  • This study is to systematically analyze the effect of various kinds of design factors on the performance of stratified thermal storage tank. Taguchi method, known as a very reasonable tool in the parametric study, is employed in the present work. Three dimensional unsteady numerical experiment is conducted for 4 design parameters of stratified thermal storage tank: inlet Reynolds number, Froude number, diffuser size d with 3 levels (Re=400, 800, 1200, Fr=0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and d=150 mm, 200mm, 300 mm) and diffuser shape with 2 levels. Orthogonal array $L_{18}(2{\times}3^7)$ is adopted for the analysis of variance. The result gives quantitative estimation of the various design parameters affecting the performance and helps to select the main factors for the optimum design of stratified thermal storage tank. Reynolds number is found to be the most dominant parameter and the diffuser shape plays significant role on the performance of stratified thermal storage tank. Based on this finding, the prior questions on the contribution of the diffuser shape proposed by the authors become clear. The optimum condition for the performance is a set of d=300mm, Re=800, and radial regulated plate diffuser. Conformation test shows the repeatability in the analysis and $1.3\%$ difference between the estimated thermocline thickness and that of numerical result.

  • This paper was carried out to survey fire hazard and improvement at the drain pump in air-conditioners. Based on the results of analysis, the proposal of electrical accidents prevention and a construction improvement are as follows. A power connection of the drain pump has two types, an electrical outlet type and direct connection type at control board of air-conditioner. The electrical outlet types need a bulletin sign or education as malfunction of the drain pump include an additional accidents, current leakage and overflowing with water on the floor from breaker trip by exterior cause and breaker off by mistake of worker. On the other hand, the direct connection types prevent a power interruption as exterior cause, but it has some trouble, cut of ground cable and without protection device. Usually it doesn't work by electrician when air-conditioner and the drain pump power work. Therefore an education or countermeasures are recommended for not electrician. Generally malfunction of the drain pump causes accumulated materials into the tank. Even though the accumulated materials lead to an overheating and burning as failure of detector occur an idling, periodic inspection of the air-conditioner filter and the drain pump tank prevent the trouble.

  • A long term passive cooling system is considered as the most important safety feature for the nuclear design after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident in 2011. The conventional active pump driven safety systems are not available during a station Black Out (SBO) accident. The current design requirement on cooling time of the Passive Auxiliarly Feedwater System (PAFS) is about 8 hours only. To meet the 72 hours cooling time, the pool capacity of cooling water tank should be increased as much as 3~4 times larger than that of current water cooling tank. In order to extend the cooling time for 72 hours, a new passive air-water combined cooling system is proposed. This paper provides the feasibility of the combined passive air-water cooling system. The current pool capacity of water cooling system is preserved, and the cooling capability is extended by an additional air cooler.

  • In this paper, fuel tank of the locomotive ER 24 has been studied. Firstly the behavior of fuel and air during the braking time has been investigated by using a two-phase model. Then, the distribution of pressure on the surface of baffles caused by sloshing has been extracted. Also, the fuel tank has been modeled and analyzed using Finite Element Method (FEM) considering loading conditions suggested by the DIN EN 12663 standard and real boundary conditions. In each loading condition, high stressed areas have been identified. By comparing the distribution of pressure caused by sloshing phenomena and suggested loading conditions, optimization of the tank has been taken into consideration. Moreover, internal baffles have been investigated and by modifying their geometric properties, search of the design space has been done to reach the optimal tank. Then, in order to reduce the mass and manufacturing cost of the fuel tank, Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have been employed. It is shown that compared to the primary design, the optimized fuel tank not only provides the safety conditions, but also reduces mass and manufacturing cost by %39 and %73, respectively.

  • The performance of a radiator is generally determined using a wind tunnel, in which the air velocity is uniform. However, when it is installed in a car, the distribution of the air velocity becomes nonuniform due to front-end openings, cross members, and horns etc., resulting in lower performance. In this study, several underhood flow simulations have been first performed to get flow rates and velocity distributions over the radiator. Secondly heat release rates are calculated by both a performance curve and a radiator model. Finally, using an engine cooling system simulator, radiator-top-tank temperature is predicted and the variations of heat release rate and radiator-top-tank temperature with nonuniformity of air velocity distributions are analyzed. The results show that the current engine cooling model successfully accounts for the nonuniformity effects that should be considered for higher accuracy in predicting engine cooling performance.

  • A sunken ship often involves an oil spill. This paper was carried out to minimize environmental and cost damages stemming from oil spil of sunken shipl. Through the analysis of both the standards of the oil tank system and installation, we have identified potential oil spill sites and proposed a remedy of prevention. The result of study, the air pipes of the oil tank are a vulnerable point for oil spill. Also, the remote control devices of emergency shut-off valve have poor accessibility at abandon ship, making it difficult to shut off the emergency shut-off valve. Thus, we propose the addition of a remote quick closing valve in the air pipe and the building of a central control system.

  • An underwater speaker was made of a moving coil driver unite of usual speaker, acryl-boards, polyester resin, rubber and castor oil and it's frequency characteristics was measured in range of 250~600Hz in air water tank and sea. The results of measurements are follows: 1. Transmitting and receiving frequency of measurement frequency were similar in air, water tank and sea. 2. The input and output wave forms of a manufactured speaker which is not water-proof in air were similar to each other in 300~450Hz, but other frequencies showed distorted wave forms. 3. The input and output wave forms of an underwater speaker in water thank and sea were similar to each other in 250~600Hz. But output wave forms showed combination waves with very low frequency. 4. Transmitting and receiving frequency wave forms and resisting pressure of an underwater speaker at 80m in the depth of water were in good condition. Therefore it can be possible to use it as an underwater speaker.

  • Experimental study was conducted to increase the oxygen transfer efficiency of air diffusers in clean water. By measuring the bubble size from the bubbly two-phase flow visualization with several air diffusers the size of air bubbles near the top surface of aeration tank seems to be independent on the diffuser types. Considering design parameters for the better breakup of larger bubbles around the air diffusers, advanced conceptual air diffusers using nozzle-type throat showing the higher oxygen transfer efficiencies were made.

  • An air core is generated during draining through an axisymmetrically placed circular orifice after rotating a cylindrical tank filled with a liquid. If an air core is generated, the draining flow rate decreases and the draining time increases. In this study, the process of the formation of the air core and internal flow characteristics in a cylindrical tank are studied by numerical methods. Several methods are used in the analysis, and the results are compared with experimental results to obtain the appropriate scheme. Axial, radial, and swirl velocity profiles on a variety of heights are shown graphically, and the internal flow structure is analyzed from the velocity profiles, the vector plot, and the stream function distribution.

  • Purpose: The underground air is the warm air discharged from the porous volcano bedrock 30-50m underground in Jeju, including excessive humidity. The temperature of the underground air is $15-20^{\circ}C$ throughout the year. In Jeju, the underground air was used for heating greenhouses by supplying into greenhouses directly. This heating method by supplying the underground air into greenhouses directly had several problems. The study was conducted to develop the heat pump system using underground air as heat source for resolving excessive humidity problem of the underground air, adopting the underground air as a farm supporting project by Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs(MAFRA) and saving heating cost for agricultural facilities. Method: 35kW scale(10 RT) heat pump system using underground air installed in a greenhouse of area $330m^2$ in Jeju-Special Self-Governing Province Agricultural Research & Extension Services, Seogwipo-si, Jeju. The inlet and outlet water temperature of the condenser, the evaporator and the thermal storage tank and the underground air temperature and the air temperature in the greenhouse were measured by T type thermocouples. The data were collected and saved in a data logger(MV200, Yokogawa, Japan). Flow rates of water flowing in the condenser, the evaporator and the thermal storage tank were measured by an ultrasonic flow meter(PT868, Panametrics, Norway). The total electric power that consumed by the system was measured by a wattmeter(CW240, Yokogawa, Japan). Heating COP, rejection heat of condenser, extraction heat of evaporator and heating cost were analyzed. Result: The underground air in Jeju was adopted as a farm supporting project by Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs(MAFRA) in 2010. From 2011, the heat pump systems using underground air as a heat source were installed in 12 farms(16.3ha) in Jeju.
