  • Excessive emission of greenhouse gases from fossil fuels usage has become a major cause of climate change. As an alternative to reduce the greenhouse gas emission, renewable energy has been highlighted around the world and UK government also established the Climate Change Act 2008 and policies for response the climate change. Those of them has been supporting many practical actions for reducing greenhouse gas emission and community energy projects is representative program to supporting security of energy supply and helping the country to reduce its carbon footprint. Rural Community Energy Fund (RCEF) which is one of community energy projects supports rural communities to develop renewable energy projects which provide economic and social benefits to the community. The review of UK's renewable energy policies and action plan can be useful to promote in Korea policies for becoming low-carbon society.

  • As one of the phil-environmental alternative plan of Saemankeum project, gradual development is recommended. The procedure of the Saemankeum project start with the completion of 32 km long sea-dikes which contains two discharge gates until the year 2004. Second step is pre-development of Mangyoung area permitting temporary intrusion of sea water, i.e. tides, by the opening of discharge gate until the environmental evaluation on the water quality of this area secures permanent meet to government's water quality standard. Therefore this study is to predict the future condition of this tidal flat with the point of view tidal environments, salt, water quality, soil mechanics, etc. of Mangyoung area when the sea water still passed in the inland reservoir through the discharge gate.

  • This paper compares and evaluates the performances of the two types of mathematical programming models for solving the machine-part cell formation problem in group technology manufacturing : indirect formulation relying on surrogate measure such as similarity coefficient and direct formulation seeking to minimize the number of exceptional elements. New indirect formulation, called the generalized p-median model. is proposed. Unlike existing p-median formulations, proposed formulation includes the classical cell formation problem in which only one process plan exsits for each part as a special case. The proposed new formulation can also deal with the cell formation problem in which alternative process plans exist for a part. The indirect formulation is compared with a new direct formulation which needs much fewer extra variables and constraints than existing direct formulations. Some significant findings from comparative experiment are discussed.

  • The functional behaviors of human standing postural control were investigated when they were exposed to long-term horizontal vibration in the sagittal plane. For complexity of human postural control, a useful alternative method that has been based on a black-box approach was taken; that is, where the feedback mechanism was lumped into a single element. A motor-driven support platform was designed as a source of vibration. The AC Servo-controlled motors produced continuous anterior/posterior (AP) motion. The data were analyzed both in the time and frequency domain. The cross-correlation and coherency functions were estimated. Subjects behaved as a non-rigid pendulum with a mass and a spring throughout the whole period of the platform motion, as consistent with the plan chosen for this study.

  • Jeju Topdong is a seashore but there are no relations to the waterfront. Since Topdong was developed and reclaimed by the capitalistic system so that topdong have a lot of problems as a waterfront. First of all, Topdong has no water-familiar as a waterfront that is because of high level concrete breakwater. And also Topdong has no identity in seashore buildings which are composed by fish restaurants, seashore theater, shops, hotels and otherwise buildings. From the above critical mind, in this study look to process of reclamation of Topdong and examine the current situations and problems. To recover water-familiar of Topdong, this study examine the case study on abroad waterfront cases and refer to these abroad cases for establishing desirable waterfront model of Topdong. From the analysis, this study propose the waterfront elements and schematic alternative plan for Jeju Topdong in order to recover the water-familiar as a waterfront and a seashore.

  • This study establishes management plan for water quantity and quality using PCSWMM and alternative evaluation index (AEI). PCSWMM can consider combined sewer overflows (CSOs) and simulate not only the flowrate but aslo the pollutant of BOD, SS, TN and TP for the effectiveness analysis of alternatives. Indicators of AEI are selected using sustainability evaluation concept, driver-pressure-state-impact-response (DPSIR) model and calculated by weighted summation method. These were applied for the Mokgancheon watershed which has many combined sewers. This result will be effective to the integrated watershed management for sustainability.

  • A hydraulic scale model test with movable bed was performed to obtain design data for groins to protect the coast in front of the Sang-ri seadike in Sukmodo, located in the Han-river estuary area. The vertical scale of the model is 1/100 and the horizontal scale 1/250 according to Froude similitude. The result of test for original coast and groins showed that the coast in front of the Sang-ri seadike was eroded by tidal current. Three alternatives for the planning of new groins were tested. It is concluded that the alternative B-3 test scheme was the best plan to protect the coast among others.

  • Although first generation total ankle replacement (TAR) had high failure rates, recent investigations have reported good results of the newer generations of TAR due to advances in implant designs and techniques. Patient selection is critical to performing TAR to obtain promising outcomes and to decrease complication rate. As the current concepts of correcting the accompanying deformity have been established, TAR in moderate to severe varus deformity of the ankle result in favorable outcomes and indications for TAR are expanding. Correction of deformity and hindfoot fusion should be performed in conjunction with TAR if needed. If radiolucency around components or osteolysis is progressive during follow-up, CT should be carried out as a confirmative diagnostic method. TAR is an effective treatment modality alternative to ankle fusion. However, we should recognize that TAR is a demanding procedure, which requires accurate techniques, enough experience, and preoperative plan for a concomitant deformity.

  • This essay was written with the purpose of finding an effective outline of reorganizing the theoretical establishments of institutional household management. We have proposed a few alternative models for the reorganization of the theoretical system of institutional household management after analyzing the theoretical systems of Management and Administration: First, institutional household management should embrace the concepts of positive management. Second, we should organize a plan where such factors as organization system, human resource development, advertisement and consumer satisfaction surveys could be introduced and strengthened within the theoretical system of institutional household management.
