The voltage source PWM inverter generally used to drive the air conditioning (A/C) fans has been posing a large issue that the bearings in air conditioning fan motors are highly possible to be corroded electrically. Potential difference called shaft voltage is generated between inner and outer rings of the bearings due to inverter switching. The shaft voltage causes bearing lubricant breakdown dielectrically. As a result, bearing current is caused. This current causes the bearing corrosion. In previous work, we demonstrated that the shaft voltage can be reduced by using an insulator inserted between the outer and inner cores of the rotor in an air conditioning fan motor without grounding. This paper proposes the other countermeasure for reducing the shaft voltage in fan motors. The countermeasure which adds a capacitor between the brackets and the stator core is effective even for fan motors with non-insulated rotor. The effectiveness is confirmed by both simulated and experimental results.
In this study pressure and shaft torque pulsation were measured with variation of head and flow during the model test for a 15 MW Francis Turbine. Pressure pulsations were measured at the inlet of the spiral casing and 4 points in the cone of the diffuser and shaft torque pulsation at the upper position of the turbine. The maximum amplitude of pressure pulsation appeared 2.03% of the maximum rated head with the frequency of 25% of the rated revolution and at the guide vane opening of $10^{\circ}$. Shaft torque pulsation appeared 0.01% of the rated shaft torque, fairly low value. Air was admitted through the cone and pressure pulsation gradually decreased with increase of air flow and kept nearly constant after 5% of the rated flow. A new Francis turbine of which specific speed is 115 m-kW had been designed to rehabilitate the old one and the model test was performed at EPFL. The commercial code, STAR-$CCM^+$ was used for numerical simulation of flow.

This paper presents an experimental study on active control of self-excited vibration for a high speed turbomachinery. In order to suppress the self-excited vibration, it is necessary to actively control the air film pressure or the air film thickness. In this study, active pads are used to control the air film thickness. Active pads are supported by pivots containing piezoelectric actuators and their radial position can be actively controlled by applying voltage to the actuators. The transfer characteristics from actuator inputs to shaft vibration outputs are experimentally investigated. In a tilting-pad gas bearing (TPGB), a shaft is supported by the pressurized air film. Four gap sensors were used to measure the vibration of the shaft and PID was used in the feedback control of the shaft vibration. The experimental results show that the self-excited vibration of the rotor can be effectively suppressed if the PID controller gains are properly chosen. As a result we find that the feedback control is effective for suppressing the self-excited vibration of a rotor system using stack-type PZT actuators.
In this paper it is intended to set-up a sound model of the 60,000rpm 100kW prototype APU gas turbine rotor-bearing system, and particularly to investigate the influences of the tie shaft on the rotordynamic characteristics of the entire APU gas turbine rotor-bearing system, employing the dual shaft model. Firstly, a mock-up APU rotor has been constructed to test and verify the model. Analytical natural frequency results have agreed with the corresponding modal test ones to within 5% difference. Then, the rotordynamic characteristics of the prototype APU rotorbearing system have been investigated. Natural vibration and unbalance response analyses results have shown that the inner tie shaft resonance can cause high enough vibration of the outer main rotor shaft. This could be a concern as the rotor journals operate on very thin air film at high speed. It is concluded as a conservative design practice that the inner tie shaft should be explicitly modeled in the rotordynamic analysis of the APU rotor-bearing system.
In order to enhance high speed stability the composite air spindle system composed of a high modulus carbon fiber composite shaft, powder contained epoxy composite squirrel cage rotor and aluminum tool holder was designed and manufactured. For the optimal design of the composite air spindle system, the stacking sequence and thickness of the composite shaft were selected by considering the fundamental natural frequency and deformation of the system. The analysis gave results that the composite air spindle system had 36% higher natural frequency relative to a conventional air spindle system. The dynamic characteristics of the composite spindle system were compared with those of a conventional steel air spindle system. From the calculated and test results, it was concluded that the composite shaft and the power contained composite rotor were able to enhance the dynamic characteristics of the spindle system effectively due to the low inertia and high speific stiffness of the composite materials.

The present paper concerns a smoke movement in a tunnel fire with a vertical shaft. The model tunnel measured 13.4m long, 0.4m wide and 0.4m high. The cross section is 1: 20 of a full scale tunnel. Ethanol was used as a fuel. The fire size in model tests varied from 1.35 kW to 13.37 kW, which corresponds to full scale fires of 2.41 to 23.91 MW. Smoke front velocity and temperatrue were decreased due to the vertical shaft install. Temperature was reduced maximum about 2$0^{\circ}C$ at ceiling and about 23$^{\circ}C$ at vertical position. CO concentration was reduced as the vent width widened. When vent width was more than 15 cm, CO concentration was not reached 100 ppm. Descent degree of the smoke layer was confirmed through the visualization.

For the stable operation of high speed air spindle, the low rotational inertia and high damping ratio of spindle shafts as well as high fundamental natural frequency are indispensable. Conventional steel spindles are net appropriate for very high speed operation because of their high rotational inertia and low damping ratio. In this study, a high speed spindle composed of carbon fiber epoxy composite shaft and steel flange was designed for maximum critical speed considering minimum static deflection and radial expansion due to bending load and centrifugal force during high speed relation. The stacking angle and the stacking thickness of the composite shaft and the adhesive bonding length of the 7teel flange were selected through vibrational analysis considering static and thermal loads due to temperature rise.

In this paper. the dynamic characteristics of a super high-speed tilting-pad air bearing(TPGB) used in a turbo expander with high expansion ratio are analyzed. The dynamic behavior and stability of a rotary system supported by two journal air bearings are investigated numerically. The transient response of the shaft is obtained by simultaneously solving the equation of motion of the shaft and the dynamic Reynolds equation. The stiffness and damping coefficients of the bearing are calculated from the loading coefficients of the bearing are calculated from the loading capacity. shaft velocity and displacement by using a curve fitting method. The natural frequencies of the 1st and 2nd rigid modes can be calculated from these coefficients. The theoretical method of a rigid rotor system is verified by experimentsut.
Various effluents generated in cooking processes contribute a great deal to indoor air pollution among many other indoor pollutants such as dusts from outdoor and carbon dioxide from human body. Kitchen exhaust hoods are not believed to exhaust indoor contaminants properly in many cases, while generating too much noise. Instead of focusing on individual products of kitchen hoods, we should address the problem by attacking the ventilation system as a whole including vertical shafts and building air-tightness. In this study, it is intended to investigate the pressure distribution along the vertical shaft depending on various system parameters, such as shaft size, concurrent hood usage rate, roof fan, inlet pressure loss, and outdoor temperature. The maximum static pressure in the vertical shaft has been obtained using the method of design of experiments and analyzed by the analysis of variance. The results can be used for the design of kitchen exhaust systems by analyzing the pressure distributions in vertical shafts.
Recently as electronics and semi-conductor industry develop, ultra-precision machine tools that use air-spindle with externally pressurized air bearing appear in need of ultra-precision products which demand high precision property. Effects of air compressibility absorbs the vibration of shaft, this is called averaging effect, however, the higher running accuracy is demanded by degrees, the more important factor is machining errors that affect running accuracy of shaft. Actually, it would be very important in the view points of running accuracy to understand effects of machining errors on the running accuracy of the spindle system quantitatively to design and manufacture precision spindle system in the aspect that efficiency in manufacturing spindle system and performance in operation. So fu, there are some researches on the effects that machining error affect running accuracy. However, because these researches deal with one bearing of spindle system, these results aren't enough to explain how much machining errors affect running accuracy in the typical spindle system overall. In this study, we investigate the effects of the perpendicularity error of bearing and shaft on running accuracy of spindle system that consists of journal and thrust bearing theoretically, and suggest design guideline about shape tolerances.
