As fuel cell system is environmental friendly generator, its performance depends on its air supply system. Because, fuel cell stack generates electrical energy by electron and the electron is generated by reacting between air and hydrogen. So, more and more compressed air is supplied, more and more the energy can be obtained. In this study, turbo-expander supported by air foil bearing is introduced as the air supply system used by fuel cell systems. The turbo-expander is a turbo machine which operates at high speed, so air foil bearings suit its purpose for the bearing elements. Analysis for confirming the stability and endurance is conducted. Based on FDM and Newton-Raphson method, characteristics of air foil bearing, dynamic coefficients, pressure field and load capacity, are obtained. Using the characteristics of air foil bearing, the rotordynamic analysis is performed by finite element method. The analysis (stability analysis and critical speed map) shows that turbo-expander is stability at running speed. After the analysis, the test process and results are presented. The goals of test are running up to 90,000 RPM, flow rate of 150 $m^3/h$ and pressure ratio of 1.15. The test results show that the aerodynamic performance and stability of turbo-expander are satisfied to the primary goals.

Experiments were conducted to determine the structural static and dynamic characteristics of air foil bearings. The housing of the bearing on the journal was driven by an impact hammer which was used to simulate dynamic forces acting on the bump loll with various leading condition. Two different bump foils (Cu-coated bump and viscoelastic bump) were tested and the static and dynamic coefficients of two bump foils compared, based on the experimental measurements for a wide range of operating conditions. The static and dynamic characteristics of air foil bearings were extracted 0rpm the frequency response function by least square method and IV(Instrumental Variable) method. The experiment was tested at 0rpm and $10,000\~16,000rpm$, and loaded on $50\~150N$. From the test results, the possibility of the application of high load and high speed condition is suggested.

Recently the use of high-speed equipment in machine-tool industry has greatly increased, which requires the development of prognostics and prediction methods on the design stage. Conversion of the test/experiments stage from real to virtual reality will not only significantly reduce the design and manufacturing cost, but will also increase design quality. This paper shows how it is possible to develop the automated system for the design calculations of the air-bearing spindles. First, the general calculation method is introduced. It contains several steps, namely, geometry identification, pressure calculation, stiffiness calculation, dynamics characteristics calculation. For geometry identification reducing spindle shaft to rings was proposed, which helps to automate the calculation process. For pressure calculation the Peshti method was implemented. For stiffiness calculation the analysis was made, which shown the necessity of correct calculation step selection. Then the system of ordinary differential equations containing influence coefficients was evolved, which is used for trjectories calculation. The graphical representation of the calculation results shows the dynamic behavior of the spindle unit concerning various working conditions. Finally, this automated system is illustrated by an example of the air-bearing spindle calculation.

Identification method is formulated to evaluate the dynamic characteristics of air bearings under NFR (Near Field Recording) sliders. Using dynamic analysis, impulse responses and frequency response functions of NFR sliders are obtained on numerical non-linear models including rigid motion of slider and fluid motion of air bearing under the slider. System parameters are identified by modal analysis method and instrumental variable method. The identified system parameters of sliders are utilized to evaluate the dynamic characteristics of air bearings.

Composite air spindles are appropriate for the high-speed and the high-precision machining as small hole drilling of printed circuit board (PCB) or wafer cutting for manufacturing semiconductors because of the low rotational inertia, the high damping ratio and the high fundamental natural frequency of composite shaft. The axial load and stiffness of composite air spindles fur drilling operation are determined by the thrust ben ring composed of the air supply part mounted on the housing and the rotating part mounted on the rotating shaft. At high-speed rotation, the rotating part of the thrust bearing should be designed considering the stresses induced by centrifugal force as well as the axial stiffness and the natural frequency of the rotating shaft to void the shaft from failure due to the centrifugal force and resonant vibration. In this work, the air supply part of the thrust bearing was designed considering the bending stiffness of the bearing and the applied load. The rotating part of the thrust bearing was designed through finite element analysis considering the cutting forces during manufacturing as well as the static and dynamic characteristics under both the axial and con trifugal forces during high-speed rotation.

In this study, the effect of the shape error of a guideway on the movement of a stage that uses an air bearing is analyzed. The shape error of moving parts supported by the air bearing is known not to affect the vibrations of moving parts as much as the magnitude of the shape error. This is called the "averaging effect." In this study, the effect of shape error on a guideway, as well as the averaging effect of an air-bearing system, is analyzed theoretically using a dynamic-analysis program. The dynamic-analysis program applies a commercially available code in COMSOL and solves the Reynolds equation between the stage and the guideway, along with the equation of motion of the stage. The stage is modeled as a two-degree-of-freedom system. The shape error is applied to the film thickness function in the form of a sine wave. The stage movement is analyzed using the fast Fourier transform process. The eccentricity and tilting are found to be proportional to the amplitude of the shape error of the guideway. Stage vibrations are less than 10% of the amplitude of the shape error on the guideway. This means that the averaging effect of the air bearing is verified quantitatively. Moreover, if the air supply position matches the shape error in the guideway, there is a notable change in eccentricity and tilting.

The feasibility study on the oil-free turbocharger supported by air foil bearings is investigated. Using the perturbation method, dynamic characteristics of air foil bearings are calculated based on the static equilibrium position of a turbocharger rotor is predicted. With collaboration of calculated stiffness and damping of foil bearing, rotordynamic analysis is performed using the finite element method. The effects of bump compliance and bearing clearance on rotordynamic characteristics of the oil-free turbocharger such as the critical speeds, eccentricity ratio, vibration amplitude and stability are investigated.

This study presents a method for determining stiffness and damping coefficients of 30% U slider-air bearings by using perturbation method, and shows that this method is more accurate than steady state method according to the comparison of those with the modal analysis method. Through a generalized lubrication equation, which based on linealized Boltzmann equation, the static and dynamic pressure distributions are calculated by finite volume method.

The theory for a new electromagnetically biased diskless combined radial and axial magnetic bearing is developed. A typical magnetic bearing system is composed of two radial magnetic bearings and an axial magnetic bearing. The axial magnetic bearing with a large axial disk usually limits rotor dynamic performance and makes assembling and disassembling difficult for maintenance work. This paper proposes a novel electromagnet biased integrated radial-axial magnetic bearing without axial disk. This integrated magnetic bearing uses two axial coils to provide the bias flux to the radial and axial air gaps of the combined bearing. The axial magnetic bearing unit in this combined magnetic bearing utilizes reluctance forces developed in the non-uniform air gaps such that the axial disk can be removed from the bearing unit. The 4-pole homopolar type radial magnetic bearing unit is also designed and analyzed. Three dimensional finite element model for the bearing is also developed and analyzed to illustrate the diskless combined magnetic bearing.
The static and dynamic stability analysis of air-lubriceted tilting pad journal bearing which considers tilting effect of each pad and preload but neglects pad inertia were performed. And these characteristic analysis were performed with elasticity effect too. A direct numerical method is used in calculating the static characteristics such as load carrying capacity, firction force and perturbation method is used for calculation of dynamic characteristics. The stability analysis was performed with the variation of bearing number, eccentricity ratio and attitude angle considering pad elasticity effect.
