  • Sudden intrusion of a large amount of surface water into a flood defensive tunnel or pipeline system can compress the residual air. The compressed air may explode along with water through the inlet or air vent, resulting in hydraulic capacity degradation or safety hazards. This study aims to investigate the behavior of compressed air body in pipelines according to the residual air condition with a series of laboratory experiments measuring pressure variation. It has been found that flow characteristics and residual air conditions have a dominant influence on the magnitude and periodicity of the pressure variation. A proper measure to effectively control the residual air is required for securing the design capacity of flood defensive pipeline systems, since the peak pressure is predominantly affected by residual air conditions.

  • Pressure oscillation caused by the compressibility of entrapped air in dam break flow is analyzed using an open source code, which is a two-phase compressible code for non-isothermal immiscible fluids. Since compressible flows are computed based on a pressure-based method, the code can handle the equation of state of barotropic fluid, which is virtually incompressible. The computed time variation of pressure is compared with other experimental and computational results. The present result shows good agreements with other results until the air is entrapped. As the entrapped air bubbles pulsate, pressure oscillations are predicted and the pressure oscillations damp out quickly. Although the compressibility parameter of water has been varied for a wide range, it has no effects on the computed results, because the present equation of state for water is so close to that of incompressible fluid. Grid independency test for computed time variation of pressure shows that all results predict similar period of pressure oscillation and quick damping out of the oscillation, even though the amplitude of pressure oscillation is sensitive to the velocity field at the moment of the entrapping. It is observed that as pressure inside the entrapped air changes quickly, the pressure field in the neighboring water adjusts instantly, because the sound of speed is much higher in water. It is confirmed that the period of pressure oscillation is dominated by the added mass of neighboring water. It is found that the temperature oscillation of the entrapped air is critical to the quick damping out of the oscillations, due to the fact that the time averaged temperature inside the entrapped air is higher than that of surrounding water, which is almost constant.

  • Nonlinear characteristics of air pressure variation and wave transformation of a fixed air-chamber structure are discussed theoretically and experimentally. Two analytical methods(method I and II) based on the perturbation method and Green's formula are employed in order to evaluate nonlinearities by the submerged and semi-submerged air-chamber structure. Moreover, an air compression model is newly developed to estimate the dynamic air pressure in the air-chamber inside the structure, assuming the Boyle-Charles's law with adiabatic process in the air pressure variation. Theoretical values of the method I considering evanescent mode waves at an fictious boundary, are in good agreement with those of method II employing the fictious boundary which is not affected by evanescent mode waves. Both theoretical values are shown to agree well with experimental values.

  • The performance of reciprocating internal combustion engine is a strong function of the air intake system configuration. In order to improve engine power, it is essential to optimize the air induction system. In this study, a numerical investigation has been carried out for the three-dimensional flow and pressure characteristics in air intake system of a large-sized commercial bus. CFD simulations using STAR-CD were also perform ed to evaluate effects of intake duct geometry and structure variation inside air cleaner on the negative pressure distribution of overall intake system. Studies for improving the back pressure distribution have been proposed and quantitatively examined based on intensive case studies.

  • In this study, we measured the air tightness of a train using pressure variation in tunnels. To estimate the air tightness of a train is essential to comprehend the pressure variation of the cabin because air tightness is strongly related with ear discomfort. If we can determine the air tightness, we can predict the pressure variation of the cabin. Also, ear discomfort is a problem that can be caused in a high speed train, as well as in Korea's Great Train Express. In this study, we compared the various international standards for ear discomfort and estimated the air tightness of each vehicle based on experimental data obtained using the ITX, KTX and KTX-sancheon(honam) vehicles. The internal pressure variation of the trains is numerically calculated using the air tightness value. The results are good compared to the experimental results. Instead of flap type ventilation, in the future, continuous ventilation equipment will be needed for speed-up.

  • All of the Korean high speed train windows have been imported from abroad up to now. In this paper, the air pressure endurance test device for high speed train windows was studied and developed. This test device can create air pressure variation similar to train running real condition and carry out pressure endurance test according to international standard. Henceforward, this test device will be useful for domestic production of high speed train windows.

  • The concentrations of air pollutants In large cities such as Pusan area have been increased every year due to the increasing of fuels consumption at factories and by vehicles as well as the gravitation of the population. In addition to the pollution sources, time and spatial variation of air pollutants concentration and meteorological factors have a great influence on the air pollution problem. Especially , its concentration is governed by wind direction, wind speed, precipitation, solar radiation, temperature, humidity and cloud amounts, etc. In this study, we have analyzed various data of meteorological factors using typical patterns of the air pressure to investigate how the concentration of air pollutants is varied with meteorological condition. Using the relationship between meteorological factors (air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and solar radiation) and the concentration of air pollutants (SO2, O3) , experimental prediction formulas for their concentration were obtained. Therefore, these prediction formulas at each meteorological factor in a pressure pattern may be roughly used to predict the air pollutants concentration and contributed to estimate the variation of its value according to the weather condition in Pusan city.

  • For successful design of component, performances of one-tank plate type evaporator, gas-liquid separation type condenser, swash plate type compressor and thermostatic expansion valve for automotive air conditioner are investigated experimentally. Heat transfer characteristics in the evaporator are examined by means of air temperature, relative humidity, air volume flow, outlet refrigerant pressure and superheat, and heat transfer characteristics in the condenser are examined by means of air temperature, air velocity and inlet refrigerant pressure. Pressure drops for both evaporator and condenser are measured arid empirical correlations are derived. Volumetric efficiencies and isentropic efficiencies for trio types of compressors with different capacity are measured and compared. Thermostatic expansion valve is tested to investigate the pressure variation according to temperature changes.

  • In sheet metal forming process using press and draw die some defect can be made because of the high pressure of air pocket between draw die and the product. The purpose of this study is to develop a program to decide an optimal combination of air vent hole size and number to prevent those defect on product. The air inside air pocket is considered as ideal gas and the compression and expansion is assumed as isentropic process. The mass flow is computed in two flow condition: unchocked and chocked condition. The present computation obtains required cross-sectional area of air vent hole for not exceeding the user specified pressure such as the pressure for yielding strength of the product or the pressure for unchocked flow. To validate the program the present results are compared with the results of other researchers and commercial CFD code.

  • The characteristics of train-wind in the underground shopping center(UGSC) connected to subway station is investigated by field measurement for the case of train movement such as arrival and departure, etc. Also air curtain installed at the pass way between underground shopping center and subway station were considered as the parameter in order to analysis the effect on indoor air quality and thermal condition. The measurement data such as velocity, relative humidity, wind-pressure were plotted as quantity variation with time scale. The train-wind affected wind velocity, air pressure and relative humidity at the connecting area of underground shopping center and subway station, and the variation was about 4.5 m/s, 8%, 40 Pa. Also the result showed that the air curtain is not proper to reduce influence of train-wind
