  • The experiments were performed with a $31{\times}31{\times}7mm^3$ simulated 3-dimensional module on the thermal conductive board of a parallel plate channel. The convective thermal conductance for the path from the module surface directly to airflow and conjugate thermal conductance for the path leading from the module to the floor by way of a module support, then, to the airflow were determined with several combinations of module-support-construction(210, 0.32, 0.021 K/W)/floor-material(398, 0.236W/mK) and channel height(15-30mm). As the result, it was found that the conjugate thermal conductance and the temperature distribution around the module depend on the thermal resistance of the module support, and the channel height. These configurations were designed to investigate on the feasibility of using the substrate as an effective heat spreader in the forced convective air-cooling of surface mounted heat source. The experimental results were discussed in the light of interactive nature of heat transfer through two paths, one directed from the module to the airflow and the other via the module support and the floor to the air.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the cooling performance of heat sinks for an electronic telecommunication system by adequate natural convection. Heat generation rates of electronic components and the temperature distributions of heat sinks and surrounding air are analyzed experimentally and numerically. In order to perform the heat transfer analysis for the thermal design of telecommunication system a program is developed. The program used the graphic user interface environment to determine the arrangement of heat sources, interior fan capacity, and heat sink configuration. The simulation results showed that the heat sinks were able to achieve a cooling capacity of up to 230W at the maximum temperature difference of $19^{\circ}C$. To verify the results from the numerical simulation, an experiment was conducted under the same condition as the numerical simulation, and their results were compared. The design program gave good prediction of the effects of various parameters involved in the design of a heat sinks for an electronic telecommunication system.

  • White cast iron of 3%C-10%Cr-5%Mo-5%W was casted, and then heat treated with three different methods such as homogenizing, austenitizing and tempering to observe its effects on the microstructure, hardness and abrasive wear resistance. In uni-directional soldification, bamboo tree-like $M_7C_3$ carbide grew along with the heat flow direction, and fishbone-like $M_6C$ carbide was dispersed randomly among $M_7C_3$ carbides. While almost pearlitic structures were observed in the as-cast specimen, those of the heat treated specimens consisted of secondary carbide, retained austenite and tempered martensite. In austenitized specimen, the amounts of retained austenite were 60.88% due to the higher cooling rate encountered in forced air cooling. On the other hand, the amounts of retained austenite were reduced from 60.88% to 23.85% in tempered specimen due to the transformation of austenite into tempered martensite. The hardness of tempered specimen showed the highest value, and then decreased in the order of austenitized, as-cast and homogenized specimens. But, the abrasive wear resistance of austenitized specimen was the highest, and then decreased in the order of tempered, as-cast and homogenized specimens.

  • Cooling technologies using natural and forced convection are limited and operated in very low efficiency. The corona discharge is utilized as the driving mechanism for an ionic pump, which allows for air flow control and generation with low noise and no moving parts. These ideal characteristics of ionic pump give rise to variety applications. However, all of these applications would benefit from maximizing the flow velocities and efficiencies of the pumps. In this study a needle-mesh type ionic pump, with a ring type third electrode installed just near the needle point, has been investigated by focusing on elevating the ionic wind velocity and efficiency. As a result, the enhanced ionic wind velocity and increased power yield can be obtained with the proposed ionic pump with the third electrode.

  • Flow and heat transfer characteristics in a horizontal electronic circuit board are studied numerically. The board has the arrays of heated blocks and the spaces between the plates and blocks are changed. Air in used as cooling fluid, of which prandt1 number is 0.7. The velocity distributions, temperature distributions, Nusselt numbers and dimensionless friction factors are obtained on the spaces between the plates and the blocks, for the cases of Rayleigh number, 0 and 10$^{5}$ . When Rayleigh number is so large, such as 10$^{5}$ , that the effect of bouyancy is not negligible, fluid friction and heat transfer is increased more than those of forced convection. This may be caused by the generation of secondary flow on the cross section of primary flow. The effect of bouyancy is of the most efficient, when the space of blocks is about block-width and the space of plates is about 1.7 times of block-height.

  • This analysis is to investigate the influence of inflow angle when cooling air flows into PC (Printed Circuit) board channels. Flow between PC board channels with heat generating blocks is assumed laminar, incompressible, two-dimensional. Geometric parameters (block spacing (S), block height (H), block width (W) and channel height (L)) are held fixed. Inflow angle variations are $-10^{\circ},\;0^{\circ},\;10^{\circ}$, where uniform heat flux per unit axial length Q (W/m) from heated block surfaces is generated. The governing equations for velocity and temperature are solved by SIMPLE (Semi-Implicit Method Pressure for Linked Equation) algorithm. Nusselt number on each block surfaces is analyzed after a numerical calculation result. The result shows that the assumption on parallel inflow (inflow angle to channel, $0^{\circ}$) to PC board channels can be used without large error even when inflow' angle is varied.

  • Recently, Interior Permanent Magnet Machine(IPM) is widely used for traction motor in the high speed train. Higher efficiency and power density are the superb performance of IPM. Due to the high power density, however, it has lots of heat source which are originated from copper losses and core losses. These heat source can cause the permanent demagnetization in magnet and the loss of torque and power. To prevent the undesirable loss in the traction motor, the accurate loss calculation and the thermal analysis should be preceded. Especially, the end-winding area and permanent magnet area should be examined correctly. In this paper, the electromagnetic fields were examined by finite element method to analyze the electromagnetic properties of IPM and thermal analysis are carried out with pre-calculated losses. To validate the analysis result, the experiment set with forced air cooling system is manufactured.

  • Recently, electronic systems including computers have been rapidly shrinking in size while at the same time the complexity and the capability of these systems continue to grow/sup [1]/. Thus, system volumes have decreased as system power has increased, resulting in dramatic increases in system heat density. The high temperature of the computer system is considered as the major reason for low performance and shortening life of the product. It is necessary to solve this problem due to the heat density increased and to develop the design skill of the computer cabinet according to miniaturization. M4500 desk-top computer was selected for analyzing the thermal management inside cabinet. The cabinet volume, the configuration of the heating devices, the size and location of air ventilation, and the fan selection have been investigated as the important parameters to find out an optimal cabinet design. The objectives of this project were to analyze which design parameters would affect cooling performance by thermal strategy, to design an optimal model, and to measure the temperatures of the main parts to confirm the effect of the thermal design. The temperatures of each part of the optimal model were compared with those of the existing model. As a result. the volume of this miniaturized model was about 16% smaller than that of M4500 without any change in operating performance.
