Effects of C10- and C12-chain length alkyl analogs of monochamol on attraction of longhorn pine sawyer Monochamus saltuarius (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae)

  • The aggregation pheromone of Monochamus (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) beetles, 2-(undecyloxy) ethanol (hereafter referred to as monochamol), has gained considerable attention because of its usefulness in monitoring and population control of pine sawyer beetles. The hydroxyether structural motif is conserved in pheromones of the subfamily Lamiinae of the Cerambycidae. In this study, we investigated the effects of C10- and C12-chain length alkyl analogs of monochamol, 2-(decyloxy) ethanol and 2-(dodecyloxy) ethanol, on attracting M. saltuairus in Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea. The C10 and C12 analogs attracted M. saltuarius when used in combination with ${\alpha}$-pinene and ethanol, but the responses of these alkyl chain analogs were lower than those of monochamol. Furthermore, the addition of either C10 or C12 analog to the use of monochamol with ${\alpha}$-pinene and ethanol had no effect on attraction of M. saltuarius, indicating high sensitivity of M. saltuarius to monochanol. Taken together, the results of this study suggest that chemical communication within a Monochamus species depends not only on monochamol, but also on other semiochemicals.

  • The 20 thiourea derivatives had been investigated for their cytotoxic activity using MTT assay. Cytotoxic activity was strongly influenced by the substituted alkyl chain length. but not by configuration of Cl and C2. The optimal alkyl chain length for cytotoxicity was C12.   • 본 논문에서는 알킬 사슬 길이에 따른 러빙 처리된 불소화 자기 조립 단분자막(fluorinated self-assembled monolayers; FSAM)의 수직 액정 배향 상태를 보고한다. FSAM의 증착을 위해 간단한 공정인 기체-상 방법이 사용되었다. FSAM의 가시광선 영역대 광학 평균 투과율은 77.63%~78.21%로 75.89%의 투과율을 갖는 기존의 폴리이미드막보다 우수하였다. 또한 프리틸트각 측정과 편광현미경 사진을 통해 FSAM의 우수한 수직 배향 특성을 관찰하였다. 접촉각과 FSAM의 표면에너지 측정을 통해 알킬 사슬 길이에 따른 프리틸트각이 증가하는 것을 확인하였다. FSAM의 높은 광학 투과율과 균일한 수직 배향 특성은 FSAM이 액정 배향막으로서의 가능성을 보여주었다.

Synthesis of Short-Chain Alkyl Butyrate through Esterification Reaction Using Immobilized Rhodococcus Cutinase and Analysis of Substrate Specificity through Molecular Docking

  • Alkyl butyrate with fruity flavor is known as an important additive in the food industry. We synthesized various alkyl butyrates from various fatty alcohol and butyric acid using immobilized Rhodococcus cutinase (Rcut). Esterification reaction was performed in a non-aqueous system including heptane, isooctane, hexane, and cyclohexane. As a result of performing the alkyl butyrate synthesis reaction using alcohols of various chain lengths, it was found that the preference for the alcohol substrate had the following order: C6 > C4 > C8 > C10 > C2. Through molecular docking analysis, it was found that the greater the hydrophobicity of alcohol, the higher the accessibility to the active site of the enzyme. However, since the number of torsions increased as the chain length increased, it became difficult for the hydroxyl oxygen of the alcohol to access the γO of serine at the enzyme active site. These molecular docking results were consistent with substrate preference results of the Rcut enzyme. The Rcut maintained the synthesis efficiency at least for 5 days in isooctane solvent. We synthesized as much as 452 mM butyl butyrate by adding 100 mM substrate daily for 5 days and performing the reaction. These results show that Rcut is an efficient enzyme for producing alkyl butyrate used in the food industry.

Electrochemical Studies of Viologens in Homogeneous Aqueous and Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate Micellar Solutions

  • Cyclic voltammetric behavior of symmetric (dimethyl, diheptyl, dioctyl, dibenzyl) and asymmetric (methyloctyl, methyldodecyl, methylbenzyl) viologens was investigated in homogeneous aqueous solution and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micellar media. In SDS-free 0.1 M NaCl solutions, the reduction potential is less negative as the chain length of alkyl substituent is longer. This is due to the stabilization of the reduced cationic radical and neutral form of viologen by adsorption on electrode surface. The adsorbed species show the "aging-effect". With the exceptions of methyldodecyl viologen and methylbenzyl viologen, the viologens show strong tendency of conproportionation reaction between viologen dications and neutral forms. In cases of methyldodecyl viologen and methylbenzyl viologen, the conproportionation reaction is kinetically disfavored, though it is thermodynamically favorable. SDS micelles dissolve the adsorbed species and the viologens exhibit two reversible redox processes in SDS micellar solutions. The reduction potentials of viologens in SDS micellar solutions depend little on the length of alkyl chain. Benzyl-substituted viologens are more easily reduced than the alkyl substituted viologens, presumably due to electron-withdrawing character of benzyl group.

Nonlinear Optical Zeolite Films for Second and Third Harmonic Generation

  • Methods to prepare novel second-order nonlinear optical (2O-NLO) materials composed of all-silica zeolite (silicalite-1) and a series of 2O-NLO molecules having high second order hyperpolarizability constants (${\beta}$ values) are reviewed. These methods include the development of novel methods to incorporate a series of hemicyanine (HC) molecules into the channels of silicaite-1 films in uniform orientations. The first method is to incorporate HC molecules tethered with long alkyl chains (octadecyl or longer) into the silicalite-1 channels with the long alkyl chain side first through the hydrophobic-hydrophobic interaction between the long alky chains and the silicalite-1 channels. The second method is to incorporate the HC molecule tethered with a medium length alkyl chain (nonyl) into the silicalite-1 channels with the medium length alkyl chain side first through hydrophobic-hydrophobic interaction between the medium length alky chain in the photoexcited state and the silicalite-1 channels. The third method is to incorporate the HC molecule tethered with propionic acid into the silicalite-1 channels with the propionic acid side last mediated by a tetrabultylammonium cation ion-paired to the propionate unit. A method to prepare a novel third-order nonlinear optical (3O-NLO) material composed of zeolite-Y and PbS or PbSe quantum dots is also reviewed. This Account thus describes a promising new direction to which the search for highly sensitive 2O-NLO and 3O-NLO materials has to be conducted and a new direction to which zeolite research and applications have to be expanded.

소수성 파라메터를 적용한 알킬벤젠류의 역상컬럼내의 용출거동 예측 (Prediction of Retention Behavior of Alkyl Benzenes by Hydrophobicity Parameters in Reversed-Phase Column)

  • The retention of solutes in reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography depends on their hydrophobicity. Although the retention behaviors of alkyl benzenes have been reported so far, quite a few authors have mentioned the retention behavior of alkyl benzenes with plural hydrophobicity parameters. In this sense, we were interested in the retention behaviors of alkyl benzenes having benzene moiety and increasing alkyl chain. In this study, we therefore investigated the retention behavior of alkyl benzenes in reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography in order to obtain information concerning the effects of the aromatic moiety and the carbon chain on the retention mechanism by comparing their capacity factor (k') in relation to the carbon chain length. The eluent acetonitrile ($CH_3CN$) showed high selectivity on alkyl benzenes, showing the high difference of capacity factor (${\Delta}log\;k'$) between toluene and octyl benzene. Indeed, the ${\Delta}log\;k'$ of 80% $CH_3CN$ represented 1.42- and 4.25-times longer than 90% MeOH and 60% THF, respectively. The hydrophobicity parameters, van der Waals volume, bond constant, partition constant, $\pi$-energy effect and enthalpy were evaluated with the capacity factor (k') of alkyl benzenes eluted on 80% CH3CN, 90% MeOH and 60% THF, respectively. The best eluent for predicting retention behavior of alkyl benzenes was 90% MeOH ($R^2$ 0.999). The three parameters, van der Waals volume, bond constant and partition constant were well coincident to log k' by increasing alkyl benzenes. However, $\pi$-energy effect and enthalpy were severely disagreeable. Taken together, van der Waals volume, bond constant and partition constant were a reliable parameters to predict the retention behaviors of alkyl benzenes on reversed-phase column.

Impacts of C60-Ionic Liquids (ILs) Interactions and IL Alkyl Chain Length on C60 Dispersion Behavior: Insights at the Molecular Level

  • Mechanisms underlying the impacts of interactions between carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) and ionic liquids (ILs) on the physicochemical behavior of CNPs need to be more full worked out. This manuscript describes a theoretical investigation at multiple levels on the interactions of fullerene $C_{60}$ with 21 imidazolium-based ILs of varying alkyl side chain lengths and anionic types and their impacts on $C_{60}$ dispersion behavior. Results show that ${\pi}$-cation interaction contributed to mechanism of the $C_{60}$-IL interaction more than ${\pi}$-anion interaction. The calculated interaction energy ($E_{INT}$) indicates that $C_{60}$ can form stable complex with each IL molecule. Moreover, the direction of charge transfer occurred from IL to $C_{60}$ during the $C_{60}$-IL interaction. Quantitative models were developed to evaluate the self-diffusion coefficient of $C_{60}$ ($D_{fullerene}$) in bulk ILs. Three interpretative molecular descriptors (heat of formation, $E_{INT}$, and charge) that describe the $C_{60}$-IL interactions and the alkyl side chain length were found to be determinants affecting $D_{fullerene}$.
