Effects of $\alpha-AI_2O_3$ Seeding on Phase Formation and Densification Characteristics of Alumina-Mullite-Zirconia Composites (Alumina-Zirconia-Mullite 복합체의 상생성 및 치밀화 특성에 미치는 $\alpha-AI_2O_3$ Seeding 효과)

  • Compositionally triphasic boehmite-silica-zirconia composite gels were prepared by a multiphasic sol-gel route. Phase-formation characteristics and densification behavior of the gel compacts were examined with and without $\alpha$-Al2O3 seeding. In the unseeded triphasic gels, both $\alpha$-Al2O3 and mullite crystallize simultaneously at 130$0^{\circ}C$. On the other hand, the $\alpha$-Al2O3 seeding selectively induces the formation of corundum phase ($\alpha$-Al2O3) at a significantly lower temperature (~110$0^{\circ}C$) and facilitates an epitaxial growth of $\alpha$-Al2O3 between 1100~130$0^{\circ}C$. The densification of alumina-mullite-zirconia composite (derived from the triphasic gels) was also enhanced by the $\alpha$-Al2O3 seeding, and this was attributed to the delayed crystallization of mullite in the $\alpha$-Al2O3 seeded gel.

Preparation and Characterization of Alumina Thin Film by Sol-Gel Method (III) Preparation of Anti-Reflective Coating Glass (졸겔법에 의한 알루미나 박막의 제조 및 특성 (III) 저반사 코팅유리의 제조)

  • The coating condition of reproducible anti-reflective coating film and the light transmittance characteristics of the prepared anti-reflective coating glass were investigated as a study for the preparation of single-layer anti-reflective coating glasss. In case of coating with the sol in which the solvent was substituted with the ethanol with the addition of 0.1 mol HNO3, the coated glass showed the minimum value of the refractive index of 1.464, light transmittance of 94.2% at 550nm standard wavelength which is 3.2% higher than that of the parent glass, and the reflectance in the entire wave range of visible light. The refractive index represented its minimum at the sol concentration of 1.0 mol per 100mols of water and the higher the sol concentration, the higher the refractive index, resulting in the decrease of the light transmitance. The production condition of the reproducible anti-reflective coating on glass with the maximum transmittance of 94.2% was 4cm/min of withdrawal speed, 40$0^{\circ}C$ and 1 hour of heat treatment temperature and time, resulting in the film thickness of 94nm.

Fabrication and Characterization of Alumina Sol for Coating by a Method of the Mechanical Milling (기계적 분쇄방법을 통한 코팅용 알루미나 졸의 제조 및 평가)

  • $Al_2O_3$ sol with long-term stability was prepared by mechanical milling. Thin films were evaluated and created for use as coating materials. The particle size of the manufactured sol was 98 nm when 2 wt% of nitric acid was added. This indicates that the viscosity of the sol is 12 cps and that it has long-term stability. The thickness of the thin films, which varied from 100 nm to 500 nm, could be managed by adjusting the draw rate and the amount of an organic additive. A thin film heated to $500^{\circ}C$ indicated a hydrophilic property against water and excellent permeability against a visible ray.

  • A mixture of aluminum isopropoxide (Al(OC3H7i)3) solution and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution was hydrolyzed in the range between pH 1~14. the powder obtained from sol-gel process was calcined at several temperatures and crystallization behaviors of various samples were investigated. The hydrolyzed sols of pH 1~6 wre clear, or near clear. On the other hand, powder precipitated from sols of pH 7~14. The sample obtained from pH 3 solution crystallized via complicated route, and $\beta$-Al2O3 and $\beta$"-Al2O3 phases appeared at lower temperature than samples from other pH conditions. And the quantity of remained $\beta$"-Al2O3 phase after heat treatment at 150$0^{\circ}C$ was more than samples from other pH conditions. After sintering, ionic conductivities were 1.3$\times$10-4S.cm-1 to 0.76$\times$10-4S.cm-1.0-4S.cm-1.

  • The titania membrane thickness coated on the porous alumina support by the sol-gel method was analyzed using the slipcasting model. The thickness of calcined membrane layers increased linearly from 1.3 to 3.8 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ with the square root of the dipping time (4~40 min). Growth rates of the thickness of wet gels and calcined layers were well described quantitatively by the slipcasting model. Through the regression of experimental data using model equations, the permeability and the pressure drop across wet gels, and the thickness and their growth rate constants of wet gels and calcined layers could be determined. It was also known that the gellation concentration of the TiO2 sol used in this work and the porosity of wet gel layes were 25 mol/ι and 0.53, respectively.

  • The sols prepared by dialyzing solutions, in which the hydrolyzed precipitates of TEOT or directly Ti(OC3H7)4 were resolved, were the nanoparticulate sol with the average particle size less than 7 nm and the anatase crystal phase. In the pH range of 1.5 to 2.9, the particle size of the nanoparticulate TiO2 sols (0.09 mol/ι) increased gradually upto 15 nm~26nm with the increase of pH in the initial aging state but the sols were transparent all the time, and stable without growin any more after 30 days. When the slipcasted porous alumina tubes were coated by the sol-gel dipping method, the minimum particle size and the aging time for forming the coated gel layer at the given pH were optimized. For obtaining the very thin crack-free and reproducible membrane coating, the use of a nanoparticulate TiO2 sol (0.09 mol/ι) aged for about 30 dyas at pH=2.0 was found to be the best.

Change of Particle Size of Spherical Alumina Powders Prepared by Emulsion Method in the Region of Low Hydroxypropylcellulose Concentration (저농도의 HPC 영역에서 에멀젼법에 의해 제조된 구형 알루미나 분말의 입자 크기 변화)

  • Spherical alumina gel powders were produced by hydrolysis of aluminum sec-butoxide (Al(sec-OC4H9)3) in a n-octanol/acetonitrile mixed solvent. The enlargement of particle size was induced by increasing HPC (hydroypropylcellulose) concentration (0.005, 0.1, and 0.05 g/ι) and emulsion-state aging time (10 min and 360 min). Mean particle sizes of dried alumina gel powders increased from 1.4 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 3.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ at 10-min emulsion-state aging time and from 1.9${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 4.1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ at 360-min emulsion-state aging time as HPC concentration increased from 0.005 g/ι to 0.05 g/ι. At the same HPC concentration, particle size of dried alumina gel powder increased with increasing of emulsion-state aging time from 10 min to 360 min. The increase in the average particle size of dried alumina gel powder with increase in HPC concentration was interpreted as the enlargement of particles from alkoxide emulsions unprotected by HPC. The produced dried gel powder calcined at 115$0^{\circ}C$ for one hour transformed to $\alpha$-alumina.

  • A new grinding wheel was developed for the high performance grinding of difficult-to-grinding materials. The grinding performance of the newly developed wheel including grinding forces, grinding ratio, and surface roughness of ground surface was evaluated through experiments. Experimental results show that the performance of the newly developed wheel is superior to the conventional alumina wheel and comparable to the Sol-gel wheel. An experimental investigation on the wear of alumina grinding wheel was also carried out. The experiments consist of the measurements of fracture strength of the abrasive grains, grinding force, and the area of wear flats of grinding wheels. Microscopic examination of abrasive grains was executed to observe the progress of wheel wear. The results indicate that the 32A grain, which has relatively lower fracture strength, wears out faster than 5SS and 5SG. The wheel wear occurs much faster in wet grinding than in dry grinding. It has also been found that the grinding forces increase logarithmically with increasing wear flats.

  • A crack-free ceramic composite membrane with micropores has been synthesized by the pressurized sol-gel coating technique using the mixed Al2O3-SiO2 sols. The mixed sols were prepared by mixing nanoparticulate SiO2 and boehmite sols. These sols were more stable at lower pH, but very unstable when their copositions were in the range of 50~75mol% of SiO2 at the same pH. The mixed Al2O3-SiO2 membrane prepared from the mixed sol (0.2mol/$\ell$ of solid content and pH=2) containing 40mol% of SiO2 had the mean pore radius of 0.80nm and the specific surface area of 280$m^2$/g. The nitrogen permeability through the coated Al2O3-SiO2 layer was 42$\times$107mol/$m^2$.s.Pa. It was found that the thermal stability of aluminosilicate membranes, even through similar to that of SiO2 membranes, was much improved in comparison with ${\gamma}$-alumina membranes.

  • Aluminum alkoxide, $Al(OC_3H_7\^i)_3\;and\;Al(OC_4H_9^s)_3$, were synthesized using aluminum sheet and corresponding alcohols to prepare various phase alumina in high purity. Aluminum hydroxides were prepared by hydrolysis of synthesized Al-alkoxides and from reagent $AlCl_3$. The catalytic properties of ${\gamma}$ and ${\eta}-Al_2O_3$ prepared at various temperatures were investigated and the reaction kinetics of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ formation from $Al(OH)_3$ was considered.
