We treat the problem of channel estimation and interference cancellation in multiuser ultra-wide-band (UWB) communication systems over multipath fading channels. The UWB system under consideration employs a random time-hopping impulse radio format. We develop a channel estimation method based on linear weighted algorithm. An iterative channel estimation and interference cancellation scheme is proposed to successively improve the receiver performance. We also consider systems employing multiple transmit and/or receive antennas. For systems with multiple receive antennas, we develop a diversity receiver for the wellseparated antennas. For systems with multiple transmit antennas, we propose to make use of Alamouti’s space-time transmission scheme, and develop the corresponding channel estimation and interference cancellation receiver techniques. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the performance of various UWB receiver techniques developed in this paper.

Multiple input multiple output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) is widely applied in wireless communication by virtue of its excellent properties in data transmission rate and transmission accuracy. However, as a major drawback of MIMO-OFDM systems, the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) complicates the design of the power amplifier at the receiver end. Some available PAPR reduction methods such as selective mapping (SLM) suffer from high computational complexity. In this paper, a low-complexity SLM method based on active constellation extension (ACE) and joint space-time selective mapping (AST-SLM) for reducing PAPR in Alamouti STBC MIMO-OFDM systems is proposed. In SLM scheme, two IFFT operations are required for obtaining each transmission sequence pair, and the selected phase vector is transmitted as side information(SI). However, in the proposed AST-SLM method, only a few IFFT operations are required for generating all the transmission sequence pairs. The complexity of AST-SLM is at least 86% less than SLM. In addition, the SI needed in AST-SLM is at least 92.1% less than SLM by using the presented blind detection scheme to estimate SI. We show, analytically and with simulations, that AST-SLM can achieve significant performance of PAPR reduction and close performance of bit error rate (BER) compared to SLM scheme.

This paper proposes new space-time block codes achieving full rate and full diversity for QAM and quasi-static Rayleigh fading channels when using any number of transmit antennas larger than 3 transmit antennas. These codes are constructed by serially concatenating the constellation rotating $precoders^{[4,5]}$ with the Alamouti scheme$3^{[3]}$ Bike the conventional A-ST-CR code$^{[6,7]}$. Computer simulations show that the proposed codes achieve approximately 1.3dB, 1.4dB and 1.5dB larger coding gains than the ST-CR $codes^{[4,5]}$ for QPSK with 3, 4 and 5 transmit antennas, respectively, and about 3dB for 16QAM with 3 transmit antennas.

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems utilizing direct conversion receiver suffer from frequency selective (FS) and frequency independent (FI) phase and gain imbalances caused by imperfect local oscillator and low pass filter. In this paper, we analyze the impacts of the transmit/receive IQ imbalances on the system and propose the estimation and compensation schemes for those imbalances. The preamble signals coded by Alamouti scheme in the frequency domain could be used in the estimation of relatively large IQ imbalances with FS and FI characteristics and the estimation results are used for the compensation of distortions caused by the FI and FS IQ imbalances. The optimal maximum likelihood (ML) receiver or suboptimal ordered successive interference cancallation (OSIC) receiver utilizing the estimation results show symbol error rate (SER) performance improvement compared to zero-forcing (ZF) technique due to diversity gain inherent in the frequency domain IQ imbalances combined with the frequency selective channels.

In this paper, we analyze and simulate performance of space time block coded (STBC) binary pulse amplitude modulation-direct sequence (BPAM-DS) ultra-wideband (UWB) systems with double binary turbo code in indoor environments for various ubiquitous healthcare (u-healthcare) applications. Indoor wireless channel is modeled as a modified Saleh and Valenzuela (SV) model proposed as a UWB indoor channel model by the IEEE 802.15.SG3a in July 2003. In the STBC encoding process, an Alamouti algorithm for real-valued signals is employed because UWB signals have the type of real signal constellation. It is assumed that the transmitter has knowledge about channel state information. From simulation results, it is shown that the STBC scheme does not have an influence on improving bit error probability performance of the BPAM-DS UWB systems. It is also confirmed that the results of this paper can be applicable for u-healthcare applications.

In this paper, we analyze the IQ(In-phase/Quadrature) imbalance effects at both transmitter and receiver side of OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) and show that IQ imbalance is the parameter to improve the performance using ML and OSIC scheme. Especially, we can archive the diversity gain due to the IQ imbalance in multipath fading environment. In addition, new preamble format is proposed, which enable estimation of the channel and IQ imbalance parameters to maximize the diversity gain. Significant performance improvement is achieved by using the ML(Maximum Likelihood)and OSIC(Ordered Successive Interference Cancellation) with compensation compared to a standard receiver with no compensation for IQ imbalance and proposed channel estimation scheme achieves the better performance improvement than conventional.

Recently, the multi-band orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(MB-OFDM) system, one of UWB system, can satisfy the requirement and can be applied to various wireless communication services because ultra-wideband(UWB) is a wireless communication technique that supports high data rate with low power. In this paper, the method applying Alamouti's space time block code(STBC) and cyclic delay diversity(CDD) is proposed. The proposed method can be easily applied with arbitrary number of relays and only needs two time slots of quasi stationary assumption. And it is applied to the MB-OFDM system. Second, an optimal relaying scheme based on decode-and-forward(DF) method is proposed which is provides good error performance compared to conventional schemes.
This paper investigates the impact of the channel variations and channel estimation errors on the error performance of convolutional coded STBC systems. We consider the orthogonal Almouti STBC and the quasi-orthogonal Jafarkhani STBC, and the error performance of the convolutional coded STBC system is investigated according to the channel variation and channel estimation error via numerical simulations. Simulation results show that, if the channel variation speed is slow, time diversity effects improve the error performance compared to the static-channel cases. However, if the channel variation speed is fast, unlike ZF or MMSE detection, the conventional STBC detection has the significant performance degradation especially with the quasi-orthogonal Jafarkhani STBC. Further, the error performance of the system is significantly degraded as the channel estimation errors become stronger, regardless of the detection scheme and channel variation speed.

The combination of multiple antennas and multi-carrier code division multiple-access (MC-CDMA) is a strong candidate for the downlink of the next generation mobile communications. The study of such systems in scenarios that model real-life trans-missions is an additional step towards an optimized achievement. We consider a realistic MIMO channel with two or four transmit antennas and up to two receive antennas, and channel state information (CSI) mismatches. Depending on the mobile terminal (MT) class, its number of antennas or complexity allowed, different data-rates are proposed with turbo-coding and asymptotic spectral efficiencies from 1 to 4.5 bit/s/Hz, using three algorithms developed within the European IST-MATRICE project. These algorithms can be classified according to the degree of CSI at base-station (BS): i) Transmit space-frequency prefiltering based on constrained zero-forcing algorithm with complete CSI at BS; ii) transmit beamforming based on spatial correlation matrix estimation from partial CSI at BS; iii) orthogonal space-time block coding based on Alamouti scheme without CSI at BS. All presented schemes require a reasonable complexity at MT, and are compatible with a single-antenna receiver. A choice between these algorithms is proposed in order to significantly improve the performance of MC-CDMA and to cover the different environments considered for the next generation cellular systems. For beyond-3G, we propose prefiltering for indoor and pedestrian microcell environments, beamforming for suburban macrocells including high-speed train, and space-time coding for urban conditions with moderate to high speeds.

In evaluating the performance of a dual-hop wireless link, the effects of large and small scale fading has to be considered. To overcome this fading effect, several schemes, such as multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) with orthogonal space time block codes (OSTBC), different combining schemes at the relay and receiving end, and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) are used in both the transmitting and the relay links. In this paper, we first make compare the performance of a two-hop wireless link under a different combination of space diversity in the first and second hop of the amplify-and-forward (AF) case. Our second task in this paper is to incorporate the weak signal of a direct link and then by applying the channel model of two random variables (one for a direct link and another for a relayed link) we get very impressive result at a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) that is comparable with other models at a higher SNR. Our third task is to bring other three schemes under a two-hop wireless link: use of transmit antenna selection (TAS) on both link with weak direct link, distributed Alamouti scheme in two-hop link and single relay antenna with OFDM subcarrier. Finally, all of the schemes mentioned above are compared to select the best possible model. The main finding of the paper is as follows: the use of MIMO on both hops but application TAS on both links with weak direct link and the full rate OFDM with the sub-carrier for an individual link provide a better result as compared to other models.
