Complex viscosities of dense alumina slurries over 45% volume density measured with the oscillating method were correlated well with Casson model. Among several monosaccharides and disaccharides studied here, fructose and sucrose showed good rheological properties in making dense alumina slurry plastic compared to other monosaccharides and disaccharides like glucose, galactose, arabinose, xylose and maltose. Sucrose content or additional water content in dense alumina slurry with sucrose contributed to the plasticity of the slurries.
The mutagenic activity of four phenothiazine derivatives such as chlorpromazine, perphenazine, trifluoperazine and thioridazine in conjunction with UV-A irradiation or not based on the Ames plate incorporation test in the presence and absence of liver microsomal enzyme(S9 fraction). None of these compounds and their photo-excited were detected as mutagen in the Salmonella microsome assay with TA 98 and TA 100.
Cell wall (lactic acid bacteria-sonicated precipitate ; LAB-SP) and cytosoll(lactic acid bacteria-sonicated supernatant ; LAB-SS) fractions were prepared from kimchi fermenting lactic acid bacteria such as Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Lactobacillus brevis, Lactobacillus fermentum , Lactobacillus plantarum and Pediococcus acidilactici, with Lactobacillus acidophillus isolated from yogurt. Using the Ames mutagenicity test and SOS chormotest system, the antimutagenic acitivity of those cell fractions was studied . One hundered eighty $\mu$l of LAB-SP from lactic acid bacteria isolated from kimchi, excepting Pediococcus acidilactici, supressed the mutagenicity of 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide(4-NQO) in Ames mutagenicity test and SOS chromotes system , by above 90% and 60% , respectively. LAB-SP from lactic acid bacteria also inhibited the mutagenicity mediated by 3-amino-1-methyl-5H-pyrido [4,3-b]indole (Trp-P-2). Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus plantarum, and Lactobacillus acidphillus had higher antimutagenicity against Trp-P-2). Lactobacillus fermentum , Lactobacillus plantarum , and Lactobacillus acidphillus had higher antimutagenicity against Trp-P-2 than the other lactic acid bacteria. However, LAB-SS of lactic acid bacteria did not show any mutagenic activity against 4-NQO in Ames mutagenicity test and SOS chromotest systems. On the mutagenicity of MEIQ and Trp-P-2 , LAB-SS of lactic acid bacteria from kimchi or dairy products exhibited a weaker inhibitory effect than LAB-SP of those bacteria. These results represent that, whether the lactic acid bacteria from kimchi are viable or nonviable, antimutagenic acitivity was still effective. We suggest that the strong, antimutaganic activity of lactic acid bacteria might be found in the cell wall fraction , rather than in the cytosol fraction.
Anaerobic co-digestion of swine manure and food waste for biogas production was performed in serum bottles at various volatile solids(VS) contents and mixing ratios of two substrates(swine manure:food waste=$100:0{\sim}0:100$). Through kinetic mode of surface methodology, the methane production was fitted to a Gompertz equation. The ultimate methane production potential of swine manure alone was lower than that of food waste regardless of VS contents. However, it was appeared that maximum methane production potentials in 80 : 20 of the mixing rate at VS 3% was enhanced at 144.7%, compared to its only swine manure. The potential increased up to 815.71 ml/g VS fed as VS concentration and food composition increased up to 3.0% and 20%, respectively. The ultimate amount of methane produced had significantly a positive relationship with that of methane yield rate. Overall, it would be strongly recommended that feeding stocks use 20% of mixing ratio of food waste based on VS 3% contents when operating the anaerobic reactor on site at $35^{\circ}C$ if not have treatment of its anaerobic waste water.
Ames test using special strains which are histidine requiring mutant of Salmonella typhimufium , is widely utilized as short-term bioassay to evaluate the genotoxicity of chemicals. This method requires the liver microsome(5-9 fraction) to provide mammalian metabolism of the compounds, Therefore, the mutagenic potency of the chemicals is affected by not only the intrinsic properties of them but also the efficiency of the in vitro microsomal activation system. For this reason, the complex mixtures such as environmental pollutants from occupational sources, natural products or cigarette smoke condensates(CSC) , might be often appeared the false results. Induction of sister chromatid exchange(SCE) in cultured cells is known as another sensitive and powerful tool for the measurement of genotoxicity and the method has also an advantage which is able to apply to the in vitro and in vivo systems. In the present study, the inducibilities of revertant colonies in tester strain TA98 and SCE in human Iymphocytes by positive controls and total particulated materials(TPM) obtained from various brand(domastic and imported) cigarettes were compared in order to investigate whether the results in Ames test are in agreement with those in SCE analysis. The mutagenic activities of well known mutagens such as B(a)P showed excellent dose-response in the both methods although the induction mechanism was different each other, but cyclophosphamide resulted such effect only in SCE analysis. Most TPM tested showed a similar pattern in the mutagenic activities in those methods. However, only two(one imported brand and one domestic sample cigarettes) among the TMP obtained from various cigarettes appeared the higher induction in SCE than Ames test.
Potential mutagenicity of ten heated edible mountain herbs were examined with spore recassay, Ames test and DNA breaking test. Samples of edible mountain herbs were prepared with water extraction at $100^{\circ}C$ for 20 minutes. With the rec-assay, no significant mutagengic activity could be obtained from all of the samples, but among the eight of metal ions added to sample solution, $Pb^{2+}$ to R. crispus heated juice, $Zn^{2+}$ to L. fischeri and S. bracycarpa heated juice increased mutagenic activity of the samples. With the Ames test and DNA breaking test, all of the samples did not show mutagenicity. However, breaking action was activated on heated L. fischeri, P. japonicus. A. triphylla and A. tataricus juices in the presence of 25mM $Cu^{2+}$. But heated A. elata, H. aurantiaca, A. triphylla, S. bracycarpa and A. scaber juices were inactivated in the presence of 25mM $Fe^{2+}$. Desmutagenic activities against benzo$({\alpha})$pyrene significantly increased as increasing concentration of the heated edible mountain herb juices.

This study was carried out to investigate the antimutagenic affect of crude and heated comfrey extract on N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG), benzo${(\alpha)}$pyrene (B${(\alpha)}$P) and 3-amino-1, 4-dimethyl-5H-pyri-do [4,3-b] indole (Trp-P-1). In spore rec-assay using Bacillus subtilis $H17(rec^+)$ and $M45(rec^-),$ crude comfrey extract showed strong antimutagenic effects on MNNG in the concentration of $40{\mu}l/disc$(p<0.01). In the Ames test using Salmonella typhimurium TA98 and TA100, the crude comfrey extract suppressed about 43% and 52% in the mutagenesis induced by $B{(\alpha)}P.$ However, the heated comfrey extract strongly suppressed about 75% and 76% in the mutagenesis in Salmonella typhimurium TA98 and TA100 induced by Trp-P-1(p<0.01).
The three medicinal herbs, Astragali Radix, Glycyrrhizae Radix and Aurantii nobilis Pericarpium, irradiated with γ-rays have been tested for their possible genotoxicity. The hot water extracts of the 10 kGy γ-ray irradiated herbs were examined in the Salmonella mutagenicity test(histidine reversion assay; Ames test) using Salmonella. typhimurium TA98 and TA100 as tester strains. No mutagenicity was detected in this assay both with and without metabolic activation. The safety of the herbs irradiated with γ-rays at tactical doses needs to be evaluated in further tests of genotoxicity in vivo and chronic and reproductive toxicity.
