  • Core technologies for integrating hydrogen gas sensor were investigated. In this study, the thermally isolated micro-hot-plate with areas of $100{\times}100-260{\times}260{\mu}m^2$ was fabricated by utilizing surface micromachining technique that provides better manufacturing yield than bulk micromachining counterpart. The optimum design of the sensor was peformed by analyzing the thermal profile of the structure obtained from a ANSYS simulator. The 400-nm-thick polysilicon films doped with phosphorus, the 300-nm-thick aluminum films, and the 200-nm-thick $SnO_2$(or ZnO)films were used as the micro-heater material, the temperature sensor material, and the gas sensitive material, respectively. The experimental results show that the developed gas sensors can detect $H_2$ concentration as low as 1 ppm.

  • As a test specimen. an aluminum extruded panel with a dimension of 640 mm$\times$740 mm$\times$40mm is considered. This plate has 9 mm thickness if mass is concerned. Based on the FEM modeling in rigidity. the specimen turns out to be 32 mm and 12 mm thickness In isotropic steel plate. Also, the characteristics of transmission loss on the honeycomb structure have been examined experimentally with reverberation chamber. A honeycomb structure follows mass law in above 800 Hz. In order to improve the noise transmission effect in lower frequency, extra damping treatment is suggested. As a conclusion. the examined honeycomb structure Is designed to Improve the bending rigidity, not for the noise reduction.

  • The Friction spot dissimilar welding of galvanized steel/Al6061-T6 was performed to investigate the mechanical characteristics of the joints. The presence of thin film of aluminum oxide on the surface and melting of zinc in the coating, made substandard joint characteristics for dissimilar Friction spot joining(FSJ) performed with out removing the coating. Where as, for dissimilar FSJ of galvanized steel/Al6061-T6 after removing the coating, superior agitation and welding quality has been obtained for a configuration of galvanized steel as the upper plate and Al6061-T6 as lower plate. The results from tensile tests and microscopic examination for various combinations of the welding parameters have been presented.

  • Ultrasonic guided waves are gaining increasing attention for the inspection of platelike and rodlike structures. At the same time, inspection methods that do not require contact with the test piece are being developed for advanced applications. This paper capitalizes on recent advances in the areas of guided wave ultrasonics and noncontact ultrasonics to demonstrate a superior method for the nondestructive detection of thinning defects simulating hidden corrosion in thin aluminum plates. The proposed approach uses EMAT(electro-magnetic acoustic transducer) for the noncontact generation and detection of guided plate waves. Interesting features in the dispersive behavior of selected guided modes are used for the detection of plate thinning. It is shown that mode cutoff measurements provide a qualitative detection of thinning defects. Measurement of the mode group velocity can be also used to quantify of thinning depth.

  • Aluminum thin plate coated with epoxy resin containing about 20wt% brass powder, was applied to fins of heat exchanger. We carried out a series of detailed examinations to evaluate the anti-bacterial performance of the plate and heat exchanger (fan coil unit). In the presence of water or moisture, copper ions which have an anti-bacterial ability eluted from brass powder and showed sufficient effects on many kinds of bacteria. We also evaluated the anti-bacterial performance quantitatively by use of the index API (Anti-bacterial Performance Index) which has already been proposed by authors.

  • In this paper, the experiments have been conducted to measure the residual velocity for 3.5g steel ball perforating light weight metal plates of aluminum alloy and magnesium alloy. Non-contact electro-magnetic sensors were used to measure the velocity of steel ball before/after perforating plates. The thicknesses of specimens used were about 2.8mm and 4.8mm. The impact velocities of steel ball were from 662m/s to 3594m/s. With same conditions, numerical analysis using Autodyn 2D has been conducted. The results of numerical analysis corresponded with those of experiments. Also, It is suggested that the difference between the residual velocity of experiment or numerical analysis and that of THOR experimental equation of BRL grew smaller as the impact velocity were increased.

  • This paper proposes a new TR-based baseline-free SHM technique in which the time-reversal (TR) property of the guided Lamb waves is utilized. The new TR-based SHM technique has two distinct features when compared with the other TR-based SHM techniques: (1) The backward TR process commonly conducted by the measurement is replaced by the computation-based process; (2) In place of the comparison method, the TOF information of the damage signal extracted from the reconstructed signal is used for the damage diagnosis in conjunction with the imaging method which enables us to represent the damage as an image. The proposed TR-based SHM technique is then validated through the damage diagnosis experiment for an aluminum plate with a damage at different locations.

  • The solar panel that consists of copper plate and copper tube was successfully welded by ultrasonic seam welding. However it was not only expensive the copper material but also ultrasonic welding has many problem such as high error rate, difficulty of dissimilar material welding, noise, etc. At this study, the laser welding of solar panel with aluminum plate instead of copper. The welding were carried out with the pulsed Nd:YAG laser and the weld bead geometry was measured with the variation of pulse energy. Consequently, there was no difference between the ultrasonic and the laser welding on the performance of heat transfer capacities. Also the formation of intermetalic compound such as CuAl2 was increased with the pulse energy.

  • A simple method has been developed to detect the bonding condition of active fiber composites (AFC) adhered to the surface of a host structure. Large deformation actuating capability is one of important features of AFC. Edge delamination in adhesive layer due to large interfacial shear stress at the free edge is typically resulted from axial strain mismatch between bonded materials. AFC patch possesses very good flexibility and toughness. When an AFC patch is partially delaminated from host structure, there remains sensing capability in the debonded part. The debonding size can be determined through axial resonance measured by the interdigitated electrodes symmetrically aligned on opposite surfaces of the patch. The electrical impedance and modal response of the AFC patch in part adhered to an aluminum plate were investigated in a broad frequency range. Debonding ratio of the AFC patch is in inverse proportion to the resonant frequency of the fundamental mode. Feasibility of in-situ detecting the progressive delamination between AFC patch and host plate is demonstrated.

  • In this paper, we propose two methods for AE source location on the material with unknown AE wave velocity. By this method, we can apply this method to arbitrary material of which properties are not known exactly. Also, in this paper, the mechanism of error generation in both methods are discussed and performances are compared by using computer simulation and experiments which uses a lead break as the AE source on the aluminum plate.
