  • Modern people spend most of their daily lives in their homes, schools, or workplaces, hospitals, shopping malls, subway stations, rooms, and parking lots. According to the survey, air quality management at the multi-use facility is less than 50% satisfied. In this study, a photocatalytic filtration system is developed by utilizing a broadband-to-active photocatalyst that utilizes a media photocatalyst filter that removes airborne germs from indoor air as well as indoor air quality and operates on visible light as well as ultraviolet light.

  • This study has been numerically conducted to investigate the removal efficiency of Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) for different photocatalytic honeycomb filters. Recently, the photocatalysis is being applied to air-cleaner, air-conditioner and vacuum-cleaner with the capability of air-purification, sterilization and antibiosis. However, photocatalysis is less efficient than other methods for removing VOC except in the case of low concentration. So far most of studies have focused on an improvement of the photocatalytic materials, but this study have placed emphasis on the improvements of shape of photocatalytic honeycomb filter. UV irradiation, concentration profile and pressure drop have been investigated for different cross sections of filters and for different filter lengths. Light intensity is dropped sharply with increasing distance from the UV-lamp, and becomes very low in the middle of the filters. Since photocatalytic reaction rate is a function of light intensity, VOC concentration gradient might be small in the middle of long filters. Thus, most of reaction have risen within only three times of dimensionless axial distance. These results can be used effectively for the design of advanced photocatalytic honeycomb filters.

  • Environmental problems have showen over the past decades due to the rapid development of the world economy and the continued growth of the population. Ocher has been widely used for water treatment research, but few studies have been conducted on adsorption of air pollutants using ocher and porous diatomite earth for indoor air purification. In this study, ocher and diatomite earth were sintered with filters to remove indoor air pollutants. The four types of TMA, H2S, NH3 and CH3COOH were used to study the adsorption efficiency of ocher and porous diatomite filters. With the proper use of ocher, diatomite and copper catalysts, indoor air pollutants could be adsorbed. Alkaline substances (TMA and NH3) and acidic substances (H2S and CH3COOH) were able to adsorb at 120 and 90 minutes, respectively.

  • A subway station is a prominent multi-purpose facility where the quantitative management of fine dust, generated by various factors, is conducted. Recently, eco-friendly air purification methods using air-purifying plants are being discussed, with the focus on biofiltration through vegetation. Previous research in this field has confirmed the reduction effects of transition metals such as Fe, which have been identified as harmful to human health. This study aimed to identify the sources of fine dust dispersion within subway stations and derive an efficient operational strategy for air-purifying plants that takes into account the behavior characteristics of fine dust within multi-purpose facilities. The experiment monitored regional fine dust levels through IAQ stations established based on prior research. Also, the data was analyzed through time-series and correlation analyses by linking it with passenger counts at subway stations and the frequency of train stops. Furthermore, to consider energy efficiency, we conducted component-specific power consumption monitoring. Through this study, we were able to derive the optimal operational strategy for air-purifying plants based on time-series comprehensive analysis data and confirm significant energy efficiency.

  • The final goal of this research is to develop a botanical biofiltration system, which combines green interior, biofiltering, and automatic irrigation, which can purify indoor air pollutants according to indoor space and the size of biofilter. The biofilter used in this experiment was designed as an integral form of water metering pump, water tank, blower, humidifier, and multi-level planting space in order to be more suitable for indoor space utilization. This study was performed to compare indoor air quality between the space adjacent to a botanical biofilter and the space away from the biofilter (control) without generation of artificial indoor air pollutants, and to evaluate plant growth depending on multiple floors within the biofilter. Each concentration of indoor air pollutants such as TVOCs, monoxide, and dioxide in the space treated with the biofilter was lower than that of control. Dracaena sanderiana ‘Vitoria’ and Epipremnum aureum ‘N Joy’ also showed normal growth responses regardless of multiple floors within the biofilter. Hence, it was confirmed that the wall-typed botanical biofilter suitable for indoor plants was effective for indoor air purification.

  • Fine dust enters the lungs or blood vessels through the respiratory tract through the air. Recently, due to the fine dust problem, the demand for air purifiers in Korea is also increasing rapidly. Moss is the oldest terrestrial plant, and it is known that it has the property of adsorbing and decomposing heavy metals and fine dust. To compare the effect of reducing fine dust between moss and the existing chemical filter (Hepa), a cube of 1 m3 was manufactured and the amount of fine dust reduction under a controlled environment was compared. Under the fine dust conditions, an umbrella moss filter, rat tail moss filter, feather moss filter, and silk moss filter were inserted for a total of 40 experiments, 10 times each in 4 different situations. The difference between the amount after 30 minutes was statistically significant for all filters. However, as a result of the test, it was confirmed that there was no statistically significant difference between filters for fine dust, mixed gas, CO2, and O2. In particular, it was confirmed that the previously claimed effect of oxygen generation was almost nonexistent. Through this result, it was confirmed that the reduction of fine dust is effective regardless of the species view of moss, and it is expected to replace or supplement the chemical filter of the existing air purifier through future improvement.

  • MF membrane element was specially designed for water purification and VSA process which can solve the fouling problem. Especially VSA process is developed for the SK Chemicals' asymmetric microfiltration hollow fiber membranes. In case of outside-to-in filtration process, MF membrane element showed the excellent flux stability caused by cleaning ability of VSA process . Simultaneous back-washing with VSA consideratbly enhances cleaning efficiency. From the result the possibility of the replacement of chemical coagulation and sand filtration process with newly developed VSA process was revealed.

  • As coffee consumption per person increases annually to 323 cups in 2018, treating the spent coffee ground has arisen because spent coffee ground results in soil and air pollution. The demands of air purification filters are increasing more and more because the air pollution due to the fine dust has become worse. The spent coffee grounds had a porous structure, however, the pore was blocked by organic oil compounds. Electrocoagulation, which is one of the electrochemical methods, has the potential to remove the organic compounds. The surface area of spent coffee grounds increased effectively after the electrocoagulation treatment, and surface morphology and surface area were confirmed using SEM and BET, respectively. Using the FT-IR, both the spent coffee grounds and the electrocoagulated spent coffee grounds were characterized. The filter characteristics were examined by the adsorption test using formaldehyde, one of the air pollutants.

  • Public attention to the indoor environment of underground subway stations, which is a representative multi-use facility, has been increasing along with the increase in indoor activities. In underground stations, fine iron oxide, which affects the health of users, is generated because of the friction between wheels and rails. Among particulate pollutant reduction technologies, plants have been considered as a non-chemical air purification method, and their effects in reducing certain chemical species have been identified in previous studies. The present study aimed to derive the total quantitative and qualitative reduction effects of a bio-filter system comprising air purifying plants, installed in an underground subway station. The experiment proceeded in two ways. First, PM(particulate matter) reduction effect by vegetation biofilter was monitored with the IAQ(indoor air quality) station. In addition, chemical speciation analysis conducted on the samples collected from the experimental and control areas where plants and irrigation using SEM-EDS(scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy). This study confirmed the effect of the vegetation bio-filter system in reducing the accumulation of particulate pollutants and transition and other metals that are harmful to the human body.
