  • In this paper, the thermodynamic performance of OTEC cycle was examined. Computer simulation programs were developed for simple Rankine cycle, regenerative Rankine cycle, Kalina cycle, open cycle and hybrid cycle. For the simple Rankine cycle, the results show that newly developed fluids such as R410A and R32 that do not cause stratospheric ozone layer depletion perform as well as R22 and ammonia. Also, simple Rankine cycle OTEC power plant can practically generate electricity when the difference in warm and cold sea water inlet temperatures are greater than $14^{\circ}C$. The regenerative Rankine cycle showed a 1.5 to 2% increase in energy efficiency compared to the simple Rankine cycle while the Kalina cycle employing ammonia/water mixture showed a 2-to-3% increase in energy efficiency, and the overall cycle efficiencies of hybrid cycle and open cycle were 3.35% and 4.86%, respectively.

  • The experimental transportation of Rhynchocypris steindachneri was carried out to study the effects of lidocaine-hydrochloride on water parameters. The dissolved oxygen, ventilation rate, ammonia nitrogen, and pH of control group, sham control group, and lidocaine-hydrochloride treated groups of 2,5 ppm, 5 ppm, 10 ppm and 20 ppm at time of 30 min, 60 min, 90 min, 120 min, 240 min and 360 min after elapsed from treatment were tested. During the experiment time it was found that lidocaine-hydrochloride treated groups were most effective, followed by sham control and control, in decreasing the oxygen consumption and the excretion of ammonia by the fish. There were lidocaine-hydrochloride dose-related decrease in oxygen consumption and the excretion of ammonia. Decreasing in pH value of lidocaine-hydrochloride groups and sham control group was much more higher than that of control group. These results reveal lidocaine-hydrochloride is effective as sedative for transportation mixture in R. steindachneri.

  • Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with ammonia was carried out over the physical mixture of $MnO_2$ and K or Cu-loaded activated carbons (AC) at low temperature. Introduction of oxygen affected positively the reduction of NO. Metal-impregnated AC showed significantly enhanced catalytic activity. Without water, the mixed catalyst of $MnO_2$ and K-loaded AC exhibited the best activity in the reduction of NO at $120^{\circ}C$. On the contrary, the activities of all the catalysts were significantly diminished in the presence of water. The mixed catalyst of $MnO_2$ and Cu-loaded AC treated with nitric acid and heat (1 : 1, w/w) exhibited the better activity for the reduction of NO than each single catalyst in presence of water.

  • Four rumen fistulated Murrah buffaloes were used to study the effect of four diets differing in roughage to concentrate ratio on rumen biochemical changes, microbial enzyme profile and in sacco degradability of feed in a $4{\times}4$ Latin Square design. The animals were fed four diets consisting of 80:20, 70:30, 60:40 and 50:50 ratios of wheat straw and concentrate mixtures, respectively. Wheat straw and concentrate mixture were mixed with water (0.6 l/kg feed) and complete feed mixture was offered to the animals at 8:00 h and 16:00 h in two equal parts. The variation in pH of rumen liquor (difference of maximum and minimum during 0-8 h post feeding) increased with increasing level of concentrate mixture in the diet. There was no effect of diet composition on volatile fatty acids, total nitrogen and trichloro-acetic acid precipitable nitrogen in the rumen liquor, but ammonia nitrogen increased with increasing level of concentrate mixture in the ration. Major portions of all fibre degrading enzymes were present in the particulate material (PM) of the rumen contents, but protease was absent in PM fraction. The activities of micro-crystalline cellulase, acetyl esterase and protease increased with increase in the level of concentrate mixture, but the activities of other enzymes (carboxymethylcellulase, filter paper degrading activity, xylanase, $\beta$-glucosidase and $\beta$-xylosidase) were not affected. The in sacco degradability and effective degradability of feeds increased with increasing level of concentrate mixture in the ration.

  • Ammonium ion (${NH_4}^+$) was suggested as the origin of interstellar $6.85\;{\mu}m$ band. Early study, in which organic molecule and water ice film mixtures were photolyzed so that organic acids could be produced, explained the generation of ${NH_4}^+$ from the reaction of photogenerated organic acid and ammonia ($NH_3$). However, the observed abundance of organic acids or their counter-anions are not so high in interstellar ice and not enough to protonate $NH_3$ into ${NH_4}^+$ in the observed level. Because of the shortage in photogenerated organic acids, the candidate of acid which protonates $NH_3$ should be modified. Here, we prepare $NH_3/H_2O$ binary mixtures and photolyze them with vacuum ultraviolet (VUV, peak at 10.6 and 10.0 eV). We find the ammonium ion (${NH_4}^+$) from photolyzed mixture by using low energy sputtering (LES) and reflection absorption IR spectroscopy (RAIRS). As a hydronium ($H_3O^+$) can be produced by UV irradiation and protonate bases, ${NH_4}^+$ may be formed from the reaction of photogenerated $H_3O^+$ and $NH_3$. We show the generation of ${NH_4}^+$ without any kind of organic molecules or acids, and it may explain the relatively high abundance of ${NH_4}^+$ compared to the counter-anions or organic acids in interstellar ice.

  • Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the physicochemical properties and changes in moisture concentrations of bedding materials under the conditions of rearing Korean Hanwoo cows. Methods: Two experiments were conducted to investigate the physicochemical characteristics (Exp. I) and usefulness as beddings for rearing cattle (Exp. II) by the type of beddings such as sawdust (SD), wood shavings (WS) and sawdust+wood shavings (S+W; 1:1 in volume), and the species of pine trees from different countries of origins (China, Pinus armandii, AR; Vietnam, Pinus kesiya, KE; USA, Pinus rigida, RI). Results: In Exp. I, SD-AR showed the largest proportion (78.3%) of fine particles (250 ㎛+below 250 ㎛) and the highest bulk density (208 kg/㎥) among treatments (p<0.05). The water absorption capacity at 24 h of both S+W-RI (713%) and -KE (701%) was the highest among treatments (p<0.05) and higher than those of SD or WS alone within each species of pine tree (p<0.05). Moisture evaporation rates (%) at 12 h were ranged from 52.3 to 60.8 for SD, 69.9 to 74.4 for WS, and 72.3 to 73.5 for S+W. Total amounts (mg/㎡) of ammonia emissions were the lowest (p<0.05) in KE species among the pine species within each type of bedding material, having higher ability of ammonia absorption. In Exp II, KE species in both side A and B had lower moisture concentrations (%) than other species. Regardless of types of beddings except SD-AR, moisture concentrations of beddings within a pen were higher (p<0.01) at side A than B. Conclusion: The KE species has better physical characteristics than other beddings and more useful for rearing Hanwoo cattle than other beddings, probably caused by the differences in the method and degree of wood processing rather than the species.

  • Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of waste cooking oil (WCO) addition on ammonia (NH3) emissions during the composting of dairy cattle manure under two aeration conditions. Methods: The composting tests were conducted using the laboratory-scale composting apparatuses (14 L of inner volume). Three composting treatments (Control, WCO1.5, and WCO3, with WCO added at 0 wt%, 1.5 wt%, and 3 wt% of manure, respectively) were performed in two composting tests: aeration rate during composting was changed from 0.55 to 0.45 L/min in Test 1, and fixed at 0.3 L/min in Test 2, respectively. The NH3 emitted and nitrogen losses during the composting were analyzed, and the effect of the addition of WCO on NH3 emissions were evaluated. Results: Both tests indicated that the composting mixture temperature increased while the weight and water content decreased with increasing WCO content of the composting mixtures. On the other hand, the NH3 emissions and nitrogen loss trends observed during composting in Tests 1 and 2 were different from each other. In Test 1, NH3 emissions and nitrogen losses during composting increased with increasing WCO contents of the composting samples. Conversely, in Test 2, they decreased as the WCO contents of the samples increased. Conclusion: The WCO addition showed different effect on NH3 emissions during composting under two aeration conditions: the increase in WCO addition ratio increased the emissions under the higher aeration rate in Test 1, and it decreased the emissions under the lower aeration rate in Test 2. To obtain reduction of NH3 emissions by adding WCO with the addition ratio ≤3 wt% of the manure, aeration should be considered.

  • A study was conducted to examine the effect of application of Diazinon at different rates in submerged soil under the application of different N fertilizers; urea, ammonium sulfate and organic fertilizer(fermented chicken dung-sawdust mixture). The levels of Diazinon application were equivalent to zero, 350 mg a. i./ha, 700 mg a. i./ha and 1050 mg a. i./ha. To 100 gr of air-dry soil, 10 mg of N, $P_2O_5$ and $K_2O$ and different levels of Diazinon were mixed thoroughly and the soil was submerged in 100 ml of distilled water. The submerged soil was incubated at $30^{\circ}C$ for 50 days. Volatilied ammonia was measured at every 10 days. The amount of ammonia volatilization was greatest in urea treated soil, followed by organic fertilizer and it was the least in ammonium sulfate treated soil. The application of Diazinon at 700 mg a. i./ha increased the volatilization of ammonia greatly in the urea treated soil. Under other fertilizers, the effect of Diazinon application was not remarkable. The increase in the soil pH during the incubation period under different fertilizer treatments tended to increase ammonia volatilization.

  • The mathematical model for the heat exchangers of absorber and desorber is made in the elementary control volume method and the thermodynamic properties of working fluid. water/ammonia mixture. are calculated by some fundamental subroutines in RefProp 7.0 and flash subroutines made by authors The simulation results show that two-stage cycle has higher COP than single stage if temperature lift is high: the performance of single stage compression cycle can be improved by increase of absorber pressure. but the performance of two-stage compression cycle can not be improved in this way : the compressor discharging temperature of two-stage compression is much lower than that of single stage cycle. which is very important to the safety operation of CA heat pump. Major parameter comparison between the cycles at their optimal configurations is also given.

  • A simple and convenient method of detecting N, N-dimethy laniline (D.M.A.) residues in ampicillin trihydrate (A.T.) was established. D.M.A. was extracted by chloroform from the chloroform presaturated N/10-ammonia water solution of A.T. and chromatographed on silica gel G thin layer. Blue spot appeared in 15minutes after spray of 2, 6-dichloroquinonechlorimide solution was compared with the blue spot of reference concomitantly processed. The developing solvent was prepared by mixing equal volume of cyclohexane and chloroform. To quantitate the amount of D.M.A. in A.T., T.L.C. was performed with the Eastmann Chromatogram sheet, then color density was measured by Cosmo Superclick densitometer. The developing solvent at this time was cyclohexane-chlorofonn (3+7) mixture. The peak areas obtained with the amount of D.M.A ranging from 0.05 to 2.0 .mu.g were linear to color density. Better sensitive results would be available with the densitometer equipped with monochromator.
