  • In this experiment, photochemical reaction has been applied to destroy TCE in water phase. The main target of this work is to investigate the technical feasibility of large scale of solar detoxification reactor for water treatment. The results have revealed that solar detoxification utilizing photon energy from the sun is the most attractive process to decompose organic toxins in water phase at room temperature. The detailed results from this work are as follows; (1) The highest conversion ratio of TCE was obtained by using $TiO_2$, annatase as a photocatalyst among $TiO_2$ anatase, $TiO_2$ rutile and $V_2O_5$ under the same experimental condition. The anatase crystal structure was confirmed with XRD analysis, and its surface area was 7.748 $m^2/g$ from the BET-$N_2$ measurement (2) 0.1 wt% of $TiO_2$ anatase has been adopted as optimal quantity for batch slurry reactor at this experimental conditions. (3) The effect of hydrogen peroxide on the conversion of TCE was investigated. Its optimal quantity was 0.06 vol. % under this experimental conditions. (4) The effect of oxygen on the conversion of TCE also was studied by controlling the head space in photoreactor. Results indicated that sufficient amount of oxygen should be supplied to accomplish the highest conversion rate of TCE in water phase.

  • There are difficulties in removing wood tar wastewater coming from the power plants that use wood-based fuels due to its intermittent occurrences and severe changes in the amount and concentration. This study investigated the treatment characteristics through physicochemical treatment, an improved method from the existing ones using bag filters and activated carbons to treat wood tar wastewater. In the case of chemical properties of wood tar wastewater, the content of phenols was found to be more than two times higher than that of guaiacols and carbohydrates. Installation is done to ensure that NaOH and PAC are injected automatically according to the change of pH, and then pH, turbidity and SS of the final treated water were examined. The results were 5.9, 12.6 NTU and 15.1 mg/L respectively, which confirmed the possibility of the treated water as circulation water of power plants. In the physical treatment process using a conventional bag filter, removal efficiency of chemicals was about 20%, but the treatment efficiency was improved to show chemical removal efficiency of about 80% through flocculation and sedimentation.

  • A concentration meter is widely used at purification plants, sewage treatment plants and waste water treatment plants to sort and transfer high concentration sludge and to control the amount of chemical dosage. When the strange substance is contained in the sludge, however, the attenuation of ultrasonic wave could be increased or not be transmitted to the receiver. At that case, the value of concentration meter is higher than the actual density value or vibrated up and down. It has also been difficult to automate the residuals treatment process according to the problems as sludge attachment or damage of a sensor. Multi-beam ultrasonic concentration meter has been developed to solve these problems, but the failure of the ultrasonic beam of a specific concentration measurement value degrade the performance of the entire system. This paper proposes the method to improve the accuracy of sludge concentration rate by choosing reliable sensor values and learning them by proposed algorithm. The prediction algorithm is chosen as neuro-fuzzy model, which is tested by the various experiments.

  • The feasibility of applications of the char obtained from a gasification process of municipal-waste refuse derived fuel (RDF) as an auxiliary fuel was evaluated by combustion experiments. The higher heating value of the RDF char was 3000~4000 kcal/kg and its chlorine content was below the standard requirement demonstrating its potential as an auxiliary fuel. In the combustion exhaust gas, the maximum $NO_x$ and $SO_2$ concentrations were 240 ppm and 223 ppm, respectively. If an aftertreatment is applied, it is possible to control their concentrations low enough to meet the air pollutant emission standard. The HCl concentration was relatively high indicating that a care should be taken for HCl emission from the combustion of RDF. Based on the temperature distribution within the reactor, the concentration change of $O_2$ and $CO_2$, and the amount and the loss on ignition of solid residue, it was inferred that the combustion reaction was the most reliable when the excess air ratio of 1.3 was used.

  • Pectin, hesperidin and naringin were extracted from hot air-dried peel ($60^{\circ}C$, 1 hr and air velocity 160 fpm) of citrus produced in Korea in order to see the amount of each component contained in the peel. Pectin was extracted by three different methods and the quality and contents of the pectins were determined respectively. 1. The pectin yield by the total pectic substance method was the highest (26.0% for unshiu (U) and 28.5% for natsudaidai (N) expectedly and the soluble pectic substance method the least (13.5%(U) and 15.6% (N)) The yield by method III (extraction by water at pH 1.5 followed by isopropanol precipitation) was intermediate (18.1% (U) and 20.8%(N)). Anhydrouronic acid (AUA) content was the highest (92.0% (U) and 90.3%(N)) in those by method III. The AUA contents of the other pectins were 80.0% for soluble pectin (for both U and N), 71.6% for the commercial pectin (Sunkist Groups Inc., U.S.A.), 58.0%(N) and 63.4%(U) for total pectic substance. 2. The methoxyl content of total pectic substance was the lowest (4.81%(U) and 4.88%(N)). However, there was no significant difference in methoxyl content among the rest which were found to have low levels(5.27-7.20%). 3. The pectin by method III gave the highest jelly strength. The commercial pectin, soluble pectice substance and total pectic substance were next in order. 4. The hesperidin content of unshiu was 5.07% (dry basis) and the naringin content of natsudaidai 3.03% (dry basis).

  • This study was carried to investigate suitable additive materials and its mixing ratio in pot cultivation of Pleurotus ostreatus. The main substrate for Pleurotus ostreatus cultivation was poplar sawdust plus with waste cotton at the ratio 1 : 1 (v/v). Using pot diameter and substrate weight were 12 cm and 1 kg/pot, respectively. The higher amount of additives resulted in higher total nitrogen content and C/N ratio of substrate also decreased according to increasing mixing ratio of additives. The supplementation of cotton seed flour more than 20% caused the failure of devolopment of fruit body. The hardness of substrate in supplementation of rice bran after mycelial growth was highest any other additives. The ratio of harvest was highest in supplementation of beet pulp, $75{\sim}85%$. The fruit bodies yield and biological efficiency of supplemented with 20% beet pulp were highest during second flush.

  • Recently, the depletion of fossil fuels, global warming and environmental pollution have emerged as a worldwide problem, and studies of new renewable energy sources have been progressed. Among the many renewable energy sources, the use of bio fuel has the potential to displace fossil fuels due to low price, easy to handle, and the abundant sources. Pyrolysis oil (PO) derived from waste wood and sawdust is considered an alternative fuel for use in diesel engines. On the other hand, PO is limited to diesel engines because of its low cetane number, high viscosity, high acidity, and low energy density. Therefore, to improve its poor properties, PO was mixed with alcohol fuels, such as ethanol. Early mixing with ethanol has the benefit of improving the storage and handling properties of the PO. Furthermore, a PO-ethanol blended fuel was injected separately, which can be fired through pilot-injected diesel in a dual-injection diesel engine. The experimental results showed that the substitution of diesel with blended fuel increases the amount of HC and CO, but reduces the NOx and PM significantly.

  • Steel-making slag was investigated as reactive material for removal of cadmium in coastal area. Batch experiments of the sorption isotherm experiment and kinetic sorption experiment were performed. Result of sorption isotherm was more adequately described by Langmuir model than Freundlich model and theoretical maximum capacity (${\beta}$) of cadmium onto steel-making slag was found. Results of kinetic sorption experiments were evaluated by pseudo second order model to investigate sorption characteristics of cadmium onto steel-making slag. Results showed that the equilibrium sorption amount of cadmium (q$q_e$) increased and the rate constant ($k_2$) and initial sorption rate (h) decreased as the initial cadmium concentration increased. The $q_e$ with simulated sea water was similar to that with deionized water and $k_2$ and h with simulated sea water was lower than those with deionized water. Results of kinetic experiments could be used to predict the result from sorption isotherm, since equilibrium sorption amounts calculated by pseudo second order model generally agreed with those measured from sorption isotherm. The reaction time for the target removal rate could be calculated by the pseudo second order model using kinetic sorption tests results.

  • A microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a device that can be obtained electricity from a variety of organic through the catalytic reaction of the microorganism. The MFC can be applied to various fields, and research is required to promote the performance of the microbial fuel cell for commercialization. The lower performance of an MFC is due to oxygen reduction at the cathode and the longer time of microbial degradation at anode. The MFC amount of power is sufficient but, in consideration of many factors, as a renewable energy, now commonly power density as compared to Nafion117 it is an ion exchange membrane used is PP (Poly Propylene) from 80 to about 11 fold higher, while reducing the cost to process wastewater is changed to a microporous non-woven fabric of a low cost, it may be energy-friendly environment to generate electricity. All waste, in that it can act as a bait for microorganisms, sustainability of the microbial fuel cell is limitless. The latest research on the optimization and performance of the operating parameters are surveyed and through the SSaM-GG(Smart, Shared, and Mutual- Green Growth) or GG-SSaM(Green Growth - Smart, Shared, and Mutual) as the concept of sustainable development in MFC, the middle indices are developed in this study.

  • Nonliving Absidia coerulea and Thraustochitrium sp. were used as biosorbents to remove lead and cobalt that are one of representative pollutant in wastewater and radioactive liquid waste. The optimum pH range for maximum lead and cobalt removal was increased 6.5~11.4 and 8.6~12.0 for Absidia coerulea and 4.2~10.5 and 8.9~11.6 for Thraustochitrium sp. to compared to biosorbent-free control, pH of 8.4~11.2 and 10.5~11.5, respectively. With 1 g biosorbent/L at initial solution pH 5.0. Absidia coerulea and Thraustochitrium sp. took up lead from aqueous solutions to the extent of 104 and 125 mg/g biomass, respectively, whereas Absidia coerulea and Thraustochitrium sp. at initial pH 6.0 took up only 2 and 20 mg/g biomass of cobalt, respectively. For initial 500 mg Pb/L at initial pH 5.0. optimum amount of biosorbent for maximum lead uptake was 0.2 g/L for Absidia coerulea and Thraustochitrium sp., whereas optimum 3.0 g biosorbent/L was needed for initial 200 mg Co/L at initial pH 6.0. Absidia coerulea and Thraustochitrium sp. had higher adsorption capacity for lead than that of cobalt.
