  • Optical interferometry and polarimetry have separately provided new insights into stellar astronomy, especially in the fields of fundamental parameters and atmospheric models. We present: scientific justifications for "full-Stokes" optical interferometric polarimetry (OIP); updated instrument requirements; preliminary beam combiner designs; polarimeter design; end-to-end OIP data reduction; and realistic reimaged full-Stokes models of Be stars with a suitable number of telescopes plus noise sources. All of this work represents preliminary research to construct an OIP beam combiner.

  • We demonstrate an optical gate architecture using a single SOA to perform AND, OR and NOT logic functions. Simple reconfigurable all-optical logic operations are implemented using RZ modulated signals at 40 Gb/s. Contrast ratio and extinction ratio values have been analysed for the different types of logic gates. Maximum extinction ratio and contrast ratio achieved are 19dB and 17.2 dB respectively. Simple structure and potential for integration makes this architecture an interesting approach in photonic computing and optical signal processing.

  • We show that the minimum EOP (eye-opening penalty) obtained by tunable dispersion compensation is a function of a figure of merit for a nonlinear process, $I_0L_{eff}$, where $I_0$ is the optical intensity and $L_{eff}$ is the effective length of the interaction region. Using this rule, we do not need to conduct nonlinear simulations in all the cases of signal power and transmission length to obtain the signal distortion in dispersion-managed optical transmission. Instead, we need to conduct a simulation in only one case of a signal power and find the functional relation, and then we can obtain the values of the signal distortion in other cases using the discovered functional relation. This technique can reduce the number of nonlinear simulations to less than 10%.

  • The various techniques to compensate for the signal distortion due to the group velocity dispersion (GVD) and nonlinear Kerr effects of optical fibers in the optical links have been proposed in the literature. We propose a flexible dispersion-managed link configuration consisted of single-mode and dispersion-compensating fibers with irregular dispersion coefficients over all fiber spans, and an optical phase conjugator added midway along the optical links. By distributing the lengths of the single mode fibers, we achieve a flexible optical link. The simultaneous ascending and descending distribution of the single-mode fiber lengths before and after the optical phase conjugator, respectively, best compensates the distorted wavelength division multiplexed signals in the optical link with non-fixed coefficients. Our result is consistent with those of our previous work on fixed coefficients. Therefore, to improve the compensation at any magnitude of dispersion coefficient, we must artificially distribute the lengths of the single-mode fibers into a dispersion-managed link.

  • We propose the use of synchronously moving micro-optics (lenslet arrays) for image pickup and display in three-dimensional integral imaging to overcome the upper resolution limit imposed by the Nyquist sampling theorem. With the proposed technique, we present an all-optical three-dimensional integral imaging projector. An optically addressed spatial light modulator is used, which potentially provides better image resolution than the conventional CCD and liquid crystal display pair. We present experimental results using a liquid crystal light valve.

• In a switch routing system, buffers are indispensible to prevent signal collision during routing process. For a photonic switching system, optical buffers are also indispensible if the system requires an active routing rather than a simple optical cross-connect(OXC). To cope with WDM technologies in optical comminication systems in these days, photonic switching system also has to deal with WDM signals. Therefore, optical buffers needed in a switching system has to be routed to the same output. For the receiver to recognize these signals separately, parallel WDM signals during rearrangement process. In this paper, we propose a novel all optical WDM output buffer whose structure, hardware, SNR and BER characteristics are improved a lot comparing with those of previously reported ones. From the analysis of the proposed buffer, the new buffer can hold 255 WDM cells keeping BER of 10-9 as long as a contrast ratio(gain on-off ratio) of optical gate(semiconductor optical amplifier) nside the buffer is 30dB.

  • Background/Aims: Narrow Band Imaging (NBI) International Colorectal Endoscopic (NICE) and Workgroup Serrated Polyps and Polyposis (WASP) classifications were developed for optical diagnosis of neoplastic and sessile serrated polyps, respectively. Near-focus NBI with NICE combined with WASP criteria for optical diagnosis of colonic polyps has not yet been evaluated. We aimed to compare the accuracy of near-focus NBI (group A) with normal-focus NBI (group B) in real-time optical diagnosis of colorectal polyps using combined NICE and WASP criteria. Methods: Among 362 patients, 118 with 227 polyps were recruited. Groups A and B included 62 patients with 130 polyps (three lost polyps) and 56 patients with 106 polyps (six lost polyps), respectively. Optical diagnoses were compared with pathological reports. Results: The accuracy of optical diagnosis of neoplastic polyps in groups A and B was not significantly different (76% vs. 71%, p=0.52). WASP criteria provided all false positive diagnoses of sessile polyps as serrated polyps in 31 (16.2%) patients. Conclusions: Near-focus NBI was not superior to normal-focus NBI in optical diagnostics of neoplastic polyps using NICE criteria. In our study, WASP classification yielded all false positives in the diagnosis of sessile serrated adenomas/polyps. Routine real-life optical diagnosis of polyps is still unadvisable.
