under different types of modulation schemes. Numerical results are verified by Monte Carlo simulations.

  • This paper has researched designing methods and characteristics of the indoor two-way CATV amplifier to amplify the weak signals and to separate the signals in the forward and the reverse channels in the cable system. It consists of diplex filters, equalizers, attenuators and amplifier modules. With the experimental results for frequency response, gain and slope controls, noise figures, return losses, distortion characteristics, we concluded that the operating capabilities of the amplifier developed in this research satisfy the design conditions.

  • Cooperative diversity is a transmission technique, in which multiple terminals pool their resources to form a virtual antenna array that realizes spatial diversity gain in a distributed fashion. In this paper, we propose a new type of cooperative transmission protocol with a full rate and show that its BER performance is improved by 8dB over the existing protocol under the AF (amplify-and-forward) mode of relaying.

  • A hybrid free-space-optical/radio-frequency (FSO/RF) communication system is considered, with the help of amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying. We consider various weather conditions to investigate their effects on the system's performance. We begin by obtaining the cumulative distribution function and probability density function of the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio for the AF dual-hop FSO communication system with RF backup link. Then, these results are used to derive closed-form expressions for the outage probability, average bit-error rate, and average ergodic capacity. The results show that the considered system efficiently employs the complementary nature of FSO and RF links, resulting in impressive performance improvements compared to non-hybrid systems.

  • The flow direction in a glass tube is measured by using a forward scattering dual beam laser Doppler velo$.$ cimeter with an acousto-optic modulator. We can determine the flow direction by measuring the shifted Doppler frequency which is dependent on the order of modulation of the laser beam and the fluid flow direction.
