  • Mutual interferences of alkali and alkali-earth metals in atomic absorption were examined. For determination of Na or K interfering elements increase the absorbancy, and for Ca or Mg decrease. Since influences of coexisting elements become nearly constant by addition of large amount of same coexisting element, could be use mixed standard solution for alkali or alkali-earth metal determination in the presence of other alkali and alkali-earth metals. The metals can be readily incorporated into scheme of rapid silicate analysis. Precision and accuracy are good.

  • the research has been made for alkali and metal element concentrations in top soils and plants from the abandoned coal mine, Keumsan, Chungnam Province. Samples of the top soil and plant (Miscanthus sinensis and Pinus rigida) were collected from the mine area in which was divided into t재 regions the polluted region influenced by the coal mining and the non-polluted region. pH of the top soils was 3.16-4.33 in the polluted region. Ca, Sr and P concentrations were high in the polluted soils, and Al and Ba concentrations were high in the non-polluted soils. No differences were found in K, Na and Ti concentrations. M. sinensis was higher in the element concentrations than P. rigida. In the average concentration of the alkali and metal element, M. sinensis showed high Cs and Na in the polluted region, and high Ba, Ca, K, Sr and concentrations in the non-polluted region. P. rigida had high Cs, Na and Rb concentrations in the polluted region. M. sinensis and P. rigida were higher in the root than above-ground part in the most element, but Ca and K. Ca, K and Na concentrations within both plants had higher than those of soils.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate on hydration, setting time and compressive strength properties of cement paste mixed alkali-free accelerator using aluminum sulfate for shotcrete. The experimental focus is to variouse added element with alkali-free accelerator for shotcrete using aluminum sulfate. When diethanolamine was used as a component of alkali-free accelerator, alkali-free accelerator contributed to increasing early hydration, setting time and compressive strength properties of cement paste and mortar.

  • The alkali granite occurred as small stock and dyke is distributed in the Kyeomyeongsan Formation in the vicinity of the Chungju city. Geochemical characteristics in major and trace element of alkali granite in the Kyeomyeongsan Formation indicate that the alkali granites are peralkaline and have similar geochemical features to the A-type alkali granite. The rock enriched in HFSE such as Zr, Nb, Y, REE etc. According to the discrimination diagram the alkali granites mostly belong to the within-plate granite field, and to the $A_1$ group of A-type granite. This suggests that they might be emplaced in a extentional rift environment. The alkali granites are characterized by remarkably high total REE content, and enriched, relatively flat to somewhat HREE-depleted patterns with large negative Eu anomaly. The Sm-Nd age of the alkali granite is $338{\pm}30Ma$ with ${\varepsilon}_{Nd(t)}$ beings -7.3 to -8.5. On the basis of the geochemical studies the source magma was derived from a enriched mantle-like source and had a few or clearly interaction with sialic continental crust. In conclusion, the alkali granitic rock of the Kyeomyeongsan Formation might be formed from the high F peralkaline magma that was emplaced in continental rift environment, and generated at the early Carboniferous.

  • Alkali-silica reaction (ASR) is a chemical reaction in concrete that alkalis in cement react with reactive silica in aggregate in the presence of water. When ASR takes place, it produces gels that absorb water and expand. Swelling of ASR gels can damage concrete and cause cracking and volume expansion in concrete structure. In this paper, mechanical consequences of ASR on concrete are simulated by a finite element (FE) analysis. An FE model of concrete is built. The evolution of concrete mechanical properties subjected to ASR is achieved by FE analyses. The constitutive model of concrete is attained via the FE analysis. A case study is used to demonstrate the proposed method. The simulated results using the proposed model are in good agreement with the observations of concrete with ASR reported in the literature. The results can be used for a basic research to enhance durability of concrete slab tracks and concrete railway sleepers.

  • The behavior of ramie fibers and some wood elements in the early stage of alkali swelling was examined. When the fibers were treated with alkali solution, they significantly shrank in length and swelled in wall thickness. Ramie fibers showed a shrinkage averaging 23% in length and a swelling averaging 92% in width in 100 seconds treating time. Dimensional changes showed different fashion in each element of woods. The tracheids of latewood especially in Pinus densiflora and Larix kaempferi woods swelled intensively and showed balloon swelling, but in the case of Cryptomeria japonica, it was hardly observed. The swelling morphology of libriform fibers was similar to that of tracheids. The walls of vessel elements and parenchyma cells also swelled considerably in thickness but, no balloon swelling was found in both elements. The differences of swelling in different elements can be interpreted in terms of the differences of organization and/or chemical components of the cell walls.

  • The studied Cretaceous granties are widely distributed at the southern Mungyeong area in the southwestern part of Ogcheon Fold Belt. From the mineralogical and geochemical compositions, it is suggested that they show the characteristics of I-type and magnetite-series and formed under the conditions of high oxygen fugacity. The mineral chemistry of plagioclase, alkali feldspar and biotite in the granites by EMPA, was revealed as albite to oligoclase, microcline to microcline perthite and orthoclase perthite, and annite compositions, respectively. The granites have the distribution patterns of enriched LREE and depleted HREE, and show Eu negative anomalies suggesting mainly due to the feldspar fractionation in the residual magma. The geochemical data of Eu, EU/$^*Eu$, Sm and Gd suggest that the granites of the area have more abundant alkali feldspar crystallization than plagioclase. From the geochemical characteristics of Sr/Ba, La/Sm vs. Ce/Yb and other trace element evidences, the granites were the late stage products of differentiation and fractionated from a homogeneous parental granitic magma.

  • The objective of this study is to develop the prototype system for microwave heating in a manufacture process of alkali activated Hwangtoh binder as replacement materials for the cement in concrete. In order to achieve this, four research phases are carried out as follows: 1) establishment of a system concept 2) deduction of a system element 3) design of the entire system 4) making of the prototype system for microwave heating.

  • This paper describes the design of a small size Alkali Metal Thermal to Electric Converter (AMTEC) which employs a capillary structure for recirculating sodium working fluid. The cycle is based on the simple and small capillary type ${\beta}"$ -alumina and wick tube element. The proposed cell consists of the 37 conversion elements with capillary tube of $50{\mu}m$ in diameter and the sealed cylindrical vessel of 22mm in outer diameter. Results on the cycle analysis of sodium flow and heat transfer in the cell showed that the expected power output was 4.65W and the conversion efficiency was 19% for the source temperature of 900K.
