This report reviews the literatures on chemical constituents of marine sponges of the genus Spongosorites and also highlights our own research. Specific biological activities of the metabolites from these sponges include: cytotoxic, antitumor, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and other pharmacological activities.

Sedative principles of the seeds of Zizyphus vulgaris var. sphinosus have been characterized as sanjoinine-A (frangufoline), nuciferine and their congeners. Also, heat treatment of sanjoinine-A-produced a more active artifact, sanjoinine-Ahl, which provides a scientific basis for heat-processing (roasting) of this Oriental medicine.

Oxypalmatine and oxypseudopalmatine were synthesized in three steps from the benzonitrile 11 and toluamides 12a, b. The lithiated cycloaddition reaction yielded 3-arylisoquinolinone intermediates. A subsequent internal SN2 reaction produced the corresponding 8-oxoprotoberberines, oxypalmatine and oxypseudopalmatine.

Oxindole dimers have been used as intermediates in the synthesis of various cyclotryptamine alkaloids. An efficient direct synthesis of oxindole dimers has been carried out from 3-substituted oxindoles via an oxidative dimerization using manganese(III) acetate or copper acetate/silver acetate system.

A chemical investigation of the fruits of Piper retrofractum (Piperaceae) has led to the isolation and characterization of a novel piperidine alkaloid, piperoctadecalidine together with three known alkaloids piperine, pipernonaline and guineensine. The structure of the new compound was detemined to be (2E,4E,14Z)-N-(2,4,14-Octadecatrienoyl) piperidine by spectral and synthetic methods.
