This study was conducted to develop a wastewater treatment system to remove organic matter, nitrate nitrogen, and phosphate ion in synthetic wastewater. COD was removed almost 100% by the oxidation reaction of HClO and nitrate nitrogen was reduced to ammonia by electrolysis treatment, but ammonia was reoxidized into nitrate nitrogen by HClO treatment. Ammonia was removed almost 100% by heating evaporation and no ammonia was reoxidized into nitrate by HClO treatment. Phosphate ion could be removed by precipitation treatment by forming metal complex according to pH. Through electrolysis treatment and HClO treatment, removal efficiencies of COD 99.5%, nitrogen 97.3% and phosphorus 91.5% were obtained.
The diversity and abundance of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in activated sludge were compared using PCR-DGGE and real-time PCR assays. Activated sludge samples were collected from five different types of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) mainly treating textile, paper, food, and livestock wastewater or domestic sewage. The composition of total bacteria determined by PCR-DGGE was highly diverse between the samples, whereas the community of AOB was similar across all the investigated activated sludge. Total bacterial numbers and AOB numbers in the aerated mixed liquor were in the range of $1.8{\times}10^{10}$ to $3.8{\times}10^{12}$ and $1.7{\times}10^6$ to $2.7{\times}10^{10}$ copies/l, respectively. Activated sludge from livestock, textile, and sewage treating WWTPs contained relatively high amoA gene copies (more than $10^5$ copies/l), whereas activated sludge from food and paper WWTPs revealed a low number of the amoA gene (less than $10^3$ copies/l). The value of the amoA gene copy effectively showed the difference in composition of bacteria in different activated sludge samples and this was better than the measurement with the AOB 16S rRNA or total 16S rRNA gene. These results suggest that the quantification of the amoA gene can help monitor AOB and ammonia oxidation in WWTPs.

The understanding of the relationship between ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) communities in activated sludge and the operational treatment parameters supports the control of the treatment of ammonia-rich wastewater. The modifications of treatment parameters by alteration of the number and length of aerobic and anaerobic stages in the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) working cycle may influence the efficiency of ammonium oxidation and induce changes in the AOB community. Therefore, in the research, the impact of an SBR cycle mode with alternating aeration/mixing conditions (7 h/1 h vs. 4 h/5.5 h) and volumetric exchange rate (n) on AOB abundance and diversity in activated sludge during the treatment of anaerobic sludge digester supernatant at limited oxygen concentration in the aeration stage (0.7 mg $O_2/l$) was assessed. AOB diversity expressed by the Shannon-Wiener index (H') was determined by the cycle mode. At aeration/mixing stage lengths of 7 h/1 h, H' averaged $2.48{\pm}0.17$, while at 4 h/5.5 h it was $2.35{\pm}0.16$. At the given mode, AOB diversity decreased with increasing n. The cycle mode did not affect AOB abundance; however, a higher AOB abundance in activated sludge was promoted by decreasing the volumetric exchange rate. The sequences clustering with Nitrosospira sp. NpAV revealed the uniqueness of the AOB community and the simultaneously lower ability of adaptation of Nitrosospira sp. to the operational parameters applied in comparison with Nitrosomonas sp.
In this study, selective catalytic oxidation (SCO) of $NH_3$ using $Ce/TiO_2$ catalyst was examined to control the slipped NH3 from various pollutants. It was found that the catalytic activity increased with increasing the Ce loadings till reaching 10 wt% Ce loading. However, when Ce loaded over 10 wt%, the activity of catalysts rather decreased than that of catalysts, below 10 wt% Ce. Therefore, the composition of $Ce/TiO_2$ catalyst optimized in this study can be applied to industrial fields.

In this study, to investigate the feasibility of malodorous substance and organic matter removal by digest sludge in sewage treatment plants, ammonia, methyl mercaptan(MMC), and hydrogen sulfide($H_2S$) in a reactor submerged with BIO-CLOD(BIO-CLOD) and a reactor not submerged with BIO-CLOD(Non BIO-CLOD) were measured at 24 hours, 48 hours, and 72 hours after the submergence of BIO-CLOD. Whereas the reactor in which BIO-CLOD was submerged showed an ammonia removal rate of 48% and high $H_2S$ and MMC removal rates exceeding 98% in 24 hours, the reactor in which BIO-CLOD was not submerged showed an ammonia removal rate of 45%, an $H_2S$ removal rate of 71%, and an MMC removal rate of 84% in 24 hours indicating the possibility of removal of malodor using BIO-CLOD. A nitrification was shown in which ammonia concentrations decreased over time while nitrate nitrogen concentrations increased and sulfur based malodor components were oxidation decomposed indicating that BIO-CLOD had effects to increase sulfate concentrations in the solution and that sulfate concentration increases and atmospheric $H_2S$ removal rates were correlated with each other. With regard to decreases in organic matter in reactor effluents, BIO-CLOD did not affect in a short period of time and when reactors were operated with HRT 12 hours and HRT 24 hours, HRT 12 hours was considered desirable in terms of economy.
Background: Red-skin root disease has seriously decreased the quality and production of Panax ginseng (ginseng). Methods: To explore the disease's origin, comparative analysis was performed in different parts of the plant, particularly the epidermis, cortex, and/or fibrous roots of 5-yr-old healthy and diseased red-skin ginseng. The inorganic element composition, phenolic compound concentration, reactive oxidation system, antioxidant concentrations such as ascorbate and glutathione, activities of enzymes related to phenolic metabolism and oxidation, and antioxidative system particularly the ascorbate-glutathione cycle were examined using conventional methods. Results: Aluminum (Al), iron (Fe), magnesium, and phosphorus were increased, whereas manganese was unchanged and calcium was decreased in the epidermis and fibrous root of red-skin ginseng, which also contained higher levels of phenolic compounds, higher activities of the phenolic compound-synthesizing enzyme phenylalanine ammonia-lyase and the phenolic compound oxidation-related enzymes guaiacol peroxidase and polyphenoloxidase. As the substrate of guaiacol peroxidase, higher levels of $H_2O_2$ and correspondingly higher activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase were found in red-skin ginseng. Increased levels of ascorbate and glutathione; increased activities of $\text\tiny L$-galactose 1-dehydrogenase, ascorbate peroxidase, ascorbic acid oxidase, and glutathione reductase; and lower activities of dehydroascorbate reductase, monodehydroascorbate reductase, and glutathione peroxidase were found in red-skin ginseng. Glutathione-S-transferase activity remained constant. Conclusion: Hence, higher element accumulation, particularly Al and Fe, activated multiple enzymes related to accumulation of phenolic compounds and their oxidation. This might contribute to red-skin symptoms in ginseng. It is proposed that antioxidant and antioxidative enzymes, especially those involved in ascorbate-glutathione cycles, are activated to protect against phenolic compound oxidation.
Simultaneous removal technologies of multi-pollutants such as particulate matters (PMs), NOx, SOx, VOCs and ammonia have received consistent attention due to the enhancement of pollutant abatement efficiency in addition to the stringent environmental regulation and emission standard. Pretreatment of insoluble NO by an ozone oxidation can be considered to be more effective route for saving space occupation as well as operation cost in comparison with that of traditional selective catalytic reduction (SCR) process. Moreover the primary advantage of ozone oxidation process is that the simultaneous removal with acidic gas including SOx is also available. Herein, we highlight recent studies of multi-pollutant abatement via ozone oxidation process and the promising research topics for better application in industrial sectors.

Among the livestock, chickens are raised because of the merit ingested protein in low-priced cost of production and are primary livestock increased the consumption of meat. The factors of influencing condition, odor is the most important factor. Odor substances are ammonia, amines, hydrogen sulfide and mercaptan which come from night soil. Livestock are prevented from rearing by means of these odor substances. Though the henhouse is heated using hot air type heater in the winter season, it is ventilated for the control of odor because of the increase of odor concentration. In the present work, composite catalytic system combined the existing facilities(hot air type heater) with catalytic system was developed, it could controled odor and hazardous gas using the oxidation/reduction reaction without extra operating cost. Moreover, the purpose of this work is to develop the catalysts which are cost competitive and can maximize energy efficiency. The catalysts are noble metal(Pt-Rh) and composite transition metal(Mn) type.
The lack of seed sludges for Ammonium Oxidizing Bacteria (AOB) and slow-growing ANaerobic AMMonium OXidation (ANAMMOX) bacteria is one of the major problem for large-scale application. In this study, $24m^3$ of single-stage SBR (Sequencing Batch Reactor) was operated to remove nitrogen from reject water using AOB and ANAMMOX bacteria cultivated from activated sludge in the field. The ANAMMOX activity was found after 44 days of cultivation in the ANAMMOX cultivation reactor, and then $0.66kg\;N/m^3/d$ of the nitrogen removal rate was achieved at $0.78kg\;N/m^3/d$ of the nitrogen loading rate at 153 days of cultivation. The AOB cultivation reactor showed $0.2kg\;N/m^3/d$ of nitrite production rate at $0.4kg\;N/m^3/d$ of nitrogen loading rate after 36 days of operation. The cultivated ANAMMOX bacteria and AOB was mixed into the single-stage SBR. The feed distribution was applied to remove total nitrogen stably in the single-stage SBR. The nitrogen removal rate in the single-stage SBR was gradually enhanced with an increase of specific activities of both AOB and ANAMMOX bacteria by showing $0.49kg\;N/m^3/d$ of the nitrogen removal rate at $0.56kg\;N/m^3/d$ of the nitrogen loading rate at 54 days of operation.
