Objectives: A positive association between serum albumin levels and metabolic syndrome has been reported in observation studies, but it has not been established in the Korean population. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between serum albumin levels and the presence of metabolic syndrome among a sample of apparently healthy Korean adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed data of 3189 community-dwelling people (1189 men and 2000 women) who were aged 40 to 87 years and were living in a rural area in Korea. Serum albumin levels were classified into quartile groups for each sex. Metabolic syndrome was defined according to the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III guidelines with an adjusted waist circumference cut-off value ${\geq}90\;cm$ for men and${\geq}85\;cm$ for women). An independent association between serum albumin levels and metabolic syndrome was assessed by multiple logistic regression analysis. Results: Higher serum albumin levels were associated with increased prevalence of metabolic syndrome. The odds ratio (95% confidence interval) of the prevalence of metabolic syndrome for the highest versus the lowest serum albumin quartiles was 2.81 (1.91 to 4.14) in men and 1.96 (1.52 to 2.52) in women, after adjusting for age, smoking status, alcohol consumption, and physical activity. When each metabolic abnormality was analyzed separately, higher serum albumin levels were significantly associated with hypertriglyceridemia and hyperglycemia in both sexes, and with abdominal obesity in men. Conclusions: These results suggest that higher serum albumin levels are positively associated with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome in Korean adults.
In attempt to improve the chemotherapeutic activity of adriamycin, adriamycin-entrapped HSA microspheres were prepared and investigated by the various in vitro experiments. The shape, surface characteristics and size distribution of HSA microspheres are observed by scanning electron microscopy. The in vitro drug release, albumin matrix degradation by protease of HSA microspheres were studied. The shape of HSA microspheres were spherical and the surface was smooth and compact. The size of HSA microspheres ranged from 0.4 to $2.5\;{\mu}m$ and have average diameters of 0.5 to $0.7\;{\mu}m$. The size distribution of HSA microspheres prepared by ultrasonication was mainly affected by albumin concentration and heating time in the process of hardening. In in vitro, almost all adriamycin was released from HSA microspheres for 8 hr. Analysis of the resulting adriamycin release profiles demonstrated that adriamycin is released from the microspheres in two distinct steps, a fast phase (until 30 min) followed by a much slower sustained release phase. Drug release, which is due to diffusion, was depended on the rate of matrix hydration. Drug release was largely affected by albumin concentration and heating temperature during the process of hardening. Albumin matrix degradation of HSA microspheres was affected by heating temperature and albumin concentration. Higher temperature and longer times generally produce harder, less porous, and slowly degradable microspheres.
Retaining a drug in the stomach by some means is sometimes necessary to extend the G1 absorption time of the drug more than 6-8 hrs. Hydrogel has often been examined for its feasibility as a dosage form, so called platform, that could be retained in the stomach due to its excellent swelling properties in the gastric fluid. In this study, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) hydrogel crosslinked by albumin or acrylated albumin was synthesized in a tablet form and evaluated for its possibility as the platform. The synthesis of the hydrogel was performed by $^{60}Co\;{\gamma}-ray$ irradiation of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (monomer) in the presence of a crosslinking agent: aqueous solution of albumin or acrylated albumin. Synthetic conditions such as radiation dose, dose rate and concentration of crosslinking agent were varied in order to optimize the swelling and mechanical properties of the hydrogels. Degree of swelling of albumin-crosslinked PVP (Al-PVP) was highly dependent on radiation dose, dose rate and albumin concentration: it was decreased as they increased. On the other hand, that of acrylated albumin-crosslinked PVP (Acryl-PVP) was almost independent on them except dose rate: it was decreased as the radiation dose rate increased. The compressive strength of the two hydrogels was decreased as the dose rate increased. Digestion of both PVP in artificial gastric fluid containing pepsin was delayed by the ${\gamma}-ray$ irradiation. In conclusion, Al-PVP and Acry-PVP with diverse swelling and mechanical properties could be obtained by controlling synthetic conditions, mainly the irradiation dose rate.

The functional properties of plasteins have been compared with those of sardine protein concentrate and egg albumin. The solubility of plasteins was higher than that of FPG and the glu-plastein had 84% solubility in the range of pH 3-10. The dispersibility of plasteins was lower than that of egg albumin, however those of plasteins was higher than that of sardine protein concentrate. The water holding capacity of plasteins was higher than that of egg albumin. Lipid absorption of leu-papain plastein was the highest, holding 2.2m119, and that of the other plastein was higher than that of egg albumin. The emulsifying activity of leu-papain plastein was the highest, holding 66.4%, and that of glu-papain plastein was the lowest, holding 51.2%, The emulsifying stability of plasteins was similar to that of the emulsifying activity. The foaming capacitt of leu-papain plastein was the highest, holding 460%, and those of the other plasteins was higher than that of egg albumin. The foaming stability of plasteins was superior to that of egg albumin. The viscosity of plasteins was lower than that of see albumin. The in vitro digestibility of plasteins was 67.6-78.0% range. The digestibility by four pretense were somewhat lower in the glu-papain plastein than in the FPG. The digest of plasteins treated with the microbiol pretense such as molsin and pretense(from Streptomyces griceus), which had a storage broth taste.
Plasteins were synthesized from a peptic filefish protein hydrolysate by papain, $\alpha-chymotrypsin$ and protease(from Streptomyces griceus) under the optimum conditions of previous paper. L-glutamic acid diethylester and L-leucine ethylester were incorporated into plastein during the plastein reaction by papain. The structural changes of freeze-dried filefish meat, peptic hydrolysate, FPC and plasteins were observed by Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM). The functional properties of plasteins also were measured. The solubility of plasteins was higher than that of FPC and the Glu-plastein had $95\%$ solubility in the range of pH 3-10. The dispersibility of Glu-plastein and protease plastein was similar to that of egg albumin, but those of the other plasteins were lower. The water holding capacity of plasteins was lower than that of egg albumin and C. Lipid absorption of Leu-plastein was tile highest, holding 1.80 ml/g, and that of the other plasteins was similar to that of egg albumin. The emulsifying activity of Leu-plastein was the highest, holding $61.2\%$, and that of Glu-plastein was the lowest, holding $50.7\%$. The emulsifying stability of plasteins was similar to that of the emulsifying activity. The emulsifying capacity of Leu-plastein was 384 ml/g(the highest), but that of Glu-plastein and $\alpha-chymotrypsin$ plastein was 248 ml/g(the lowest). The Leu-plastein shelved the highest foaming capacity, $373\%$. The foaming capacity of other plasteins was higher than that of egg albumin. The foaming stability of plasteins was superior to that of egg albumin. The viscosity of plasteins was lower than that of egg albumin. The microstructure of $\alpha-chymotrypsin$ plastein by SEM wassimilar to that of papain plastein, but other plasteins showed differences in their microstructure. The microstructure of Glu-plastein had a smooth shape.
The reaction of sulfhydryl groups in human serum ablumin with bacteriostatic and hypotensive notrosating agents such as sodium nitorprusside and sodium nitrite has been examined. The low reactivity of sodium nitroprusside to sulfhydral groups in albumin has been observed and the sterical inaccessilibility of the agent site which sulfhydryl group resides was implicated. The reaction of sodium nitrite with albumin was highly influenced by pH and little reactivity was observed at physiological pH. On the other hand, the reaction between albumin and S-nitrosoglutatione, an intermediate induced from the reaction of glutathione and nitrosating agents, resulted in the rapid decrease of free sulfhydryl groups in albumin. S-Nitrosylation of the sulfhydryl group by S-nitrosoglutathione and the subsequent production of mixed disulfide is the probable route of modification. In the physiological system, S-nitroso-glutathione may act as an active intermediate in expressing reacivity of nitrosating agents to sulfhydryl groups in albumin.
Binding of four cephalosporins(cefaclor, cefpiramide, ceftazidime, ceforanide) to bovine serum albumin was studied. Difference spectrophotometry was employed to evaluate the nature and the degree of association of cephalosporin-albumin complex. 2-(4'-hydroxybenzen azo) benzoic acid was used as the uv spectrophotometric probe for measuring the binding of cephalosporins to bovine serum albumin. Competitive bindings between cephalosporins and probe were observed. For the binding of cephalosporins to bovine serum albumin, three binding sites were identified. The binding constants of cefaclor, ceforanide, ceftazidime and cefpiramide were $12.57\;{\times}\;10^{-2}M^{-1}$, $6.49\;{\times}\;10^{-2}M^{-1}$, $4.70\;{\times}\;10^{-2}M^{-1}$ and $6.20\;{\times}\;10^{-2}M^{-1}$ respectively.
Dextromethorphan HBr (DMP HBr) ion exchange albumin microcapsules were prepared by the interfacial polymerization method. The incorporation of drugs in empty albumin microcapsules was more increased in case of glutaraldehyde (GA) and formaldehyde (FA) than terephthaloyl chloride (TC) as a cross linking agent. The amount of DMP HBr incorporated into empty albumin micorcapsules was augemented with increasing DMP HBr concentration and the amount of empty microcapsules in the incorporation medium. Increasing the salt concentration in the release medium, the release rate and the DMP HBr amount released from microcapsules were increased. The release rates of DMP HBr from microcapsules retarded considerably compared with DMP HBr powder.
The mechanism of interaction of two drugs viz., amoxicillin and cloxacillin with bovine serum albumin has been investigated using fluorescence absorption and circular dichroism spectroscopy. The quenching mechanism of fluorescence of bovine serum albumin by amoxicillin and cloxacillin was discussed. The binding sites number n and apparent binding constant Kwere measured by fluorescence quenching method. The thermodynamic parameters obtained from data at different temperatures were calculated. The distance r between donor (bovine serum albumin) and acceptor (amoxicillin and cloxacillin) was obtained according to Forster theory of non-radiative energy transfer. The effect of common ions on binding constant was also investigated. The results of synchronous fluorescence spectra, UV-vis absorption spectra and circular dichroism of BSA in presence of amoxicillin and cloxacillin show that the conformation of bovine serum albumin changed

The surface of cyarabine-entrapped albumin microspheres, the surface modified albumin microspheres hsowed remakably incrased hydrophilicity, good dispersability in aqueous medium and reduced aggregation during storage which met the requirements of injectable drug carriers in acqueous vehicle. In vitro cytarabine release from hydrophilic albumin microspheres (HAM) was a function of the cytarabine to albumin ratio, whereas no significant difference in the releasing capacity was obnserved between surface modified HAM within the small size range$(2\;to\;5\mu{m)}$ studied. HAM containing 15-23% drug were gradually degraded by protease and continuously released up to 60% of the total entrapped cytarabine for 6h. These results thus suggest that HAM is a suitable cytarabine carrier which may be injected intraveneously with the benefits of a reduced risk of blood embolism induced by aggregates and prolonged cytarabine release.
