  • Fires in operating rooms rarely occur. However, this type of disaster can complicate almost any surgical procedure. Fuel, heat and oxygen are related with fire outbreak. When ignition sources such as alcohol-based surgical preparation solutions are present, the risk of an operating room fire increases, and burns are more severe in such conditions. Many manufacturers recommend waiting at least three minutes after application to allow complete drying for reduce fire risk. There are a few studies regarding flame burns in the operation room, although most of these studies are related to preoperative skin preparation. However, alcohol containing solutions can be used occasionally for cleansing of the operation field after the surgery, therefore, the surgical team should pay attention to surgical fires, even if they have completed the operation successfully. We present our case of a post-operative flame burn and introduce some precautions that will reduce the risk of alcohol burns.

  • To trace the plasticizing effects of propylene glycol (PG) on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), the rheological properties of PVA solutions in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and the physical properties of PVA films were discussed in terms of PG content. Both properties were closely related to the hydrogen bond breaking effects of PG The 6 and 12 wt% PVA solutions containing PG exhibited Bingham behavior, which was more noticeable at lower plasticizer content and higher polymer concentration. The 6 wt% PVA solutions containing more than 30 wt% PG showed a sudden decrease of viscosity over the frequency range of 0.08 and 0.2 rad/s. However, the 12 wt% PYA solutions showed no viscosity reduction even at a PG content up to 40 wt%. The glass transition temperature of the PVA/PG films was almost linearly decreased with increasing PG content but an abrupt reduction was observed at a plasticizer content 30 wt%, suggesting that the hydrogen bond breaking effects of PG on PVA became dominant between 20 and 30 wt%. This effect was further supported by the similar tendency of the tensile properties.

  • A study was made of the influence of butyl alcohol on the distribution coefficients of barium and mercury ions between the ion exchange resin, Dowex 50w-x8, 200~400 mesh and solutions containing hydrochloric acid, butyl alcohol and water. The determination of the distribution coefficients of barium and mercury are made by using the batch method. The distribution coefficients of metal ions decrease generally as the number of branches of carbon in the molecule of butyl alcohol increase. It shows that solubility in water and stereo-isomerism of the butyl alcohol have influence upon the distribution coefficient of barium and mercury.

  • This paper presents anisotropic ethcing characteristics of single-crystal silicon in tetramethylammonium hydroxide(TMAH):isopropyl alcohol(IPA) solutions containing pyrazine. With the addition of IPA to TMAH solutions, etching characteristics are exhibited that indicate an improvement in flatness on the etching front and a reduction in undercutting, but the etch rate on (100) silicon is decreased. The (100) silicon etch rate is improved by the addition of pyrazine. An etch rate on (100) silicon of $0.8\;{\mu}m/min$, which is faster by 13 % than a 20 wt.% solution of pure TMAH, is obtained using 20 wt.% TMAH:0.5 g/100 ml pyrazine solutions, but the etch rate on (100) silicon is decreased if more pyrazine is added. With the addition of pyrazine to a 25 wt.% TMAH solution, variations in flatness on the etching front were not observed and the undercutting ratio was reduced by 30 ~ 50 %.

  • Small angle light scattering (SALS) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) have been used to investigate the effects of alcohol on phase separation of chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (CPVC)/tetrahydrofuran (THF)/alcohol (9/61/30 wt%) solution during water vapor induced phase separation. A typical scattering pattern of nucleation & growth (NG) was observed for all casting solutions of CPVC/THF/alcohol. In the case of the phase separation of CPVC dope solution containing 30 wt% ethanol or n-propanol, the demixing with NG was observed to be heterogeneous. Meanwhile, the phase separation of CPVC dope solution with 30 wt% n-butanol was found to be predominantly homogeneous NG. Although the different phase separation behavior of NG was observed with types of alcohol additives, the resultant surface morphology had no remarkable differences. That is, even though the NG process by water vapor is either homogeneous or heterogeneous, this difference does not play a main role on the final surface morphology. However, it was estimated from the result of hydraulic flux that the phase separation by homogeneous NG provided the membrane geometry with lower resistance in comparison with that by heterogeneous one.

  • Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is a semicrystalline polymer whose hydroxyl groups produce inter-and intramolecular hydrogen bonding. The extent of hydrogen bonding is greatly affected by stereoregularity of hydroxyl groups, so-called tacticity, of PVA[1-3]. Hydrogen bonding has a profound effect on the rheological and mechanical properties of the polymer, which is largely determined by the density and spatial arrangement of hydroxyl groups. (omitted)

  • A series of alcohols with perfluorinated segments $F(CF_2)_m(CH_2)_n-OH$, with m=8, 10 and n=4, 6, 10, were synthesized. First, the alcohols were reacted with fatty acid to produce several esters $(F(CF_2)_m(CH_2)-OOC-R$ with m=8, 10 and n=2, 4, 8,) containing perfluoro group by condensation reaction, and characterized by FT-IR, GC, and surface tension. The esters were soluble in ethyl ether, toluene, hexane, ethyl acetate, chloroform, and acetone, but insoluble in methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol and isopropyl alcohol. Preliminary experiments on 1,2-dichloroethane solutions showed a remarkable decrease of surface tension upon addition of the esters. Also, the esters films ranged from 100 to $122^{\circ}$, depending on the structure of fatty acid esters. As the separate experiment, the water-repellency of coated paper and cotton was evaluated. As a result, the water droplet dropped in surface was not permeated for two weeks.

  • Introducing boric acid to the polyviny alcohol(PVA) solutions has a profound effect on the rheological properties through crosslinking between hydroxyl groups of PVA. This study investigates the effect of boric acid on the rheological properties of polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)/dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO)/water systems in the absence of cations. The viscosity of PVA/ DMSO/water systems containing 1 wt.% boric acid was decreased with increasing water content. PVA/DMSO systems containing 1 wt.% boric acid exhibited rheological properties similar to elastic gels by forming crosslinked structures. On the other hand, PVA/water systems containing 1 wt.% boric acid exhibited rheological properties typical of viscous materials. In-corporation of boric acid into PVA/DMSO system caused a notable change in the viscosity of the system, whereas boric acid had little effect on the viscosity of PVA/water system. PVA/DMSO/boric acid system gave the greatest storage modulus among the PVA solution systems. Increasing water level in the mixed solvent of DMSO and water diminished the storage modulus of the systems.

  • A fire extinguishing agent containing non-ionic surfactant which is environmentally friendly and low cost was prepared and tested its characteristics and fire fighting performance. Ethoxylated sorbitol septaoleate, containing 40 moles of ethylene oxide as the primary surfactant, linear ethoxylated secondary alcohol, containing 7-11 moles ethylene oxide as the secondary surfactant, and ethoxylated sorbitol trioleate, containing 40-50 moles of ethylene oxide were used in the agent. It is demonstrated that the water solution containing 6 wt% agent is capable to extinguish gasoline fire when it is put into the fire four times as much as gasoline. According to the field test of class B fire with a unit 1, it is found that the fire fighting performance is directly proportional to the concentration of surfactant in the agent.

  • A new method of cobalt determination has been developed by employing ethylenediamine tetrabutyl acetate(EDTA-butyl ester) synthesized from EDTA and Butyl alcohol. The synthesized EDTA ester dissolved in butyl alcohol extracts various metal ions from aqueous solutions. Cobaltous ion extracted into organic phase containing EDTA ester to form Co (II)-EDTA butyl ester complex is back extracted into alkaline aqueous phase forming a stable pink colored complex of Co (III). The optimum condition for spectrophotometric determination of cobalt via the new complex has been established. The absorption peak occurs at 540$m{\mu}$ and Beer's law was obeyed over the concentration range of 0∼50 ${\mu}g/ml$ of cobalt.
