Scouring Effect of PAPE(Polyoxyethylene Alkyl Phosphoric Ester) on Cotton Fibres (면섬유에 대한 폴리옥시에틸렌 알킬 인산에스테르의 정련효과)

  • This study was concerned with the scouring effect of anionic surfactants, PAPE(sodium polyoxyethylene alkyl phosphoric ester) for cotton fibres. Sodium polyoxyethylene(7) nonylphenyl phosphoric ester(CPB-1) and the sodium polyoxyethylene(7) tridecyl phosphoric ester(CPB-2) were synthesized by the phosphoric esterification reaction from NP-7(polyoxyethylene(7) nonylphenyl ether) and TDA-7(polyoxyethylene(7) tridecyl ether) as scouring agents. Defoaming ability, fibre wetting time and absorbency rate of scouring agents were investigated. Being compared with the conventional scouring agent(Ultravon GP; Ciba-guyge Co.), CPB-1 and CPB-2 showed a higher defoaming ability in the cotton scouring process at room temperature. And CPB-1 has a higher wetting effect than the agents, CPB-2 or GP in distilled water bath but CPB-2 showed more scouring effect in 1.2 wt % NaOH solution bath.

  • 2,5-Disubstituted tetrahydrofurans 11-13 were prepared by phenylselenoetherification of 1-alkyl-4-phenyl-(3E)-butenols 8-10 under kinetic conditions. Their stereochemical outcome and reactivity were controlled by solvent, reaction temperature and the alkyl substituent. While the cyclization was stereorandom in dichloromethane, its stereoinduction was moderate to good in propionitrile and good to excellent in diethyl ether. The reaction went to completion in dichloromethane and propionitrile, but it did not in diethyl ether. The results can be rationalized by the degree of reversibility in the formation of episelenonium cation and 1,3-diaxial interactions in the transition state of the formation of tetrahydrofuranonium cation.

  • The core-shell latex particles were prepared by sequential emulsion polymerization using alkyl methacrylate as a shell monomer and potassium persulfate (KPS) as an initiator. We study the effects of core-shell structure of calcium carbonate/alkyl methacrlyate in the presence of an anionic surfactant sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and polyoxyethylene alkyl ether sulfate (EU-S133D)). The structure of core-shell polymer were investigated by measuring to the thermal decomposition of polymer composite using thermogravimetric analyzer and morphology of latex by transmission electron microscope (TEM).

Efficient Cleavage of Alkyl Aryl Ethers Using an Ionic Liquid under Microwave Irradiation

  • A highly reliable dealkylation protocol of alkyl aryl ethers, whose alkyl groups are longer than methyl group, has been developed. We report that various ethyl, n-propyl, and benzyl aryl ethers are successfully cleaved using an ionic liquid, 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide, [bmim][Br], under microwave irradiation. Despite many characteristics such as lower cost and less toxicity of the alkylating agents, and greater hydrophobicity of the products, longer alkyl ethers have been significantly less exploited than methyl ethers, probably due to more difficulty in the deprotection step. Since it has the same advantages as the demethylation method developed by this group including mild conditions, short reaction time, and small use of the ionic liquids, the dealkylation protocol can greatly encourage the broader use of longer alkyl groups in the protection of phenolic groups. As with our previous study of demethylation using [bmim][Br], the microwave irradiation is crucial for the deprotection of longer alkyl aryl ethers. Unlike the conventional heating, which causes either low conversion or decomposition, the microwave irradiation seems to more effectively provide energy to cleave the ether bonds and therefore suppresses the undesired reactions.

  • Four novel amphoteric surfactants of N-alkoxyethylcarboxybetaine series were synthesized via Schotten-Baurnman reaction between four alkyl chlorides contaning 10, 12, 14 and 16 carbon atoms in their N-alkyl group and dimethylaminoethanol to give the intermediate products, alkoxyethyldimethylamine, Quaternization of these intermediates was permitted to form 2-(alkoxyethyldimethylarnmonio) acetates, whose structures were identified by elemental analysis. IR spectrophotometry and $^1$Hnmr spectrometry. The yield of the final products was shown in the range of $74{\sim}77%$ based on the yield of the intermediate products, Surface tension of the aqueous solution of the final products was measured. and the critical micelle concentrations(cmc) were shown in the range of $2.82{\times}10^{-3}{\sim}2.67{\times}10^{-6}$mol/l, and the surface thension at erne was 35${\sim}$43dyne/cm. Cmc was lowered gradually by the increase of carbon numbers in N-alkyl ether containing group. The isoelectric point was shown in the range of 4.08${\sim}$6.03. It showed a tendency to lean toward the acidic site and its range was broadened as increase of the hydrophobic group length. A linear relationship between log erne and the number of carbon atoms(N) in the hydrophobic alkyl chain was shown in the relative equation of log cmc=2.49-0.50N.

  • The phase diagram for the surfactant mixture system of N-dodecanocyl-N-methyl amido polyolcarboxyl alkyl ether(DGC)/N-dodecanocyl-N-alkyl glucamine(DG)/water was studied usingpolarized microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) and rheological measurements respectively. Using polarized microscopy, the textures of liquid crystal phases obtained at various surfactantconcentrations were investigated as a function of surfactant concentration and temperature, and phasetransitions between anisotropic liquid crystal phases and isotropic liquid phase were examined usingDSC measurements. Viscoelastic properties of surfactant solutions determined between hexagonal andlamellar liquid crystal phase by rheological measurements were approximately consistent with the resultsobtained by polarized microscopy and DSC. In the study for the phase of DGC/DG(5:5 mol ratio)/water system. It could be found that the hexagonal liquid crystal phase appeared at 25${\sim}$60wt% ofsurfactant, the cubic liquid crystal phase at 50${\sim}$65wt% and the lamellar crystal phase at above 70wt%.

A Study on Alkyl Glucoside Synthesis by Amphiphilic Phase Enzyme Reaction (양친매상 효소반응에 의한 알킬글루코시드의 합성연구)

  • An amphiphilic phase enzyme reaction was used to synthesize alkyl glucosides from glucose and alkyl alcohol with immobilized ${\beta}$-glucosidase using four glycol ether cosolvents(monoglyme, diglyme, 2-methoxyethanol, and 1,4-dioxane). Monoglyme was shown to be the best cosolvent for the amphiphilic phase medium composed of water/cosolvent/alkyl alcohol admixture. To obtain high yield of alkyl glucoside by amphiphilic phase enzyme reaction, hydrophilicity-hydrophobicity of amphiphilic media and enzyme microenvironment was optimized from the viewpoints of substrate solubility, enzyme activity, water activity, and dynamic equilibrium between glucose alcoholysis and glucoside hydrolysis. Under optimum reaction conditions, the highest concentrations of hexyl, octyl, decyl, and dodecyl glucosides were 18.2, 9.68, 7.27, and 6.03g/L, respectively.

Volatile Organic Compounds contamination in some urban runoff and groundwater samples in Seoul City (서울시 도로변 빗물과 지하수의 VOCs오염)

  • compounds (VOCs) were selected for assessment of VOCs contamination in some urban runoff and groundwater samples in Seoul. They included 3 aromatic hydrocarbons, 13 alkyl benzenes, 1 ether, 26 halogenated alkanes, 10 halogenated alkenes, and 9 halogenated aromatics. The levels of VOCs in urban runoff and groundwater were measured for samples collected in March 2000, June 2000 and November 2000 in Seoul City. A total of 78 samples (44 run-off water, 27 groundwater, and 7 samples from 4 urban wastewater treatment plants in Seoul) were collected and analysed by GC-MS with purge and trap. After examination of the runoff, it was concluded that alkyl benzenes and aromatic hydrocarbons were organic compounds which were significantly impacted by traffic flows in Seoul. Of 62 VOCs, only 11 VOCs were not detected in runoff samples, while 14 VOCs were detected in 27 groundwater samples. The toluene content in the runoff was extremely variable from 0.1ppb to 29,310ppb, depending on the different sampling sites. The concentrations of xylene ranged between 0.07ppb and 2970ppb in the runoff. The concentrations ranged from 0.05ppb to 33.0ppb for benzene, 0.05ppb to 960ppb for ethylbenzene, 0.08ppb to 20ppb for trichloromethane (chloroform) , 0.03ppb to 4.30ppb for trichloroethylene(TCE) and 0.1ppb to 50ppb for 1,1,2-trichloroethane. From the preliminary study of groundwater from some wells in Seoul, the most frequently detected VOCs are djchlorornethane(methylene chloride), trichloromethane(chloroform) and toluene. Most of aromatic hydrocarbons, alkyl benzenes and other solvents generally lower than detection limits.
