Airflow in the nasal cavity of a normal Korean adult is investigated experimentally by tomographic PIV measurement. Knowledge of airflow characteristics in nasal cavities is essential to understand the physiology and pathology aspects of nasal breathing. Several studies have utilized physical models of the healthy nasal cavity to investigate the relationship between nasal anatomy and airflow. All of these researches on nasal airflow are under the condition of constant flow-rate. In this study, nasal cavity flow with the physiological period is investigated by tomographic PIV, for the first time. A pumping system that can produce the periodic flow is created. Thanks to a new method for the model casting by a combination of the rapid prototyping and curing of clear silicone, a transparent rectangular box containing the complex nasal cavity can be made for PIV. The CBC PIV algorithm is used for analysis. Phase-averaged mean and RMS velocity distributions are obtained for inspirational and expiration nasal airflows. The comparison with the constant flow case is appreciated. There exist many flow patterns depending on each phase.

Gasoline engine manufacturers are currently considering designs that will result in low combustion air temperature for improvement of fuel consumption and emission levels. There are a variety of cooling systems that can be used to accomplish this goal. Coolong is therefore normally achieved through a balance of ram and fan action. This paper studies the various systems and compare the cooling performance for several conditions, based on a automotive engine. An experimental analysis was developed to predict the interaction of the fan system and the heat exchangers of the engine cooling system. The local temperature induced by the fan on the cooling system is measured. These experimental result were accomplished using air flow management techniques.

This study investigates the air leakage and heat transfer characteristics of a rotary-type air-to-air heat exchanger with a fiber polyester matrix. The leakage airflow rate is measured using a tracer gas method for various ventilation rates and rotational speeds of the matrix wheel. A correlation equation for air leakage is obtained by combining the pressure leakage and the carryover leakage. The pressure leakage is observed to be a function of ventilation airflow rate only, and the carryover leakage is found to be a linear function of rotational speed. The real efficiency of the heat exchanger can be obtained from its apparent efficiencies by taking into account the air leakage ratio. As the ventilation rate increases, the heat recovery efficiency decreases. As the rotational speed of the matrix increases, the efficiency increases initially but reaches a constant value for the rotational speeds over 10 rpm.

Performance of pyrophyllite-based ceramic membranes newly developed were investigated. Membrane fouling caused by microbial suspensions taken from a full-scaled MBR system at domestic wastewater treatment plant was observed at different airflow rate and distance between each membrane. For the pyrophyllite support, pore size was about $1.0{\mu}m$, but surface coating with $Al_2O_3$ solution decreased the pore size with the reduction of the pure water permeability. With the MLSS taken from the full-scaled MBR system (6 g/L), the fouling rate was decreased by increasing airflow rate under $20L/m^2{\cdot}hr$ of setpoint flux. However, the effectiveness of the airflow rate on the fouling control depends strongly upon the gap between each membrane. At fixed airflow rate, the fouling rate was decreased by increasing the gap between each pyrophyllite membrane. Nevertheless, further increasing the membrane distance from 3.5 to 5.4 cm resulted in higher fouling rate. Similar result was observed with the $Al_2O_3$ coated-pyrophyllite membrane. Nevertheless, the fouling rate was lower with the coated membrane than that observed with the uncoated pyrophyllite support. Regardless of surface coating, the suspended solids were removed almost completely and the surface coating on the pyrophyllite support improved organic rejection with PEG solution (MW : 8000 kDa) tested.

In this study, the combined-type diffuser developed by the Authors, in a previous study, was applied to a residential space. The performance of a ventilation and thermal environment, created by the use of a combined-type diffuser was compared to the pan-type diffuser widely used in apartment houses. In cooling conditions, because of the relatively high air flow rate of ceiling cassette-type air conditioners, the characteristics of airflow distribution in a room were governed by the air conditioner's airflow. In heating conditions, because of the low air flow rate of the diffuser, the characteristics of airflow distribution were governed by the buoyancy effect created by cold external walls and a hot floor. In terms of the Air Diffusion Performance Index (ADPI), which is a thermal environmental index, the result of a combined-type diffuser was greater than a pan-type diffuser in both of cooling and heating conditions. Consequently, the combined-type diffuser showed equal or superior ventilation and thermal environment performance compared to a pan-type diffuser.

Experimental were conducted to obtain information on the effect of airflow rates and bed depths on the resistance of coffee cherries and coffee beans available locally (Coffea Liberica). The airflow used were in the range of 0.06 to 0.6 cu. m/s-sq.m. The moisture content of the coffee cherries ranged from 10 % to 50% (wet basis) and that of coffee beans ranged from 12% to 30% )wet basis). Two methods of filling were used i.e. loose fill and packed fill. Pressure drops across the material bed in a vertical column were measured at several depths using inclined manometer. The pressure drop increased directly with air flow rate as well as bed depths. The effects of air flowrates and moisture contents on the resistance in terms of pressure drip per unit bed depth were analysed. The pressure drop per unit depth across the material bed varied slightly due to different depth. The resistance to airflow decreased with the increase in moisture content for loose fill. However, the effect of moisture content is not apparent for packed fill.
Cu-matrix sintered brake pads and low-alloy heat-resistant steel are commonly applied to basic brake systems in high-energy moving machines. In this research, we analyzed the tribological characteristics to determine the influence of the air velocity between the disk and pad. At a low brake pressure with airflow, the friction stability was decreased as a result of the lack of tribofilm formation at the disk surface. However, there were no significant changes in the friction coefficient under any of the test conditions. The wear rates of the friction materials were decreased with an increase in the airflow velocity. As a result, the airflow velocity influenced the friction stability, as well as the wear rate of the friction materials and disk, but not the friction coefficient.

Air compressor, as an essential equipment used in the factory and plant operations, accounts for around 30% of the total electricity consumption in U.S.A, thereby being proposed advanced technologies to reduce electricity consumption. When the fluctuation of the compressed airflow rate is small, the system stability is increased followed by the reduction of the electricity consumption which results in the efficient design of the energy system. In the statistical analysis, the normal distribution, log normal distribution, gamma distribution or the like are generally used to identify system characteristics. However a single distribution may not fit well the data with long tail, representing sudden air flow rate especially in extremes. In this paper, authors decouple the compressed airflow rate into two parts to present a mixture of distribution function and suggest a method to reduce the electricity consumption. This reduction stems from the fact that a general pareto distribution estimates more accurate quantile value than a gaussian distribution when an airflow rate exceeds over a large number.
Ventilation rate and filter were selected to simultaneously satisfy indoor air quality and minimize energy consumption in residential housing. The concentrations of indoor particles were calculated using an adapted mass balance model for various ventilation airflow rates. To satisfy the guidelines for indoor concentrations of particles, the minimum ventilation rates of 1.0/h, 0.6/h and 0.4/h were required for MERV11, MERV13 and MERV14, respectively. And the fan power consumptions induced by ducts, a heat exchanger and a filter were calculated for various ventilation airflow rates. The increase in the ventilation rate caused a dramatic increase in the power consumption, but the filter performance did not have much of an effect on the fan power for ventilation airflow rates lower than 0.4/h. The use of the ventilation filter of MERV 14 was suggested at a ventilation rate of 0.4/h when the fan power consumptions were considered in addition to the indoor concentrations of particles and $CO_2$. The use of the MERV14 filter at a ventilation rate of 0.6/h could be more effective than the additional use of an indoor air cleaner when the residential housing unit was ventilated.

This study was carried out to improve the performance of heat recovery device attached to exhaust gas flue connected to combustion chamber of greenhouse heating system. Three different units were prepared for the comparison of heat recovery performance; AB-type(control unit) is exactly the same with the typical one fabricated for previous study of analyzing heat recovery performance in greenhouse heating system, other two types(C-type and D-type) modified from the control unit are different in the aspects of airflow direction(U-turn airflow) and pipe arrangement. The results are summarized as follows; 1. In the case of Type-AB, when considering the initial cost and current electricity fee required for system operation, it is expected that one or two years at most would be enough to return the whole cost invested. 2. Type-C and Type-D, basically different with Type-AB in the aspect of airflow pattern, are not sensitive to the change of blower capacity with higher than $25\;m^{3}/min$. Therefore, heat recovery performance was not improved so significantly with the increment of blower capacity. This is assumed to be that air flow resistance in high air capacity reduces the heat exchange rate as well. Never the less, compared with control unit, resultant heat recovery rate in Type-C and Type-D were improved by about 5% and 13%, respectively. 3. Desirable blower capacity for these heat recovery units experimented are expected to be about $25\;m^{3}/min$, and at the proper blower capacity, U-turn airflow units showed better heat recovery performance than control unit. But, without regard to the type of heat recovery unit, it is recommended that comprehensive consideration of system's physical factors such as pipe arrangement density, unit pipe length and pipe thickness, etc., are required for the optimization of heat recovery system in the aspects of not only energy conservation but economic system design.
