MA Al alloys are examined to determine the effects of alloying of Mg and Cu and rolling on tensile deformation behavior at 748 K over a wide strain rate range($10^{-4}-10^3/s$). A powder metallurgy aluminum alloy produced from mechanically alloyed pure Al powder exhibits only a small elongation-to-failure(${\varepsilon}_f$ < ~50%) in high temperature(748 K) tensile deformation at high strain rates(${\acute{\varepsilon}}=1-10^2/s$). ${\varepsilon}_f$ in MA Al-0.5~4.0Mg alloys increases slightly with Mg content(${\varepsilon}_f={\sim}140%$ at 4 mass%). Combined addition of Mg and Cu(MA Al-1.5%Mg-4.0%Cu) is very effective for the occurrence of superplasticity(${\varepsilon}_f$ > 500%). Warm-rolling(at 393-492 K) tends to raise ${\varepsilon}_f$. Lowering the rolling-temperature is effective for increasing the ductility. The effect is rather weak in MA pure Al and MA Al-Mg alloys, but much larger in the MA Al-1.5%Mg-4.0%Cu alloy. Additions of Mg and Cu and warm-rolling of the alloy cause a remarkable reduction in the logarithm of the peak flow stress at low strain rates (${\acute{\varepsilon}}$< ~1/s) and sharpening of microstructure and smoothening of grain boundaries. Additions of Mg and Cu make the strain rate sensitivity(the m value) larger at high strain rates, and the warm-rolling may make the grain boundary sliding easier with less cavitation. Grain boundary facets are observed on the fracture surface when ${\varepsilon}_f$ is large, indicating the operation of grain boundary sliding to a large extent during superplastic deformation.

The influence of subsequent annealing treatment on the dynamic deformation and the fracture behavior of submicrocrystalline Al-4.4%Mg alloy is investigated in this study. After inducing an effective strain of 8 via equal-channel angular pressing at $200^{\circ}C$, most of the grains are considerably reduced to nearly equiaxed grains of $0.3{\mu}m$ in size. With an increment of various subsequent heat treatments for 1 hour, resultant microstructures are found to be fairly stable at temperatures up to $200^{\circ}C$, suggesting that static recovery will be dominantly operative, whereas grain growth is pronounced above $250^{\circ}C$. The results of tensile tests show that yield and ultimate tensile strength decrease, but elongation-to-failure and strain hardening rate increase with an increase in annealing temperatures. The dynamic deformation and the fracture behavior retrieved with a series of torsional tests are explored with respect to annealed microstructures. Such mechanical response is analyzed in relation to resultant microstructure and fracture mode.
The study is intended to investigate the effect of solution treatment on microstructure and corrosion behavior of AZ91(Mg-9%Al-1%Zn-0.3%Mn)-2%Ca casting alloy. In as-cast state, the AZ91-2%Ca alloy consisted of intermetallic ${\beta}(Mg_{17}Al_{12})$, $Al_8Mn_5$ and $Al_2Ca$ phases in ${\alpha}-(Mg)$ matrix. After the solution treatment, Al within the ${\alpha}-(Mg)$ matrix was distributed more homogeneously, along with the slight decrease in the total amount of intermetallic compounds. The corrosion resistance of the AZ91-2%Ca alloy was improved after the solution treatment. The microstructural examinations for the solution-treated samples revealed that the better corrosion resistance may well be related to the incorporation of more oxides and hydroxides such as $Al_2O_3$, $Al(OH)_3$, CaO and $Ca(OH)_2$ into the surface corrosion product without dissolution of the intermetallic phases along the grain boundaries.

In this study, the extruded Al-6.3Zn-2.4Mg alloys were selected among the 7000 series aluminum alloys sensitive to hydrogen environment in order to examine the effects of both the aging conditions and the length of hydrogen charging period on the mechanical properties of the alloy. The specimens were aged for 24hours at $100^{\circ}C$ (under aging (UA)), $120^{\circ}C$ (peak aging (PA)), and $160^{\circ}C$ (over aging (OA)), respectively. Charging tests were performed at RT for 12, 24, 36 hours under potentiostatic conditions (-2000 mV vs (Ag/AgCl)) for 12, 24 and 36 hours in 1M $H_2SO_4$ and 0.1%$NH_4SCN$ solution. The fracture surface was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern in peak aged sample was obtained before and after hydrogen charging from extruded Al-6.3Zn-2.4Mg alloys. The decreasing rate of tensile strength and elongation is represented in order of over aging < under aging < peak aging, and it is believed that the hydrogen recharge is more sensitive to elongation than tensile strength. The formation of $AlH_3$ in hydrogen charged Al-6.3Zn-2.4Mg alloys has been confirmed by X-ray diffraction studies.
In this study, the microstructural characteristics of a high-speed-extruded Mg-5Bi-3Al (BA53) alloy and its tensile, compressive, and high-cycle fatigue properties are investigated. The BA53 alloy is successfully extruded at a die-exit speed of 16.6 m/min without any hot cracking using a large-scale extruder for mass production. The homogenized BA53 billet has a large grain size of ~900 ㎛ and it contains fine and coarse Mg3Bi2 particles. The extruded BA53 alloy has a fully recrystallized microstructure with an average grain size of 33.8 ㎛ owing to the occurrence of complete dynamic recrystallization during high-speed extrusion. In addition, the extruded BA53 alloy contains numerous fine lath-type Mg3Bi2 particles, which are formed through static precipitation during air cooling after exiting the extrusion die. The extruded BA53 alloy has a high tensile yield strength of 175.1 MPa and ultimate tensile strength of 244.4 MPa, which are mainly attributed to the relative fine grain size and numerous fine particles. The compressive yield strength (93.4 MPa) of the extruded BA53 alloy is lower than its tensile yield strength, resulting in a tension-compression yield asymmetry of 0.53. High-cycle fatigue test results reveal that the extruded BA53 alloy has a fatigue strength of 110 MPa and fatigue cracks initiate at the surface of fatigue test specimens, indicating that the Mg3Bi2 particles do not act as fatigue crack initiation sites. Furthermore, the extruded BA53 alloy exhibits a higher fatigue ratio of 0.45 than other commercial extruded Mg-Al-Zn-based alloys.
In the flux used in the batch galvanizing process, the effect of the component ratio of NH4Cl to ZnCl2 on the microstructure, coating adhesion, and corrosion resistance of Zn-Mg-Al ternary alloy-coated steel is evaluated. Many defects such as cracks and bare spots are formed inside the Zn-Mg-Al coating layer during treatment with the flux composition generally used for Zn coating. Deterioration of the coating property is due to the formation of AlClx mixture generated by the reaction of Al element and chloride in the flux. The coatability of the Zn-Mg-Al alloy coating is improved by increasing the content of ZnCl2 in the flux to reduce the amount of chlorine reacting with Al while maintaining the flux effect and the coating adhesion is improved as the component ratio of NH4Cl to ZnCl2 decreases. Zn-Mg-Al alloy-coated steel products treated with the optimized flux composition of NH4Cl·3ZnCl2 show superior corrosion resistance compared to Zn-coated steel products, even with a coating weight of 60 %.
Crystallographic models are effective tools to interpret, calculate and even to predict the preferred crystallographic morphologies of precipitates in various precipitation systems. The present study gives an introduction on the recently developed secondary constrained coincident site lattice (II-CCSL) model. Using the II-CCSL model, the interface matching condition of the ${\beta}-Mg_{17}Al_{12}$ precipitates with ${\alpha}-Mg$ matrix in an aged AZ91 alloy has been analyzed to rationalize the morphologies of the precipitates. The results show that the characteristic crystallographic features of the observed ${\beta}-Mg_{17}Al_{12}$ precipitates, i.e., the habit plane of the ${\beta}-Mg_{17}Al_{12}$ lath with a Burgers orientation relationship (OR) and the growth direction of the ${\beta}-Mg_{17}Al_{12}$ with a Crawley OR exhibit a better lattice matching degree than their vicinal orientations. Moreover, the Crawley OR is preferred to the Burgers OR due to a better lattice match.

In the present study, the microstructure and solution treatment response of Al-Zn-Mg alloys bars by thixo-extrusion was investigated. The alloy bars were solution treated at 400, 430, 460 and $490^{\circ}C$ for various times. In order to examine the microstructures and phase analysis of the samples after solution treatment, it was performed by optical and scanning electron microscopy. And, Vickers hardness and electrical conductivity was measured on the solution treated samples for each condition to investigate the solution treatment response of extruded bars during solution treatment. The results show that the optimum solution heat treatment conditions of thixo-extruded Al-Zn-Mg alloy for minimization of the grain growth and degradation promotion of the second phase is a temperature of $460^{\circ}C$ and holding time of 0.5 to 2 h.
The effects of heat treatments (T6 and T73) on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and high cycle fatigue behavior of modified AA7075 alloys were investigated. A modified 7075 alloy was manufactured using modified-Mg (Mg-Al2Ca) instead of the conventional element Mg. Based on the microstructure, the average grain size was 4.5 ㎛ (T6) and 5.2 ㎛ (T73). Regardless of heat treatment, the modified AA7075 alloys consisted of Al matrix containing homogeneously distributed Al2CuMg and MgZn2 phases with reduced Fe-intermetallic compound. Room temperature tensile tests showed that the properties of modified 7075-T6 (Y.S.: 622MPa, T.S: 675MPa, elongation: 15.4%) were superior to those of T73 alloy (Y.S.: 492MPa, T.S: 548MPa, elongation: 12.8%). Experimental data show that the fatigue life of T6 was 400 MPa, about 64% of its yield strength. However, the fatigue life of T73 alloy was 330 MPa and 67%. Irrespective of the stress level, all crack initiation points were located on the specimen surface, and no inclusions acting as stress concentrators were seen. Superior mechanical properties and high cycle fatigue behavior of modified AA7075-T6 alloy are attributed to the fine grains and homogeneous distribution of small second phases such as MgZn2 and Al2CuMg, in addition to reduced Fe-intermetallic compounds.
In this study, a developed Mg-5Bi-2Al-0.4Mn (BAM520, wt%) alloy was successfully extruded at an extremely high speed of 70 m/min. Microstructural evolution during extrusion and the microstructural characteristics and tensile properties of the very-high-speed extruded BAM520 alloy were then investigated. The homogenized BAM520 billet contained only thermally stable Mg3Bi2 phase particles without any Mg17Al12 phase with a low melting temperature. Therefore, the BAM520 alloy exhibited excellent extrudability. The very-high-speed extruded BAM520 alloy had a completely recrystallized grain structure and a typical basal fiber texture. Despite the extremely high extrusion speed of 70 m/min, the extruded BAM520 alloy had a high ultimate tensile strength of 280 MPa due to combined strengthening effects of a small grain size, numerous fine Mg3Bi2 particles, and strong basal texture.
