Effect of Si metal powders addition with the plasma transferred arc(PTA) overlaying process on characteristics of the alloyed layer in aluminum alloy(A5083) has been investigated. The overlaying conditions were 175-250A in plasma arc current, 500mm/min in travel speed, the 5-20g/min in powder feeding rate. Main results obtained are summarized as follows. 1)Sufficient size of molten pool on surface of base metal was required for forming an alloyed layer; in a fixed travel, the formation of alloyed layer with clear and beautiful surface depend upon the plasma arc current and powder feeding rate; the greater plasma arc current and the smaller powder feeding rate were, the better bead was formed. Optimum alloyed conditions by which an excellent alloyed bead obtained was 225A in plasma arc current. PTA process made it possible to form an alloyed layer with up to 67wt% Si. 2)Microstructure in the alloyed layer was in accord with prediction from the Al-Si phase diagram 3)The hardness of the alloyed layer increased in proportion to Si content. 4)As volume fraction of primary Si increased, the specific wearness of the alloyed layer was significantly improved. However, no further improvement was found when the volume fraction was greater than about 30%. 5)Utilizing the PTA process, a crack free alloyed layer with maximum hardness of about Hv 310 could be obtained.
The formation of a thicker hard alloyed layer have been investigated on the surface of aluminum cast alloy (AC2B) by PTA overlaying process with Cr, Cu and Ni motel powders under the condition of overlaying current 125-200A. overlaying speed 150 mm/min and different powder feeding rate 5-20 g/min. In addition the characteristics of hardening and wear resistance of alloyed layer here been examined in relation to the microstructure of alloyed layer. Main results obtained were summarized as follows: 1) There was an optimum overlaying condition to get a good alloyed layer with smooth surface. This good layer became easy to be formed as increasing overlaying current and decreasing powder feeding rate under a constant overlaying speed. 2) Cu powder was the most superior one in metal powders used due to a wide optimum overlaying condition range, uniform hardness distribution of Hv250-350, good oar resistance and freedom from cracking in alloyed layer with fine hyper-eutectic structure. 3) On the contrary, irregular hardness distribution was usually obtained in Cr ar Ni alloyed layers of which hardness was increased as Cr or Ni contents and reached to maximum hardness of about Hv400-850 at about 60wt%cr or 40wt%Ni in alloyed layer. 4) Cracking occurred in Cr or Ni alloyed layers with higher hardness than Hv250-300 at mere than 20-25wt% of Cr or Ni contents in alloyed layer. Porosity was observed in all alloyed layers but decreased by usage of spherical powder with smooth surface.
The formation of thick alloyed layer with high Si content have been investigated on the surface of Al alloy (A5083) plate by PTA process with Si powder. Hardening characteristics and wear resistance of alloyed layer was examined in relation to the microstructure of alloyed layer. Thick hardened layer in mm-order thickness on the surface of A5083 plate can be formed by PTA process with wide range of process condition by using Si powder as alloying element because of eutectic reaction of Al-Si binary alloy. High temperature and rapid solidification rate of molten pool, which are features of PTA process, enable the formation of high Si content alloyed layer with uniform distribution of fine primary Si paticle. High plasma arc current was beneficial to make the alloyed layer with smooth surface appearance in wide range of powder feeding rate, because enough volume of molten pool was necessary make alloyed layer. Uniform dispersion of fine primary Si particle with about 30${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in particle size can be obtained in layer with Si content ranging from 30 to 50 mass %. Hardness of alloyed layer increased with increasing Si content, but increasing rate of hardness differed with macrostructure of alloyed layer. Wear resistance of alloyed layer depended on $V_{si}$(volume fraction of primary Si) and was remarkably improved to two times of base metal at 20-30% $V_{si}$ without cracking, but no more improvement was obtained at larger $V_{si}$.
The thick and hard alloyed layer was formed on the surface of Aluminum Cast Alloy(AC2B) by PTA overlaying process with Cr, Cu and Ni metal powders under the condition of overlaying current 150A, overlaying speed 150mm/min and different powder feeding rate 5-20g/min. The characteristics of hardening and were resistance of alloyed layer have been investigated in relation to microstructure of alloyed layer. As a result, it was made clear that Cu powder was the most superier one in three metal powders used due to an uniform hardness distribution of Hv 250-350, good wear resistance and freedom from cracking in alloyed layer of which microstructure consisted of hypereutectic. On the contrary, irregular hardness distribution was usually obtained in Cr or Ni alloyed layers of which hardness was increased as Cr or Ni contents and reached to maximum hardness of about Hv 400-850 at about 60wt% Cr or 40wt% Ni in alloyed layer. However the cracking occurred in these alloyed layers with higher hardness than Hv 250-300 at more than 20-25wt% of Cr or Ni contents in alloyed layer. Wear rate of alloyed layer was decreased to 1/10 in Cu alloyed layer and 1/5 or 1/3 in Cr or Ni alloyed layer with same hardness of about Hv 300 in comparison with that of base metal at higher sliding speed.
Effect of Cr, Cu and Ni metal powders addition on the alloyed layer of aluminum alloy (AC2B) has been investigated with the plasma transferred arc (PTA) overlaying process. The overlaying conditions were 125-200A in plasma arc current, 150mm/min in process speed and 5-20g/min in powder feeding rate. Main results obtained are summarized as follows: 1) It was made clear that formation of thick surface alloyed layer on aluminum alloy is possible by PTA overlaying process. 2) The range of optimum alloying conditions were much wider in case of Cu and Ni powder additions than the case of Cr powder addition judging from the surface appearance and the bead macrostructure. 3) Alloyed layer with Cu showed almost the homogeneous microstructure through the whole layer by eutectic reaction. alloyed layers with Cr and Ni showed needle-like and agglomerated microstructures, the structure of which has compound layer in upper zone of bead by peritectic and eutectic-peritectic reactions, respectively. 4) Microconstituents of the alloyed layer were analyzed as A1+CrA $l_{7}$ eutectics, C $r_{2}$al sub 11/, CrA $l_{4}$, C $r_{4}$A $l_{9}$ and C $r_{5}$A $l_{*}$ 8/ for Cr addition, Al+CuA $l_{2}$(.theta.) eutectics and .theta. for Cu addition, and Al+NiA $l_{3}$ eutectics. NiA $l_{3}$, N $i_{2}$A $l_{3}$ and NiAl for Ni addition. 5) Concerning defect of the alloyed layer, many blow holes were seen in Cr and Ni additions although there was lesser in Cu addition. Residual gas contents in blow hole for Cu and Ni alloyed layer were confirmed as mainly $H_{2}$ and a littie of $N_{2}$ Cracking was observed in compound zone of the alloyed layer in case of Cr and Ni addition but not in Cu alloyed layer.r.r.
In this study, effect of temperature and time on melt-out of 25wt% Al-alloyed ductile iron has been investigated. The oxidation tests were carried out in a tube furnace at $800^\circC$, $930^\circC$, and $1000^\circC$ for lh, 5h, 10h, 50h. The microstructure, microhardness, and $Al_2O_3$ layer of oxidation-treated 25wt% Al-alloyed ductile iron samples (10 x 10 x 10 mm) were investigated. Phase identification was performed by X-ray diffraction(XRD) and EDS. The oxidation-treated 25wt% Al-alloyed ductile iron samples at $930^\circC$ for lh, 5h, 10h and KS GCD 500 were used for melt-out test in an Al alloy melt. The melt-out test results showed that oxidation tested sample at $930^\circC$ for 5h which on the whole forms $2-3\mum$$Al_2O_3$ layer showed lowest melt-out depth. It was observed showed that appropriate Al203 layer can affect melt-out behaviors.
This study includes a basic feature of laser surface alloying for enhancing the surface properties of materials. Effects of laser processing parameters such as beam power, beam size, scanning speed on the shape and composition of alloyed layer was simulated in case of moving beam conditions (2-dimensional numerical methods). Simulated results were compared with experiments, in which the plasma coating of 80% Ni + 20% Cr deposited on the SS41 substrate was remelted with CO2 laser with Gaussian energy distribution. Simulation and experiments revealed that the shape (dimension)and composition of laser alloyed layer were strongly dependent upon the process parameters, especially interaction time (travel speed) as compared to beam diameter, beam power and absorptivity. The shape and composition of alloyed layervaried more or less exponentially with parameters.
The present study was aimed to correlate the microstructure and the hardness as well as the wear resistance of the metal-ceramic particulated composite layer on the pure Al plate. The composite layers were constructed by the addition of TiC particles on the surface of Al-Cu alloyed layers by PTA overlaying process. Initially, the Al-Cu alloyed layers were achieved by the deposition of Al-(25 ~ 48%) Cu alloys on the pure Al plate by TIG process. It was revealed that TiC particles were uniformly dispersed without any reaction with matrix in the composite layer. The volume fraction of TiC particles (TiC V F) increased from 12% to 55% with increasing the number of pass of composite layer. Hardnesses of (Al-48%Cu + TiC (3&4layers)) composite layer were Hv450 and Hv560, respectively, due to the increase of TiC V/F. Hardnesses of (Al-Cu + TiC) composite layers decreased gradually with insreasing temperature from 100$^{\circ}$C to 400$^{\circ}$C, and hardnesses at 400$^{\circ}$C were then reached to 1/5 - 1/10 of room temperature hardness depending on the construction of composite layers. The Specific wear of (Al + Tic) layer and Al-48%Cu alloyed layer decreased to 1/10 of the of pure Al, while the specific wear of (Al-48%Cu + TiC (4 layers)) composite layer exhibited 1/15 of that of steel such as SS400 and STS304.
For a development purpose of thick metal / metal Graded-Boundary Materials(GBM), a basic research on the fabrication of Ni-Cr/steel GBM was carried out by a laser beam and its mechanical properties and thermal characteristics were investigated. In order to produce a compositionally graded boundary region between substrate steel and added Ni-Cr alloy, a series of surface alloying treatments was performed with a high power CO$_2$ laser beam. Ni-Cr sheet was placed on a low carbon steel plate(0.18%C), and then a CO$_2$ laser beam was irradiated on the surface to produce a homogeneous alloyed layer. On this first surface-alloyed layer, another Ni-Cr sheet was placed and then the CO$_2$ laser beam was irradiated again to produce second surface-alloyed layer. Sequential repetitions of laser surface alloying treatment 4 times resulted in a graded-boundary region with the thickness of about 1.4mm. Simultaneous concentration profiles of different kinds of alloying elements(Ni and Cr) showed from 42%Ni, 45%Cr and 13%Fe on surface region to 0%Ni, 0%Cr and 99%Fe in substrate region. Also a thermal conductivity gradient resulted in graded-region and its value changed from 0.03㎈/cm s$\^{C}$ in surface region to 0.1㎈/cm s$\^{C}$ in substrate region. Microstructural observation showed that any visible root porosities and solidification shrinkage cracks were not formed in graded region between alloyed layer and substrate region during rapid cooling.
Surface alloying using TiC, $TiB_2$ and VC ceramic particles on carbon steel has been performed using high voltage electron beam. Each type of ceramic particles was mixed with flux of Al and $MgF_2$ in 1 to 4 ratio. The microstructures of the surface alloyed layers consisted of melted region, interface region. heat affected region and the unaffected matrix. The surface layer of the TiC surface alloyed had a cubed primary and a eutectic type of TiC. $TiB_2$ in surface layer of $TiB_2$ surface alloyed were incompletely melted with$ TiB_2$ particles as observed before the alloying. On the surface layer of the VC surface alloyed, very well defined cell structure was observed with VC on the cell boundary. In addition, ~50 nm in diameter VC particles in high density were ubiquitous in the matrix. Those fine VC particles prominently improved the hardness and wear resistance of the surface layer of the VC surface alloyed.
