  • We have investigated the effect of the ambient gases on the characteristics of AZO thin films for the OLED (organic light emitting diodes) devices. These AZO thin films are deposited by rf-magnetron sputtering under different ambient gases (Ar, Ar+$O_2$, and Ar+$H_2$) at 300. In order to investigate the influences of the oxygen and hydrogen, the flow rate of oxygen and hydrogen in argon mixing gas has been changed from 0.2sccm to 1sccm and from 0.5sccm to 5sccm, respectively. The AZO thin films were preferred oriented to (002) direction regardless of ambient gases. The electrical resistivity of AZO film increased with increasing flow rate of $O_2$ under Ar+$O_2$ while under Ar+$H_2$ atmosphere the electrical resistivity showed minimum value near 1sccm of $H_2$. All the films showed the average transmittance over 80% in the visible range. The OLED device was fabricated with different AZO substrates made by configuration of AZO/$\acute{a}$-NPD/DPVB/$Alq_3$/LiF/Al to elucidate the performance of AZO substrate.

  • The position of the light source, illuminance distribution, and color temperature were evaluated in each lighting environment for the three main activities in a living room - 'watching TV,' 'reading' and 'relaxing.' In 'watching TV', the experiment was done to estimate the degree of comfort felt by the subjects when they watch static video and moving video, respectably, with different ambient brightness, with or without partial lighting above the TV set, and with different color temperatures. In 'reading', the comfortableness was estimated by the illuminance ratio of the ambient lighting to the lighting for reading and by the difference in color temperature. And in 'relaxing', the comfortableness was estimated by means of the ambient brightness, use/no use of a relaxing lamp, and color temperature. This experiment determined the general satisfaction for each visual act and the optimum lighting environment to reduce glare.

  • Built-in voltage in ITO/$Alq_3$/ Al organic light-emitting diodes was studied by varying a thickness of $Alq_3$ layer using modulated photocurrent technique at ambient condition. A thickness of the $Alq_3$ layer was varied from 100 to 250 nm. From the bias voltage-dependent photocurrent, built-in voltage of the device was able to be determined. The obtained built-in voltage is about 0.8 V irrespective of the $Alq_3$ layer thickness in the device. This value of built-in voltage confirms that the built-in voltage is generated due to a difference of work function of the anode and cathode. The $Alq_3$ layer thickness independent built-in voltage indicates that the built-in electric field in the device is uniform across the organic layer.

  • We have developed variety of LCD technologies for the out-door display, which improve out-door readability as well as reliability from external impacts. This improvement was made possible by new approach on LCD cell optical design and modification of LCD surface, which allows surrounding light to be transmitted to enhance the visibility and at the same time filtering out light, which are considered to be source of noise in terms of visibility. This technology enables users to maintain high display performance in both in-door & out-door environments moreover alternatively choosing in-door/out-door.

  • A light-emitting silicon material was prepared by electrochemical etching of n-Si single crystal wafers in a solution of hydrofluoric acid and ethanol. Visible photoluminescence from the silicon was inhomogeneous and decayed rapidly in the ambient laboratory conditions or with photoirradiation. Substantial improvements in photoluminescence which include little-dependent luminescence peak energy with excitation energy variation and longer-lasting room temperature visible photoluminescence were achieved when the surface of photoluminescent silicon material was derivatized with the surface modifier of octadecylmercaptan. Surface modification of the photoluminescent silicon was evidenced by the measurements of contact angles of static water drops, FT-IR spectra and XPS data, in addition to changed photoluminescence. Similar improvements in photoluminescence were observed with the light-emitting silicon treated with dodecylmercaptan, but not with octadecane. The present results indicate that sulfurs of octadecylmercaptans or dodecylmercaptans appear to coordinate the surface Si atoms of LESi and perturb the surface states to significantly change the luminescent characteristics of LESi.

  • We investigate the temperature dependence of the phosphor conversion efficiency (PCE) of the phosphor material used in a white light-emitting diode (LED) consisting of a blue LED chip and yellow phosphor. The temperature dependence of the wall-plug efficiency (WPE) of the blue LED chip and the PCE of phosphor are separately determined by analyzing the measured spectrum of the white LED sample. As the ambient temperature increases from 20 to $80^{\circ}C$, WPE and PCE decrease by about 4.5% and 6%, respectively, which means that the contribution of the phosphor to the thermal characteristics of white LEDs can be more important than that of the blue LED chip. When PCE is decomposed into the Stokes-shift efficiency and the phosphor quantum efficiency (QE), it is found that the Stokes-shift efficiency is only weakly dependent on temperature, while the QE decreases rapidly with temperature. From 20 to $80^{\circ}C$ the phosphor QE decreases by about 7% while the Stokes-shift efficiency changes by less than 1%.

  • This study was conducted to determine the changes of the ecological niche breadth and niche overlap of Quercus acutissima and Quercus variabilis under elevated $CO_2$ concentrations and under elevated temperature conditions. We investigated the growth responses by environmental factor, $CO_2$ concentration, air temperature, light, soil moisture and nutrients. Rising $CO_2$ concentration was treated with 1.6 times than control (ambient) and increased temperature with $2.2^{\circ}C$ above the control (ambient) in the glass greenhouse. Ecological niche breadth and niche overlap was calculated the two oak species (Q. acutissima and Q. variabilis), which were cultivated with light, soil moisture and nutrient gradients at four levels. As a result, the ecological niche breadth of Quercus acutissima was determined to be increased under the warming treatment, but decreased under soil moisture and nutrient environments. The ecological niche breadth of Quercus variabilis was increased under light, soil moisture and nutrients of the warming treatment than control. Ecological niche overlap between Quercus acutissima-Quercus variabilis was increased under light of the warming treatment than control, but decreased under soil moisture and nutrient environments. These results means that two oak species are more severe competition in light environments than soil moisture and nutrient environments. According to analyses of the Cluster and PCA, the two oak species were more sensitive react under light environment than to elevated $CO_2$ concentration or elevated temperature.

  • Vertical-structure light-emitting diodes (V-LEDs) by laser lift-off (LLO) have been exploited for high-efficiency GaN-based LEDs of solid-state lightings. In V-LEDs, emitted light from active regions is reflected-up from reflective ohmic contacts on p-GaN. Therefore, silver (Ag) is very suitable for reflective contacts due to its high reflectance (>95%) and surface plasmon coupling to visible light emissions. In addition, low contact resistivity has been obtained from Ag-based ohmic contacts annealed in oxygen ambient. However, annealing in oxygen ambient causes Ag to be oxidized and/or agglomerated, leading to degradation in both electrical and optical properties. Therefore, preventing Ag from oxidation and/or agglomeration is a key aspect for high-performance V-LEDs. In this work, we demonstrate the enhanced thermal stability of Ag-based Ohmic contact to p-GaN by reducing the thermal compressive stress. The thermal compressive stress due to the large difference in CTE between GaN ($5.6{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$) and Ag ($18.9{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$) accelerate the diffusion of Ag atoms, leading to Ag agglomeration. Therefore, by increasing the additional residual tensile stress in Ag film, the thermal compressive stress could be reduced, resulting in the enhancement of Ag agglomeration resistance. We employ the thin Ni layer in Ag film to form Ni/Ag mutli-layer structure, because the lattice constant of NiO ($4.176\;{\AA}$ is larger than that of Ag ($4.086\;{\AA}$). High-resolution symmetric and asymmetric X-ray diffraction was used to measure the in-plane strain of Ag films. Due to the expansion of lattice constant by oxidation of Ni into NiO layer, Ag layer in Ni/Ag multi-layer structure was tensilely strained after annealing. Based on experimental results, it could be concluded that the reduction of thermal compressive stress by additional tensile stress in Ag film plays a critical role to enhance the thermal stability of Ag-based Ohmic contact to p-GaN.

  • This paper investigates the optimal design of an electronic ballast of half bridge inverter type in consideration of the variation of ambient temperatures for a 15[W] triple-type compact fluorescent lamp. The performances of electronic ballasts under different values or the capacitance ratio in the resonant tank circuit are compared with each other in the practical temperature range between 15[$^{\circ}C$] and 35[$^{\circ}C$] to determine its optimum value. As a result, the optimum value is found to be such that $C_1/C_2=10$ at which value starting of the lamp is most stable and light output reaches its maximum value with lowest variation.

  • The MTF(modulation transfer function) measuring system with a linear CCD(charge coupled-device) was constructed to cvaluate a color CRT(catode ray tube). The measured MTF values were corrected by considering the spectral response and the pixel sizes of CCD. The effects of a spot size, video bandwidth, pitch of shadow mask holes, display luminance, and ambient illumination on image quality were studied. The uniformity of resolution and the contrast Ioss by ambient light of the color CRT monitor were measured, and the results were analyzed by MTFA(modulation threshold area).
