  • In present study, an alternative process for manufacturing ultra marine blue by using kaolin, sulfur, sodium carbonate, silica, and rosin was investigated. From the experiments, it was found in the reductive calcination process that the temperature variation with the bed height of input materials is relatively high due to the inadequate thermal conductivity of them. It was also found that the color of the ultramarine blue manufactured is sensitive for the shape of the input materials and the calcinations conditions, and specially the heating rate is very important to form ultramarine. For manufacturing green ultramarine by using sulfur, sodium carbonate, silicon, and pine resin, an optimum condition was investigated to be the heating rate region below $0.6^{\circ}C/min$, the reaction temperature of $850^{\circ}C$ and the reaction time of 4 hr. At the oxidative calcination process to manufacture ultra marine blue from green ultramarine, the optimum flow rate of air is $500{\sim}550\;{\ell}/kg$ (green ultramarine) and the reaction temperature is $500{\sim}550^{\circ}C$.

  • With the advantage of a rapid exothermic reaction property, jet set concrete may be used as a cold weather concrete because it can reach the required strength before being damaged by cold weathers. And it can be hardened more quickly if the field temperature is properly compensated by heating. Because ordinary concrete cannot be hardened well under sub-zero temperatures, anti-freeze agents are typically added to prevent the frost damage and to ensure the proper hardening of concrete. While the addition of a large amount of anti-freeze agent is effective to prevent concrete from freezing and accelerates cement hydration resulting in shortening the setting time and enhancing the initial strength, it induces problems in long-term strength growth. Also, it is not economically feasible because most anti-freeze agents are mainly composed of chlorides. Recent studies reported that magnesia-phosphate composites can be hardened very quickly and hydrated even in low temperatures, which can be used as an alternative of cold weather concrete for cold weathers and very cold places. As a preliminary study, to obtain the material properties, mortar specimens with different mixture proportions of magnesia-phosphate composites were manufactured and series of experiments were conducted varying the curing temperature. From the experimental results, an appropriate mixture design for cold weathers and very cold places is suggested.

  • Molten carbonate oxidation (MCO) is one of the promising alternative technologies for the treatment of the chlorinated organic compounds because it is capable of trapping chlorine during a destruction of them. In this study, destructions of chlorinated organic compounds ($C_6H_5Cl$, $C_2HCl_3$ and $CCl_4$) and an insulated oil containing PCBs were performed by using the two stage molten carbonate oxidation system. MCO reactor temperature largely affected the destruction of the chlorinated organic compounds. Destruction of the chlorinated organics very efficient in the primary MCO reactor however a significant amount of CO was emitted from the MCO system. This CO emission was gradually decreased by an increase in the primary reactor temperature and oxidizing air feed rate. The HCl emission from the MCO system was below 7 ppm regardless of tested conditions. The chlorine collection efficiencies were in the range of 99.95-99.99%. The destruction of PCBs in the insulated oil was efficient at a temperature above $900^{\circ}C$ and overall destruction efficiency of them was determined as over 99.9999%.

  • Postharvest insect pest control is necessary for agricultural industry including domestic consumer markets and exporting products to meet quarantine issue. Especially, the organic or environmentally friendly agricultural products do not fit to the traditional chemical postharvest treatments mostly using methyl bromide. As an alternative, a physical treatment called CATTS (controlled atmosphere and temperature treatment) has been developed to control various insect and mite pests on apple and several stone fruits. This study was designed to determine the CATTS conditions to control the oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta, which is restricted in exporting the infested apples. To apply CATTS on this insect pest, the most heat-tolerant stage was determined. Among the immature stages locating on the fruits, the fifth instar larvae were the most tolerant to $44^{\circ}C$ for 20 min. The ramping rate (the time to increase chamber temperature from $25^{\circ}C$ to $46^{\circ}C$) was positively correlated with the CATTS efficiency under 15% $CO_2$ and 1% $O_2$. After the ramping step, the duration of CATTS was positively correlated with CATTS efficiency. In addition, the CATTS efficiency was highly dependent on the fruit internal temperature at $44^{\circ}C$. From all these parameters, we developed a standard protocol yielding 100% control efficiency of CATTS against apples infested by 4,378 larvae including 2,104 fifth instar individuals.

  • This study aims to investigate the manufacturing process of calcium chloride-based special cement, i.e., CCA (calcium chloro aluminate, C11A7·CaCl2), which uses limestone, by using one type of random industrial by-product, domestic coal ash, cement kiln dust. The manufacturing process of was examined in detail, and the results suggested that the amount of CCA synthesized increased with an increase in the firing temperature. The manufacturing process of CCA was investigated at 1200℃, which was determined as the optimum firing temperature. The results showed that in general, the amount of CCA synthesized tended to increase with an increase in the firing time; however, the clinker melted when the firing time was more than 30 min, thereby suggesting that a firing time of less than 20 min would be suitable for the clinkering process. The optimal firing conditions for manufacturing CCA were obtained as follows: heating rate of 10 ℃/min, firing temperature of 1200 ℃, and holding time of 20 min. The results also suggest that manufacturing CCA will be easier when high chlorine-containing cement kiln dust is used.

  • Feathers are produced in huge quantities as a waste product at commercial poultry processing plants. Since feathers are almost pure keratin protein, feather wastes represent an alternative to more expensive dietary ingredients for animal feedstuffs. Generally they become feather meal used as animal feed after undergoing physical and chemical treatments. These processes require significant energy and also cause environmental pollutions. Therefore, biodegradation of feather by microorganisms represents an alternative method to prevent environment contamination. The aim of this study was to investigate cultural conditions affecting keratinolytic protease production by Bacillus pumilus RS7. We also assessed the nutritive value of microbial and alkaline feather hydrolysates, The composition of optimal medium for the keratinolytic protease was fructose 0.05%, yeast extract 0.3%, NaCl 0.05%, K2HPO4 0.03%, KH2PO4 0.04% and MgCl2 6H2O 0.01%, respectively. The optimal temperature and initial pH was $30^{\circ}C$ and 9.0, respectively. The keratinolytic protease production under optimal condition reached a maximum after 18 h of cultivation. Total amino acid content of feather hydrolysates treated by NaOH and B. pumilius RS7 was $113.8\;{\mu}g/ml$ and $504.9\;{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. Essential amino acid content of feather hydrolysates treated by NaOH and B. pumilius RS7 was $47.2\;{\mu}g/ml$ and $334.0\;{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. Thus, feather hydrolysates have the potential for utilization as an ingredient in animal feed.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a new preparation process of ginseng extract using high concentrations of ginsenoside $Rg_3$, a special component in red ginseng. From when the ginseng saponin glycosides transformed into the prosapogenins chemically, they were analyzed using the HPLC method. The ginseng and ginseng extract were processed with several treatment conditions of an edible brewing vinegar. The results indicated that ginsenoside $Rg_3$ quantities increased over 4% at the pH 2-4 level of vinegar treatment. This occurred at temperatures above $R90^{\circ}C$, but not occurred at other pH and temperature condition. In addition, the ginseng and ginseng extract were processed with the twice-brewed vinegar (about 14% acidity). This produced about 1.5 times more ginsenoside $Rg_3$ than those processed with regular amounts of brewing vinegar (about 7% acidity) and persimmon vinegar (about 3% acidity). Though the white ginseng extract was processed with the brewing vinegar over four hr, there was no change for ginsenoside $Rg_3$. However, the VG8-7 was the highest amount of ginsenoside $Rg_3$ (4.71%) in the white ginseng extract, which was processed with the twice-brewed vinegar for nine hr. These results indicate that ginseng treated with vinegar had 10 times the quantity of ginsenoside $Rg_3$, compared to the amount of ginsenoside $Rg_3$ in the generally commercial red ginseng, while ginsenoside $Rg_3$ was not found in raw and white ginseng.

  • Dimethyl ether (DME) is a new clean fuel as an environmentally-benign energy resource. DME can be manufactured from various energy sources including natural gas, coal, biomass and spent plastic. In addition to its environmentally friendly properties, DME has similar characteristics to those of LPG. Therefore, it is considered as an excellent substitute fuel for LPG, fuel cells, power plant, and especially diesel and is expected to be the alternative fuel by 2010. The experimental study of the direct synthesis of DME was investigated under various conditions over a temperature range of $220{\sim}280^{\circ}C$, syngas ratio 1.2~3.0. All experiments were carried out with a hybrid catalyst, composed of a methanol synthesis catalyst ($Cu/ZnO/Al_2O_3$) and a dehydration catalyst (${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$). The observed reaction rate follows qualitatively a Langmiur-Hinshellwood model as the reaction mechanism. Such a mechanism is considered with three reactions; methanol synthesis, methanol dehydration and water gas shift reaction. From a surface reaction with dissociative adsorption of hydrogen, methanol, and water, individual reaction rate was determined.
