A Study on the Removal Characteristics of Indoor Air Pollutants using the Air Cleaning System (실공간에서 공기정화시스템을 이용한 실내 오염 입자 제거 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the performance of a commercial air cleaner in removing tobacco smoke indoors. Following injection of tobacco smoke in a room, decay rates for particle concentrations were obtained far mass concentration at each point. The size distribution of the tobacco smoke particles was approximately $1.266{\mu}m$ in mass median diameter with a geometric standard deviation of 1.313. The air cleaner consisted of an electrostatic filtration unit and a fan operated at a flow rate of 5.98 CMM. The collection efficiency for $>1\;{\mu}m$ was more than 99%. Without air cleaner operation, tobacco smoke concentration ratio in room decreased to 30% of initial values within 30 minutes and with air cleaner operation, decreased to 90% of initial values in the test chamber, volume $51.27\;m^3$. Without air cleaner operation, tobacco smoke concentration ratio in room decreased to 10% of initial values within 30 minutes and with air cleaner operation, decreased to 30-70% of initial values in the test chamber, volume $149.2\;m^3$.

Characterization of Fine Dust Collection Using a Filter Ventilation (환기장치와 필터를 활용한 미세먼지 제거특성 조사)

  • In this study, we examined the removal characteristics of suspended particulate matters which are one of carcinogens to cause lung cancer. The fine dust capture by a pilot scale filtration system depends on several important variables such as humidity, initial fine dust injection volume, and flow rate. The average concentration of particulate matters in the test chamber decreased, but the ultimate collection efficiency did not change during the filtration under high humidity, compared to those of using ambient conditions The initial injection amount of fine dust did not influence the particle capturing efficiency. When the flow rate reduced from 0.6 m/s to 0.3 m/s, the dust collection time increased approximately 1.4 times. Among all variables tested, the flow rate showed the most significant effect on the removal efficiency of fine particulate matter.

Effect of Agitation Speed and Air Rate on Separation Efficiency in Fly Ash Flotation (플라이애시 부유선별 과정에서 교반속도와 공기주입량 변화에 따른 영향 연구)

  • This study aimed to investigate the effects of mechanical factors such as agitation speed and air rate in fly ash flotation. Specifically, we used thermal power plant fly ash with unburned carbon content of 3.4 to 3.7%. The effect of pH, agitation speed, collector dosage, and frother dosage - the key factors of froth flotation - showed unburned carbon recovery and unburned carbon content of 63% and 34%, respectively, when the dosage of safflower oil used as collector was 800 g/ton, pH was 7, agitation speed was 1,200 rpm, and frother dosage was 400 g/ton. The SEM/EDS analysis of fly ash in that case indicated that the spherical fly ash particles lowered the unburned carbon content as they floated with the air bubbles without being dissolved in the unburned carbon or settled in the ore solution. The other experiment of changing the mechanical factors such as agitation speed and air rate resulted in unburned carbon recovery and unburned carbon content of 74% and 67%, respectively, at air rate of 8 L/min and agitation speed of 900 rpm. The recovery and unburned carbon content increased as the low agitation speed and additional air injection decreased the strength of the eddy current in the ore solution and consequently prevented the floating of fine fly ash particles with unburned carbon. In addition, the recovery rate and unburned carbon increased further to 80% and 70%, respectively, showing the best performance when the agitation speed and air rate were lowered to 800 rpm and 6 L/min, respectively.

Comparison of Viable Rates of Chick Embryos by Different Eggshell Window Positioning (닭 배자 조작을 위한 난각 주입부위별 생존율 비교)

  • This study was conducted to compare the survival rate of chick embryos among different eggshell window positions and to search for the most appropriate injection position. The eggshells were punctured at blunt-end, sharp-end and side-up with a sterilized fine forceps, respectively. The survival rate of sharp-end window was higher than the other window positions. Injection of Dulbecco’s modified eagle’s medium (DMEM) through blunt-end window (BE1) was impossible because inner cell membrane was obscure. The 2 ${\mu}$L DMEM was injected into 2.5 d-old embryo blood vessel through sharp end window. To prevent hemorrhages at the point of injection, the air bubbles were injected into the embryo blood vessel. The survival rate of chicks embryo in sharp end window was about 17.0%. Therefore, this sharp-end window system will be helpful for the production of germline chimera or transgenic chicken using primordial germ cells ( PGCs ).

Improvement of Cooling Effects of Pylon Injector for Scramjet Combustor (스크램제트 연소기용 파일런 분사기 냉각성능 개선 연구)

  • A new film cooling method to protect the pylon injector from aerodynamic heating for a scramjet combustor is proposed and verified with numerical methods. The conditions for the Mach 8 flight at an altitude of 35km are considered. Air is considered as a coolant. Three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulence model are used. A downward injection of coolant from the top of the pylon gives higher cooling effects with less mass flow rate of coolant than the upward coolant injection from bottom of the pylon. Also, the downward injection shows little flow separation due to the favorable pressure gradient and does not disturb the flowfields near pylon injector, which results in reduction of pressure losses.

  • Performance of a low speed axial compressor is enhanced through a proper configuration of blade row tip injection and casing treatment of groove type. Air injectors were mounted evenly spaced upstream of the blade row within the casing groove and were all aligned parallel to the compressor axis. The groove, which covers all the blade tip chord length, extends all-round the casing circumference. Method of investigation is based on solution of the unsteady form of the Navier-Stokes equations utilizing $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulence model. Extensive parametric studies have been carried out to explore effects of injectors' flow momentums and yaw angles on compressor performance, while being run at different throttle valve setting. Emphasis has been focused on situations near to stall condition. Unsteady numerical analyses for untreated casing and no-injection case for near stall condition provided to discover two well-known criteria for spike stall inception, i.e., blade leading edge spillage and trailing edge back-flow. Final results showed that with only 6 injectors mounted axially in the casing groove and at yaw angle of 15 degrees opposite the direction of the blade row rotation, with a total mass flow rate of only 0.5% of the compressor main flow, surprisingly, the stall margin improves by 15.5%.

Fuel Evaporation Characteristics of a Port Injection Type Motorcycle Engine with Changing Fuel Spray Timing (포트분사식 이륜차 엔진의 연료 분사시기에 따른 연료 증발 특성)

  • This study investigates the characteristics of spray, such as evaporation rate and spray trajectory, for a 4-hole injector which is applied to a 4-valve motorcycle gasoline engine. Three dimensional, unsteady, compressible flow and spray within the intake-port and cylinder have been simulated using the VECTIS code. Spray characteristics were investigated at 6000 rpm engine speed. Furthermore, we visualized fuel behavior in the intake-port using a CCD camera synchronized with a stroboscope in order to compare with the analytical results. Boundary and intial conditions were employed by complete 1-D simulation of the engine using the WAVE code. Fuel was injected into the intake-port at two time intervals relative to the position of the intake valves so that the spray arrived when the valves were closed and fully open. The results showed that the trajectory of the spray was directed towards the lower wall of the port with injection against the closed valves. With open valve injection, a large portion of the fuel was lifted by the co-flowing air towards the upper half of the port and this was confirmed by simulation and visualization.

A Study on the Treatment of Oil Contaminated Soils with Micro-nano Bubbles Soil Washing System (유류오염토양 처리를 위한 마이크로나노버블 토양세척에 관한 연구)

  • The objectives of this study are to examine the processing of oils contamination soil by means of using a micronano-bubble soil washing system, to investigate the various factors such as washing periods, the amount of micro-nano bubbles generated depending on the quantity of acid injection and quantity of air injection, to examine the features involved in the elimination of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) contained in the soil, and thus to evaluate the possibility of practical application on the field for the economic feasibility. The oils contaminated soil used in this study was collected from the 0~15 cm surface layer of an automobile junkyard located in U City. The collected soil was air-dried for 24 hours, and then the large particles and other substances contained in the soil were eliminated and filtered through sieve No.10 (2 mm) to secure consistency in the samples. The TPH concentration of the contaminated soil was found to be 4,914~5,998 mg/kg. The micronano-bubble soil washing system consists of the reactor, the flow equalization tank, the micronano- bubble generator, the pump and the strainer, and was manufactured with stainless material for withstanding acidic phase. When the injected air flow rate was fixed at 2 L/min, for each hydrogen peroxide concentrations (5, 10, 15%) the removal percents for TPH within the contaminated soil with retention times of 30 minutes were respectively identified as 4,931 mg/kg (18.9%), 4,678 mg/kg (18.9%) and, 4,513 mg/kg (17.7%). And when the injected air flow rate was fixed at 2 L/min, for each hydrogen peroxide concentrations (5, 10, 15%) the removal percents for TPH within the contaminated soil with retention times of 120 minutes were respectively identified as4,256 mg/kg (22.3%), 4,621 mg/kg (19.7%) and 4,268 mg/kg (25.9%).

Research and development of Hyundai FFVs(flexible fuel vehicles) (현대 FFV(Flexible Fuel Vehicle) 개발)

  • This paper describes Hyundai's research and development work on a flexible fuel vehicle (FFV). The work on FFV has been conducted to evaluate its potential as an alternative to the conventional gasoline vehicle. Hyundai FFV described here can be operated on M85, gasoline, or any of their combinations, in which the methanol concentration is measured by an electrostatic type fuel sensor. For that operation, a special FFV ECU(Eletronic Control Unit) has been developed and incorporated in the FFV. The characteristics affecting FFV operation, such as FFV ECU control strategy and injector flow rate, have been investigated and optimized through the experiment. And various development tests have been performed in view of engine performance, durability, cold startability, and exhaust emissions reduction. The exhaust gas aftertreatment system consisting of manifold type catalyst and secondary air injection system shows good emission reduction performance including formaldehyde, and finally, the possibility of the FFVs as the low emission vehicles is evaluated by presenting NMOG(Non-Methane Organic Gases) levels with respect to M0 and M85. With these results, it is concluded that FFV can be a candidate for the low emission vehicles, but more works on its durability improvement is required.

3D Unsteady Numerical Analysis to Design Defrosting System of Automotive Windshield Glass (자동차 전면유리의 제상시스템 설계를 위한 3차원 비정상 수치해석)

  • The present research is based upon the numerical analysis of a car windshield in order to represent the optimum design guide to improve the overall defrosting performance of the system. First, the control factors that highly affect the defrosting performance of a car windshield are chosen and afterwards, the optimum variables of each control factor are extracted out to analyze its performance. The main control factors for this research are respectively, the air injection angle of a defroster nozzle, the height of a nozzle outlet, and the ratio of the width to the height of a nozzle outlet. For such case when the air inlet angle is relatively small, the flow near the vicinity of the inner face of a windshield tends to expand. As a consequence, the heat transfer rate through the windshield decreases. Also, the height of a nozzle outlet is recommended to maintain its size to minimum. However, when the ratio mentioned before is designed less than unity, the defrosting performance decreases.
