This study is to investigate the allochthonous load and water quality of a typical river-reservoir, Paldang during spring (March ~ May) of 17 years (2001 ~ 2017). Phosphorus loading from point sources seems to have been reduced by 74 % in the 2010s. As a result, trophic state of the Paldang reservoir, eutrophic during the 2000s, has returned to the lmesotrophic state. Along with decrease in phosphorus concentration, standing crops of algae (Chl.a) decreased, and concentration of biodegradable organic material decreased to the past level. Concentration of total suspended solids has decreased, and it is due to the decrease of phytoplankton standing crops since the mid-2000s. As transparency increased, it is estimated that euphotic area increased by 22 % and euphotic capacity expanded by 27 %. In the river/transition zone of Paldang, concentration of organic matter increases slightly due to algal growth, but concentration of all water quality items decreases in the lacustrine zone. Although algal growth rate revealed positive correlation with concentration of phosphorus, it was insignificant. Algal growth appeared to be dependent on renewal of phosphorus by flow, than either flow rate or phosphorus concentration. The empirical model including inflow phytoplankton concentration fit well with observed values, and indicates the Paldang reservoir is greatly influenced by allochthonous loads.

The purpose of this study is to analyze a term of decade of water quality data of the Mulgum intake station on the Nakdong river(dam) to find the cause of algal blooms and to set an alternative to prevent artificial lake water pollution. Our study shows that water quality changes have regular periodic regularity and there was a certain correlation between specific analytical items. According to the analysis results of each factor, the decline in precipitation was not the main reason for algal blooms. TP concentration had a slight effect on Chl-a concentration but was not a limiting nutrient of a bloom. TN concentration had a strong correlation with Chl-a and strongly negative correlation with temperature, but was not a bloom's limiting nutrient, and was only a dependent variable. As the temperature was negatively correlated with the Chl-a concentration, it is found that the aspect of the ecological influence of the temperature was the most important factor of the phytoplankton concentration change. The N/P ratio lies under a power function with a high degree of reliability by the TP concentration, and the phenomenon appeared to be the same as the results of two other comparative areas. This result confirms that TN is dependent on TP and the biota in the lake that TN is a dependent variable whose concentration is determined by TP it. In conclusion, the increase in lake bloom is the result of a food chain change, and it is necessary to control the ecosystem by the food chain in the lake in order to reduce the lake's bloom. In particular, it is important to keep the benthic ecosystem as wide as possible in the aerobic state.
It has been reported that flashing light enhances microalgal biomass productivity and overall photosynthetic efficiency. The algal growth kinetics and oxygen production rates under flashing light with various flashing frequencies (5Hz-37 kHz) were compared with those under equivalent continuous light in photobioreactors. A positive flashing light effect was observed with flashing frequencies over 1kHz. The oxygen production rate under conditions of flashing light was slightly higher than that under continuius ligth. The cells under the hight, particularly at higher cell concentrations. When 37kHz flashing light was applied to an LED-based photobioreactor, the concentration was higher than that obtained under continuous light by about 20%. Flashing light may be a reasonable solution to overcome mutual shading, particularly in high-density algal cultures.
It have been investigated how algal and bacterial symbiotic reaction influences on removal of organic carbon in river ecosystem. And artificial experimentation apparatus was made for algae'and bacteia'culture as lab scale. Investigating and researching minutely the change of concentration of organic carbon substrate and the change of population density of algae'and of bacteria'with this artificial experimentation apparatus, the next results could be obtained. 1. Successful decrease of DOC(dissolved organic carbon) could not be expected unless algal and bacterial biomass floe was nut formed effectively and unless biosorption was not proceeded effectively in the very culture system in which artificial synthetic wastewater was supplied continuously at constant rate. 2. In conditions of culture liquid of 1335 glucnse mg/L(type 1) and of 267 glucose mg:L(type 2), the algal dominant species was always Chlorella vulgaris in both types in which artificial synthetic wastewater were supplied continuously at constant rate and algae population density was around maximum 107 cells/mL. 3. It was around 108 ~ 107 cells/mL that the population density of heterotrophic bacterium. In culture medium systems type 1 and type 2 in which artificial wastewater were supplied continuously at constant rate, the same density appeared initially when using the population density of Escherichia coli w 3110 as indirect indicator. And this density decreased rapidly till the culturing date 35 days were passed away, while this density increased with gentle slope after same date and then the trend of change at type 2 was more severe than one at type 1. 4. When seeing such a change of population density of Escherichia coli w 3110, the growth of heterotrophic bacterium appeared as survival instinct pattern of broader requirement of nutrient at condition of low concentration of organic carbon substrate than condition of high concentration of same substrate.
The effect of silver ion solution on the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa UTEX 2388 (cyanobacterium) and Chlorella sp. KCTC AG20136 (green alga) was investigated using separated and mixed culture in filtered natural water and BG11 medium. In separated culture, M. aeruginosa UTEX 2388 and Chlorella sp. KCTC AG20136 were found to be sensitive to 0.01 and 0.1 mg L$^{-1}$ of silver ion, respectively. Also, the silver ion concentrations for the growth inhibition of M. aeruginosa UTEX 2388 and Chlorella sp. KCTC AG20136 in the mixed culture were same in separated culture. Cyanobacteria were more sensitive to the silver ion solution than green algae. In bloom sample, the minimal inhibition concentration of silver ion solution for the low Chl-${\alpha}$ sample (110$\sim$190 ${\mu}g$ L$^{-1}$) and high Chl-${\alpha}$ sample (1,500$\sim$1,900 ${\mu}g$ L$^{-1}$) was about 0.1 and 3.0 mg L$^{-1}$, respectively. The silver ion concentration for the inhibition of algal bloom sample was affected by the algal biomass. In order to use silver ion solution for the control of algal bloom, the silver ion concentration must be determined in consideration of a minimal effect on the environment.

Spatial and temporal distributions of POC and DOC were surveyed in the North Han River system, Korea The proportion of algal cells was calculated in four reservoirs (Lakes Soyang, Paro, Chunchon, and Uiam). Monthly average DOC concentrations ranged from 1.5 to 2.3 mg C/L, and POC showed larger variation than DOC (range 0.3 to 1.9 mg C/L). The average proportion of POC in TOC was higher than those of typical natural lakes. Due to the influence of the Asian summer monsoon, the seasonal variation in POC concentration depended on heavy rain events occurring during the summer. POC concentrations increased during the summer monsoon season due to turbid storm runoff laden with debris, while DOC concentrations did not increase. The highest POC concentrations were observed in Lake Soyang in 2006 when a severe rain event occurred. In two deep stratified reservoirs (Lake Soyang and Paro) storm runoffs formed an intermediate turbidity layer with high POC and chlorophyll concentrations which is thought to originate from terrestrial debris and periphyton transported by inflowing streams. The proportion of algal cells in total POC was much lower than for most natural lakes, and it varied with season; low in the monsoon season and high in dry seasons with algal blooms. An analysis of POC concentration and chlorophyll a concentration showed that the ratio of POC/Chl.a varied from 24 to 80.
BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to isolate and identify algicidal bacterium that tends to kill the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella, and to determine the algicidal activity and algicidal range of algicide. METHODS AND RESULTS: Among of algicidal bacteria isolated in this study, NH-3 isolate was the strongest algicidal activity against A. catenella. NH-3 isolate was identified on the basis of biochemical characteristics and analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences. The NH-3 isolate showed over 99% homology with Arthrobacter oxydans, and was designated as Arthrobacter sp. NH-3. The optimal culture conditions were $25^{\circ}C$, initial pH 7.0, and 2.0% (w/v) NaCl concentration. The algicidal activity of Arthrobacter sp. NH-3 was significantly increased to maximum value in the late of logarithmic phase. Arthrobacter sp. NH-3 showed algicidal activity through indirect attack, which excreted active substance into the culture filtrate. When 10% culture filtrate of NH-3 was applied to A. catenella, 100% of algal cells were destroyed within 30 h. In addition, the algicidal activities were increased in dose and time dependent manners. The pure algicide was isolated from the ethyl acetate extract of the culture filtrate of NH-3 by using silica gel column chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). We investigated the algicidal activity of this algicide on the growth of harmful algal bloom (HAB) species, including A. catenella. As a result, it showed algicidal activity against several HAB species at a concentration of $100{\mu}g/mL$ and had a relatively wide host range. CONCLUSION: Taken together, our results suggest that Arthrobacter sp. NH-3 and its algicide could be a candidate for controlling of toxic and harmful algal blooms.
To understand the physiology of a suspension-feeding bivalve and its potential impacts on the dynamics of red tides on tidal flats, rates of clearance and ingestion of Glauconome chinensis were measured as a function of algal concentration, when the bivalve was fed on a nontoxic strain of red tide dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum, Cochlodinium polykrikoides or Scrippsiella trochoidea. With increasing algal concentration, weight-specific clearance rate increased rapidly at lower concentrations and after reaching the maximum at ca. 0.2 to 1.0 mgC/L, it decreased at higher concentrations. Maximum clearance rate was nearly equal for different algal species and ranged between 2.1 and 2.6 L/g/hr. Weight-specific ingestion rate also increased at lower algal concentrations but saturated at higher concentrations. Maximum ingestion rate was 2 to 10 fold different with different algal species: S. trochoidea (10.1 mgC/g/hr), P. minimum (3.9 mgC/g/hr), and C. polykrikoides (0.99 mgC/g/hr). Nitrogen and protein content showed that S. trochoidea is the best among the tested three red tide dinoflagellates. The maximum filtration capacity, calculated by combining the data on ingestion rate from laboratory experiments and those from the field for the density of the bivalve and the red tide dinoflagellates was 4.7, 1.4, and 25.3 tons/m2/day for P. minimum, C. polykrikoides, and S. trochoidea, respectively. It is hypothesized that the abundant suspension-feeding bivalves in tidal flats can effectively mitigate the outbreak of red tides.

The large breeding of algae in rivers has caused the algal bloom and has becoming a serious national problem for the safety of water sources. Therefore, in order to supply stable water resources through securing clean water, it is necessary to develop technology for prevention of water pollution caused by algal bloom. The purpose of this study is to improve the water quality management ability of river by applying the algal bloom detection technique using UAV. Unmanned aerial images were acquired for the Dodong in the middle region of the Nakdong River where algal bloom are frequent. In addition, the phytoplankton concentration was acquired through the sampling of algal bloom and the examination of water quality. Correlation between phytoplankton concentrations and the results of applying the algal bloom index to the Unmanned aerial images showed a strong positive correlation. The remote sensing method suggested in this study is expected to improve the initial response capability of river water pollution.

The objectives of this study were to setup a laterally-averaged two-dimensional eutrophication model in Daecheong Reservoir, and to validate the model under two different hydrological conditions; drought year (2001) and wet year (2004). The suggested modeling approach was found to be very effective to simulate the dynamic variations of water temperature, nutrients, dissolved oxygen, and algae in the reservoir. The model satisfactorily replicated the algal bloom that happened between Janggae (Sta.4) and Haenam (Sta.5) during summer of 2001, although the peak concentration was slightly underestimated due to the laterally averaged assumption. The allochthonous phosphorus and algae induced from upstream and So-oak stream during several rainfall events were found to be most significant sources of algal bloom in 2001. In contrast to draught year, the flood events happened during summer months of 2004 tended to remove the hypolimnetic anaerobic conditions and dilute the dissolved phosphorus in the upper reach of the reservoir, and in turn mitigated algal bloom. It implies that the impact of hydrological and hydrodynamic conditions on the reservoir water quality is highly significant, and a drought year may be more vulnerable to algal bloom in the reservoir.
