  • An efficient microbial control system was introduced into a garlic peeling system using pressurized water in order to improve the quality and the shelf-life of peeled garlic. High microbial density of the spoiled peeled garlic and the water used for peeling and washing indicated that an efficient microbial control system is necessary far the peeling system. Though Pseudomonas spp. and Penicillium spp. were closely related to the spoilage of peeled garlic, the spoilage of peeled garlic was thought to be caused mainly by nonspecific increase in microbial density. The shelf-life of the garlic peeled by pressurized water was longer than that of the garlic peeled by pressurized air, and the degree of damage had great effect on the shelf-life of peeled garlic. Ozonated water was effective in decreasing the microbial contamination and in increasing the shelf-life of peeled garlic. Based on the findings of the study, following improvements were made to the garlic peeling system using pressurized water; 1) the water circulation system was modified in order to completely separate the water for washing from the water for garlic peeling, 2) filtration and cooling equipments were introduced into the circulation system of the water for peeling, and 3) an ozone generator which could continuously supply ozonated water (dissolved ozone concentration of 0.4 ppm) was attached to the circulation system of the water for washing.

  • In this study we investigated changes in the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC) under the global warming scenario RCP 4.5 by analysing the results from the World Climate Research Program's (WCRP) Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5). Among the four models that had been employed to analyse the Tsushima Warm Current during the 20th Century, in the CSIRO-Mk3.6.0 and HadGEM2-CC models the transports of the Tsushima Warm Current were 2.8 Sv and 2.1 Sv, respectively, and comparable to observed transport, which is between 2.4 and 2.77 Sv. In the other two models the transports were much greater or smaller than the observed estimates. Using the two models that properly reproduced the transport of the Tsushima Warm Current we investigated the response of the current under the global warming scenario. In both models the volume transports and the temperature were greater in the future climate scenario. Warm advection into the East Sea was intensified to raise the temperature and consequently the heat loss to the air.

  • Applying the numerical scheme developed by Semtner (1974), we investigate the circulation system in the Japan Sea in response to the air-sea interaction and the wind. In spite of blocking straits, resulting surface circulation pattern is similar to the schematic surface current chart introduced by Uda(1934) and Naganuma (1972); the northward flow along the Korean coast and the anticlockwise gyre in the northeastern part of the Japan Sea. Also the southward current flows along the Korean coast at depth of 100-200 m as similar to the North Korean Cold Current suggested by Kim and Kim (1983). And the sinking phenomenon of relatively saline water in the northeastern part of the Japan Sea is similar to the formation of the Japan Sea Proper Water.

  • It has been believed that the circulation in the Japan Sea involves separation of current from the Korean coast and formation of a cold cyclonic gyre in the north. To explain this, a simple quasi-geostrophic linear model is considered. The model is basically of an inflow-outflow system. The local forcings, wind and air-sea heat exchange together with damping (both mechanical and thermal), are imposed upon. The results show that only the buoyancy damping due to perturbations from local thermal adjustment can cause the separation and the gyre. Various types of circulation patterns are possible depending on the intensity of the thermal forcing.

  • Jet Loop Reactor(JLR), in which a two-phase nozzle is installed, is the new design technique for the treatment of high concentration wastewater by accelerating of oxygen contacting between substrate and surrounding bacteria. This numerical study of the two phase jet flow was conducted to find the optimum design of JLR. It was shown that there was a minimum velocity in the nozzle for continuous circulation of wastewater. The optimum location and the size of the draft tube for continuous circulation were examined. It was certain that the smaller the air size is, the more the effect of the mixing increases. The relation between the mixing effect and the turbulence was confirmed.

  • We investigated the change in land-use alteration in a 45 km × 45 km area around the Upo wetlands in 1920s(before the Japanese occupation period), 1950s(immediately Korean independence) and the period 1970s to 2000s. These data can guide in understanding surface environmental changes in the lower Nakdong River from the early 20th century to the present. The influence of the long-term decreasing trend of the wetland area at the Upo Swamp was evaluated using a high-resolution local circulation model. The cooling effect of the wetlands on surface air during the daytime in summer(e.g, early August) was approximately 2℃ greater in the 1920s than in the 2000s, which is attributed to wider water areas in the 1920s. Additionally, long-term changes in land use have caused changes in the convergence zone of local circulation wind.

  • Hot air heater with light oil burner is the most common heater for greenhouse heating in the winter season in Korea. However, since the thermal efficiency of the heater is about 80∼85%, considerable unused heat amount in the form of exhaust gas heat discharges to atmosphere. In order to capture this exhaust heat a heat recovery system for plant bed heating in the greenhouse was built and tested in the hot air heating system of greenhouse. The heat recovery system is made for plant bed or soil heating in the greenhouse. The system consisted of a heat exchanger made of copper pipes, ${\Phi}12.7{\times}0.7t$ located in the rectangular column of $330{\times}330{\times}900mm$, a water circulation pump, circulation plastic pipe and a water tank. The total heat exchanger area is 1.5$m^2$, calculated considering the heat exchange amount between flue gas and water circulated in the copper pipes. The system was attached to the exhaust gas path. The heat recovery system was designed as to even recapture the latent heat of flue gas when exposing to low temperature water in the heat exchanger. According to the performance test it could recover 45,200 to 51,000kJ/hr depending on the water circulation rates of 330 to $690\ell$/hr from the waste heat discharged. The exhaust gas temperature left the heat exchanger dropped to $100^{\circ}C$ from $270^{\circ}C$ by the heat exchange between the water and the flue gas, while water gained the difference and temperature increased to $38^{\circ}C$ from $21^{\circ}C$ at the water flow rate of $690\ell$/hr. By the feasibility test conducted in the greenhouse, the system did not encounter any difficulty in operations. And, the system could recover 220,235kJ of exhaust gas heat in a day, which is equivalent of 34% of the fuel consumption by the water boiler for plant bed heating of 0.2ha in the greenhouse.

  • The separation performance of zigzag air classifier with angle of 90 degrees was studied using narrow size fractions of thin square samples and granular samples. The simulation results of air velocity inside the classifier indicated that the zigzag geometry induces a new pattern consisting of an upward flow and a circulation flow, Experimental results showed that overflow product recovery was described as an integral calculus of normal distribution as a function of dimensionless air velocity ( $V_{A}$ $V_{A50}$), where $V_{A}$ is superficial air velocity and $V_{A50}$ is the $V_{A}$ at the fifty percent recovery. The $V_{A}$ values were predicted using the equations derived from dynamics for a particle dropping in air. A monitoring system that utilizes changes in acoustic signals emitted during the process of air classification was developed to separate PET with desired recovery or grade. The technical feasibility of the on-line monitoring of the PET recovery and grade was demonstrated by measuring relative energy of the signals.signals.als.

  • This studies were carried out to investigate the effects of leaf loading quantity and circulating air volume during bulk curing on the variation of physical and chemical characteristics in flue-cured tobacco. The results are as follows : 1. The content of sugar in cured leaves was decreased with more circulating air volume and leaf loading quantity at bulk curing. 2. Total nitrogen and protein nitrogen were decreased with less circulating air volume and more leaf loading quantity, while amino nitrogen was increased. 3. The contents of linolenic acid and linoleic acid were increased with more leaf loading quantity and oxalic acid and citric acid had a tendency of being increased in case of high circulating air volume. 4. In general, major aromatic compounds were increased through flue-curing. Relatively high content of solanone in case of lower air volume and less leaf loading were observed, while megastig matrienone was increased when leaf loading was small. 5. The more circulation air volume with leaf loading quantity caused lowering equilibrium moisture content and higher shatter index, which resulted in poor quality of cured leaves based on quality index, nitrogen number, taste index phillips index, and sugar-nicotine ratio.

  • The fire whirl occurring in the urban and/or wildland fire is generated by the instabilities of atmosphere. The fire whirl is a rare phenomenon, but highly destructive because it has high inhalation and lift force. In this study, experimental study is performed with oriental oak leaves, for investigating of the fire whirl characteristics occurred in wildland fire. As a result of experiment, the circulation intensity increases as increasing of the induced air velocity, and then the fire whirl occurs. Also, the heat release rate and flame height increase 22% and 18% in highest circulation.
