  • Recently, micro hydropower and it's useful utilization are taking a growing interest as a countermeasure of global worming by carbon dioxide and exhaustion of fossil fuel. The purpose of this study is to investigate the possibility of extracting micro hydropower wasted by a valve in water supply system using micro cross-flow hydraulic turbine. In order to fulfill the functions of controlling flow rate and pressure in substitute for the valve, air and water are supplied into an air suction hole which is installed on the side wall of micro cross-flow hydraulic turbine. The results show that in case of supplying a lot of air into the air suction hole, about 50% of flow rate and relatively high value of loss coefficient are controlled by the turbine. Moreover, including high possibility of applying the micro cross-flow turbine to water supply system, extended application of the turbine to the water discharge system of drainage and irrigation canal.

  • In evaporative cooling applications, the evaporation water is supplied usually sufficiently larger than the amount evaporated to enlarge contact surface between the water and the air. Especially in indirect evaporative coolers, however, if the evaporation water flow rate is excessively large, the evaporative cooling effect is not used for heat absorption from the hot fluid but spent to the sensible cooling of the evaporation water itself. This would result in a decrease in the cooling performance of the indirect evaporative cooler. In this study, the effects of the evaporation water flow rate on the cooling performance are investigated theoretically. The cooling process in an indirect evaporative cooler is modeled into a set of linear differential equations and solved to obtain the exact solutions to the temperatures of the hot fluid, the moist air, and the evaporation water. Based on the exact solutions, it is analyzed how much the cooling performance is affected by the evaporation water flow rate. The results show that the decrease in the cooling effectiveness is substantial even for a small flow rate of the evaporation water and the relative decrease is more serious for a high-performance evaporative cooler.

  • If water-chillers are arranged in series-series counterflow, compressor lift of each chiller will be decreased in comparison with water-chillers in parallel. That means that compressor power of the chillers in series will be lower than that of chillers in parallel. However, the pressure drop of the water flow through the chillers in series will increase, and thus increase the power of water pumps. This disadvantage will be made good by increasing the temperature difference of water flow through evaporator and condenser, but the water flow rates will decrease. This paper explores the optimal parameters in system of series-series counterflow for central chilled water plants such as the leaving chilled water temperature, the leaving condenser water temperature, condenser water flow rate and number of chillers in series.

  • Recently, the cross flow turbine attracts more and more attention for its good performance over a large operating regime at off design point. This study adopts a very low head cross flow turbine that has barely been studied before, and investigates the effect of air layer on the performance of the cross flow turbine. As open duct is applied in this study and free surface model is used between the air layer and water, an engineering definition of efficiency, instead of traditional definition of efficiency, is used. As torque at the runner fluctuates up and down at a reasonable limit, statistical method is used. Pressure and water volume fraction contours are shown to present the characteristics of air-water flow. With constant air suction in the runner chamber, the water level gradually drops below the runner and efficiency of the turbine can be raised by 10 percent. All considered, the effect of air layer on the performance of turbine is considerable.

  • The air and water flow distributions are experimentally studied for a round header - ten flat tube configuration. Three different inlet orientation modes (parallel, normal, vertical) were investigated. Tests were conducted with downward flow configuration for the mass flux from 70 to $130kg/m^2s$, quality from 0.2 to 0.6, non-dimensional protrusion depth (h/D) from 0,0 to 0.5. It is shown that, for almost all the test conditions, vertical inlet yielded the best flow distribution, followed by normal and parallel inlet. Possible explanation is provided using flow visualization results.

  • A water driven ejector loop was designed and constructed for air absorption. The used ejector was horizontally installed in the loop and annular water jet at the throat entrained air through the circular pipe placed at the center of the ejector. Wide range of water flow rate was provided using two kinds of pumps in the loop. The tested range of water flow rate was 100${\ell}$ /min to 1,000 ${\ell}$/min. Two-phase flow inside the ejector loop was simulated by CFD analysis. Homogeneous particle model was used for void fraction prediction. Water and air flow rates and pressure drop through the ejector were automatically recorded by using the LabView based data acquisition system. Flow characteristics and air bubble velocity field downstream of the ejector were investigated by two-phase flow visualization and PIV measurement based on bubble shadow images. Overall performance of the two-phase ejector predicted by the CFD simulation agrees well with that of the experiment.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the oxygen transfer characteristics of an ejector aeration system. In order to evaluate the oxygen transfer performance of the ejector aeration system, a comparative experiment was conducted on a conventional blower aeration system. The effect of entrained air flow rate and aerating water temperature on the oxygen transfer efficiency was investigated. The dissolved oxygen concentration increased with increasing entrained air flow rate, but decreased with increasing aerating water temperature for two aeration systems. The volumetric mass transfer coefficient increased with increasing entrained air flow rate and with increasing aerating water temperature for both aeration systems. The average mass transfer coefficient for the ejector aeration system was about 20% and 42% higher than that of the blower aeration system within the experimental range of entrained air flow rates and aerating water temperatures.

  • Current expertise in air-water turbulent flows on stepped chutes is limited to laboratory experiments at low to moderate Reynolds numbers on flat horizontal steps. In this study, highly turbulent air-water flows skimming down a large-size stepped chute were systematically investigated with a $22^{\circ}$ slope (Fig. 1). Turbulence manipulation was conducted using vanes or longitudinal ribs to enhance interactions between skimming flows and cavity recirculating regions (Fig. 2). Systematic experiments were performed with seven configurations. The results demonstrated the strong influence of vanes on the air-water flow. An increase in flow resistance was observed consistently with maximum flow resistance achieved with vanes placed in a zigzag pattern.

  • Performance data in the literature on air lift pumps have been based primarily on pumps of long length and large diameter (high lift pumps). Since mariculture operations involve pumps of relatively short length and small diameter, performance data are required for efficient operation. To provide such data, an experimental apparatus was designed and fabricated to test all lift pumps from 2.1 to 3.4 cm inside diameter and from 40 to 300 cm in length. Instrumentation was provided to measure water flow rate and air flow rate as well as water temperature, air temperature, and pressure throughout the system. Results from this study correlate well with high lift pump data in that, for a given pump geometry, maximum water flow occurs for a specific air flow rate. Driving the pump with air flows larger or smaller than this optimum flow rate will decrease the pumping rate. The optimum flows are significantly different for low lift pumps compared to high lift pumps. However, the pumping rate for low lift pumps approaches that for high lift pumps with increasing length.
