  • Anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) has been widely used for the development and fabrication of nano-powder with various morphologies such as particle, wire, rod, and tube. So far, many researchers have reported about shape control and fabrication of AAO films. However, they have reported on the shape control with different diameter and length of anodic aluminum oxide mainly. We present a combined mild-hard (or hard-mild) anodization to prepare shape-controlled AAO films. Two main parameters which are combination mild-hard (or hard-mild) anodization and run-time of voltage control are applied in this work. The voltages of mild and hard anodization are respectively 40 and 80 V. Anodization was conducted on the aluminum sheet in 0.3 mole oxalic acid at $4^{\circ}C$. AAO films with morphologies of varying interpore distance, branch-shaped pore, diameter-modulated pore and long funnel-shaped pore were fabricated. Those shapes will be able to apply to fabricate novel nano-materials with potential application which is especially a support to prevent volume expansion of inserted active materials, such as metal silicon or tin powder, in lithium ion battery. The silicon powder electrode using an AAO as a support shows outstanding cycle performance as 1003 mAh/g up to 200 cycles.

  • Porous alumina prepared by anodization has been widely studied since it shows very regular nanostructures at inexpensive prices. In this article, porous alumina is obtained by anodization of aluminum in the oxalic acid. After the first formed oxide is selectively removed from the aluminum substrate, the hexagonal nanostructures on the fresh aluminum are converted to nanodots by the second anodization in boric acid. Nanodots are arrayed in the convex of the hexagonal nanostructures. The optimization condition for the fabrication of nanodots with a height of 20 nm is investigated in detail. Subsequently, a gold film is deposited on the nanodots, resulting in the formation of gold nanodots arrays which are probably interesting substrate for biosensor applications.

  • Anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) with pores of various diameter, density, and thickness values was obtained through control of the anodization parameters including voltage, temperature, pore widening time, anodization time, etc. The pore diameter was controlled by a pore widening in an etchant, and alumina templates having stepped nano-channels were fabricated by repetition of anodization and pore widening processes. Stepped carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were then grown on the stepped AAO templates by pyrolysis of acetylene without using the catalyst. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy images revealed that CNTs have a multi-wall structure made of graphite flakes of several nm sizes. The current-voltage characteristic of the sloped and linear CNTs were also examined.

  • Fabrication of Anodic aluminum oxide under DC vias condition has been studied. When bias and time of anodic aluminum oxide process change, the hole distance and diameter size change. Comparison of fabricated AAO between AC vias and DC vias condition has been studied in this experiment. The first and second anodization of one aluminum is done by using DC and AC power supplier. And first and second anodization of another aluminum is done by DC power supplier. The size of the aluminum is $1cm{\times}3cm$, and second anodic aluminum oxide process takes about 45min. It is found that the hexagonal shape appears on the surface of the AAO. AC power source can fabricate aao which have a nano hole array. We can see that the hole on the surface of the AC vias has a better rounded hole than DC vias AAO. we need more data so we can get characteristic about AC power generated AAO.

  • Aluminum was electrochemically etched in acid solution and the surface area was magnified by the formation of etch pits. Etched aluminum was covered with a compact and dense dielectric oxide film by anodization and applied to the aluminum electrolytic capacitor electrode. Capacitance of aluminum electrolytic capacitor is closely related with surface area, which depends on size and number of etch pits. Size of etch pits need to be controlled because inside of the pits can be buried by the formation of dielectric oxide film. In this work, the effect of ultrasound pretreatment on the aluminum etch pit formation and capacitance were investigated. Additionally, the relationship between the second etching effect on pit size and capacitance was studied.

  • PMMA light guiding plate with nano-sized pattern was fabricated using anodized aluminum oxide membrane as a template for nano imprint lithography. Nano-sized pore arrays were prepared by the self-organization processes of the anodic oxidation using the aluminum plate with 99.999% purity. Since the aluminum plate has a rough surface, the aluminum plate with thickness of 1mm was anodized after the pre-treatments of chemical polishing, and electrochemical polishing. The surface morphology of the alumina obtained by the first anodization process was controlled by the concentration of electrochemical solution during the first anodization. The surface morphology of the alumina was also changed according to temperature of the solution during chemical polishing performed after first anodization. The pore widening process was employed for obtaining the one-channel with flat surface and height of the channel because the pores of the alumina membrane prepared by the fixed voltage method shows the structure of two-channel with rough surface. It is shown from SPM results that the nano-sized pattern on PMMA light guiding plate fabricated by nano imprint lithography method was well transferred from that of anodized aluminum oxide template.

  • Anodization techniques are widely used in the area of surface treatment of aluminum alloys because of its simplicity, low-cost and good corrosion resistance. In this study, we investigated the relationship between the properties (porosity and thickness) of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) and its corrosion behavior. Aluminum 5052 alloy was anodized in 0.3 M oxalic acid at $0^{\circ}C$. The anodizing of aluminum 5052 was performed at 20 V, 40 V and 60 V for various durations. The corrosion behavior was studied in 3.5 wt % NaCl using potentiodynamic polarization method. Results showed that the pore diameter and thickness increased as voltage and anodization time increased. The relatively thick oxide film revealed a lower corrosion current density and a higher corrosion potential value.

  • Nanoporous anodic alumina membranes (NAAM) with high-density through-hole pores fabricated by hard anodization of aluminum in 0.3 M oxalic acid under the applied voltage of 40 (mild anodization), 80, 100, 120 and 140 V were investigated. The current-time responses monitored using a PC-controlled anodization cell and the corresponding pore structures attainable from field-enhanced scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) were analyzed in order to establish the optimum fabrication process. The nanoporous structure can be produced for all the voltage conditions, while the stabilized through-hole pore formation seems to occur at 40, 80 and 140 V. The growth rate under 140 V hard anodization was over 30 times higher than under 40 V mild anodization (1.5 um/hr).

  • To date, porous alumina structures have been implemented by electrochemical anodization technique. The anodizing methods can easy to make a porous aluminum oxide film with a regular arrangement, but oxide film with complex structure type such as pillar-on-pore is relatively difficult to implement. Therefore, this study aims to observe the change of anodized oxide pore size, thickness, and structure in a phosphoric acid solution according to applied anodization voltage conditions. For the implementation of hybrid composite oxide structures, it is possible to create by modulating anodization voltage. The experimental conditions were performed at the applied anodization voltage of 100 V and 120 V in 10% phosphoric acid solution, respectively. The experimental results were able to observe the structure of oxides in the form of porous and composite structures (pillar-on-pore), depending on each condition.

  • Nanoporous alumina with highly ordered pore arrays, which is prepared based on electrochemical anodization under the controlled conditions, has attracted great attention due to the variety of its applications. In case of porous alumina, the manipulation of nanoporous structures under different electrochemical conditions and their formation mechanisms have been studied for a long time. Recently, its principles have been applied to other valve metals. Especially, there have been a big success in the preparation of titania nanotubes via the anodization of titanium. In this paper, we review the anodization of aluminum and recent trends in anodization of Ti and other valve metals based on the principles of aluminum anodization.
