This thesis describes the use of measured aerosol size distributions and size-resolved hygroscopic growth to examine the physical and chemical properties of several particle classes. The primary objective of this work was to investigate the optical and cloud forming properties of a range of ambient aerosol types measured in a number of different locations. The tool used for most of these analyses is a differential mobility analyzer / tandem differential mobility analyzer (DMA / TDMA) system developed in our research group. To collect the data described in two of the chapters of this thesis, an aircraft-based version of the DMA / TDMA was deployed to Japan and California. The data described in two other chapters were conveniently collected during a period when the aerosol of interest came to us. The unique aspect of this analysis is the use of these data to isolate the size distributions of distinct aerosol types in order to quantify their optical and cloud forming properties. I used collected data during the Asian Aerosol Characterization Experiment (ACE-Asia) to examine the composition and homogeneity of a complex aerosol generated in the deserts and urban regions of China and other Asian countries. An aircraft-based tandem differential mobility analyzer was used for the first time during this campaign to examine the size-resolved hygroscopic properties of particles having diameters between 40 and 586 nm. Asian Dust Above Monterey (ADAM-2003) study was designed both to evaluate the degree to which models can predict the long-range transport of Asian dust, and to examine the physical and optical properties of that aged dust upon reaching the California coast. Aerosol size distributions and hygroscopic growth are measured in College Station, TX to investigate the cloud nucleating and optical properties of a biomass burning aerosol generated from fires on the Yucatan Peninsula. Measured aerosol size distributions and size-resolved hygroscopicity and volatility were used to infer critical supersaturation distributions of the distinct particle types that were observed during this period. The predicted CCN concentrations were used in a cloud model to determine the impact of the different aerosol types on the expected cloud droplet concentration. RH-dependent aerosol extinction coefficients are calculated at a wavelength of 550 nm.

TPMS is a vehicle electric system that measures the air pressure of a tire, and informs the driver of current tire states. The TPMS sensor typically uses unidirectional communication for small size, light weight, and low power. The transmission period of the sensor indicates the service quality of monitoring the tire. In order to determine the optimal transmission period, frame collision probability and the life time of the sensor should be analyzed. In this paper, collision probability model using Venn diagram is designed in low power TPMS with the normal and warning mode. And the life time and a collision probability were analyzed with the ratio(n) of the normal mode to warning mode transmission period. As a result, $T_{nP}=31sec$ and $T_{wP}=2.4sec$ at 5 years, and $T_{nP}=71sec$ and $T_{wP}=2.5sec$ at 7 years.

A magnetic shutter gear is a device that transfers mechanical power by synchronizing the magnetic field between permanent magnet layers facing circumferentially through a harmonic modulator. However, magnetic gears uses many rare-earth permanent magnets to guarantee comparable torque density to that of mechanical reducer. Hence, we propose a novel axial magnetic gear with a dramatically reduced number of permanent magnets and a closed magnetic path. The torque of the system was compared to that of an existing shutter gear through a harmonic analysis of the air-gap magnetic field. The modulator thickness and open ratio were considered as the primary design parameters, and the cogging effect was analyzed for variation of the reduction ratio. A dynamic model between the high-speed side and low-speed side was derived, and position control was performed for a constructed hardware implementation.
Red tide(harmful algae) in the Korean Coastal Waters has a given a great damage to the fishery every you. However, the aim of our study understands the influence of meteorological factors (air and water temperature, precipitation, sunshine, solar radiation, winds) relating to the mechanism of red tide occurrence and monitors red tide by satellite remote sensing, and analyzes the potential area for red tide occurrence by GIS. The meteorological factors have directly influenced on red tide formation. Thus, We want to predict and apply to red tide formation from statistical analyses on the relationships between red tide formation and meteorological factors. In future, it should be realized the near real time monitoring for red tide by the development of remote sensing technique and the construction of integrated model by the red tide information management system (the data base of red tide - meteorological informations). Finally our purpose is support to the prediction information for the possible red tide occurrence by coastal meteorological information and contribute to reduce the red tide disaster by the prediction technique for red tide.

Leading edge extension(LEX) in a highly swept shape applied to a delta wing features the modern air-fighters. The LEX vortices generated upon the upper surface of the wing at high angle of attack enhance the lift force of the delta wing by way of increased negative suction pressure over the surfaces. The present 3-D stereo PIV includes the Identification of 2-D cross-correlation equation, stereo matching of 2-D velocity vectors of two cameras, accurate calculation of 3-D velocity vectors by homogeneous coordinate system, removal of error vectors by a statistical method followed by a continuity equation criterion and so on. A delta wing model with or without LEX was immersed in a circulating water channel. Two high-resolution, high-speed digital cameras$(1280pixel\times1024pixel)$ were used to allow the time-resolved animation work. The present dynamic stereo PIV represents the complicated vortex behavior, especially, in terms of time-dependent characteristics of the vortices at given measuring sections. Quantities such as three velocity vector components, vorticity and other flow information can be easily visualized via the 3D time-resolved post-processing to make the easy understanding of the LEX effect or vortex emerging and collapse which are important phenomena occurring in the field of delta wing aerodynamics.

We investigate initial Fe/O enhancements for 44 large gradual solar energetic particles events from 2010 to 2014 and examine the associations of the Fe/O enhancements with the structures of the heliospheric current sheet (HCS). For this study, we use STEREO SIT Fe and O data in 0.32-0.45 MeV channel as well as ACE ULEIS Fe and O data in 0.32-0.64 MeV channel. We determine 1) the magnetic polarities of the SEP source regions using the potential field source surface (PFSS) model of the coronal field and 2) the spacecraft magnetic footpoints with Parker spiral approximation of interplanetary magnetic field using the in-situ measurements of STEREO and ACE. We find that 29 out of 44 events have initial Fe/O enhanced more than 5 times of the typical gradual event values. In the 6 events, the enhancements are simultaneously observed by two spacecraft. There is a tendency that the high Fe/O enhancements are observed near SEP source regions. It is also noted that the Fe/O enhancements are associated with the polarity of the magnetic footpoints. The high Fe/O enhancements are usually observed where their footpoints lie in the same polarity regions of SEP sources rather than the opposite polarity regions. Although Fe/O enhancements could be due to a transport effect and/or a flare contribution, our result implies that the structure of HCS is likely to affect particle propagations in the interplanetary space.
In this study, we investigated the impact of different initial data on atmospheric modeling results using the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model. Four WRF simulations were conducted with different initialization in March 2015, which showed the highest monthly mean $PM_{10}$ concentration in the recent ten years (2006-2015). The results of WRF simulations using NCEP-FNL and ERA-Interim were compared with observed surface temperature and wind speed data, and the difference of grid nudging effect on WRF simulation between the two data were also analyzed. The FNL simulation showed better accuracy in the simulated temperature and wind speed than the Interim simulation, and the difference was clear in the coastal area. The grid nudging effect on the Interim simulation was larger than that of the FNL simulation. Despite of the higher spatial resolution of ERA-Interim data compared to NCEP-FNL data, the Interim simulation showed slightly worse accuracy than those of the FNL simulation. It was due to uncertainties associated with the Sea Surface Temperature (SST) field in the ERA-Interim data. The results from the Interim simulation with different SST data showed significantly improved accuracy than the standard Interim simulation. It means that the SST field in the ERA-Interim data need to be optimized for the better WRF simulation. In conclusion, although the WRF simulation with ERA-Interim data does not show reasonable accuracy compared to those with NCEP-FNL data, it would be able to be Improved by optimizing the SST variable.

In this study, we have analyzed relationship between the measured Water Soluble Organic Carbon (WSOC) concentrations and the estimated aerosol water content of $PM_{10}$ (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of less than or equal to $10{\mu}m$) for the period between September 2006 and August 2007 at Seoul, Korea. Water content of $PM_{10}$ was estimated by using a gas/particle equilibrium model, Simulating composition of Atmospheric Particles at Equilibrium 2 (SCAPE2). The WSOC concentrations showed low correlation with Elemental Carbon (EC), but Water Insoluble Organic Carbon (WISOC) were highly correlated with EC. It seemed that hydrophilic groups were produced by secondary formation rather than primary formation. As with the previous studies, WSOC showed good correlation with secondary ions ($NO_3{^-}$, $SO_4{^{2-}}$, $NH_4{^+}$), especially WSOC was highly correlated with $NO_3{^-}$ that is a secondary ion formed by photochemical oxidation from more local sources than $SO_4{^{2-}}$. No apparent correlation between the measured WSOC and estimated water content was observed. However, WSOC showed good correlation with estimated water content when it was assumed that relative humidity was higher than the deliquescence relative humidity of the system. In conclusion, WSOC is correlated with water content by hygroscopic ions and it is expected that nitrate play an important role among the water content and WSOC.
A total of 262 dietitians (in 97 college foodservices nationwide, 86 elementary school foodservices, and 79 middle & high school foodservices in the Changwon area) were given a survey questionnaire composed of 18 GMP and 29 SSOP items from May to July, 2011. As a whole, total usage level of GMP facilities (3.65/5 points) and total management level of SSOP (3.86) in college foodservices showed no significant differences compared to those in elementary school foodservices (GMP 3.74, SSOP 4.02) and middle & high school foodservices (GMP 3.75, SSOP 3.95). However, the results of this study suggest that seven items of the GMP facilities and five items of the SSOP should be improved for the development of the HACCP facility model in college foodservices. Those items that showed considerably lower points in GMP were as follows: 'Drain pipes from sinks of the cooking area are connected directly to the drain (3.74)' (P<0.001), 'The grease trap is installed outside the cooking area equipped with an oil separator (3.24)' (P<0.01), 'Entrance and the cooking area are adequately equipped with hand-washing and shoe disinfecting facilities (3.61)' (P<0.001), 'Cooking area, food storage, and dining area are adequately equipped with insect and rodent repellents (3.72)' (P<0.001), 'Cooking areas are equipped with air-conditioning/heating system and ventilation facility for maintenance of temperature and humidity (3.35)' (P<0.05), and 'Toilets for cooking staff only are provided; the its doorways are not directly accessible from the cooking area (3.25)' (P<0.01).
