The objective of this is to experimentally investigate the effect of mixed jet on the oxygen transfer characteristics with the primary nozzle area ratio of an annular nozzle ejector for the application of a microbial fuel cell. A direct visualization method with a high speed camera system was used to capture the horizontal mixed jet images, and a binarization technique was used to analyze the images. The clean water unsteady state technique was used for the oxygen transfer measurement. The air-water mixed jet discharging into a water tank behaved similar to a buoyancy or horizontal jet with the primary nozzle area ratio. It was found that an optimum primary nozzle area ratio was observed where the oxygen transfer performance reached its maximum value due to the decrease of air volume fraction and the increase of jet length and air bubble dispersion.
In continuous galvanizing process at steel making plant, coating weight on the surface of strip that pass through air knife is controlled by the pressure at the chamber of air knife and the gap between the nozzle of air knife and strip. The pressure can be easily measured and controlled. But it is difficult to measure the distance between Air knife nozzle and strip, and also difficult to decide how much distance air knife move. Because, the gap between nozzle and strip varies with the height of air knife, intermesh of stabilizing roll and welding of strips that have different thickness. In this research, we developed a gap sensor that can measure the relative distance between Air knife nozzle and strip. And several tests are performed to find optimal condition for application at real plant. We performed test in which the possibility of the sensor to apply ...
The atomization characteristics of the dual air supplying twin-fluid nozzle were investigated experimentally using PIV and PDA systems. The two-fluid nozzle is composed of three main parts: the feeding injector to supply fluid that is controlled by a PWM (pulse-width modulation) mode, the adaptor as a device with the ports for supplying the carrier and assist air and the main nozzle to produce the spray. The main nozzle has the swirl tip with four equally spaced tangential slots, which give the injecting fluid an angular momentum. The angle of the swirl tip varied with 0$^{\circ}$ 30$^{\circ}$, 60$^{\circ}$ and 90$^{\circ}$, and the ratios of carrier air to assist air and ALR(total air to liquid) were 0.55 and 1.23, respectively. The macroscopic behavior of the spray was investigated using PIV system, and the mean velocity, turbulent intensity and SMD distributions of the sprays were measured using PDA system. As the results, the mean axial velocity at the spray centerline decrease with the increase of the swirl angle. The turbulent intensities of the axial and radial velocity were increased with the increase of the swirl angle. The mean SMD (Sauter mean diameter) of the radial direction along the axial distance shows the lowest value at the swirl angle of 60$^{\circ}$.
A transportation system of single wafer has been developed to be applied to semiconductor manufacturing process of the next generation. In this study, the experimental apparatus consists of two kinds of track, one is for propelling a wafer, so called control track, the other is for generating an air film to transfer a wafer, so called transfer track. The wafer transportation speed has been evaluated by the numerical and the experimental methods for three types of nozzle position a..ay (i.e., the front-, face- and rear-array) in an air levitation system. Test facility for 300mm wafer has been equipped with two control tracks and one transfer track of 1500mm length from the starting point to the stopping point. From the present results, it is found that the experimental values of the wafer transportation speed are well in agreement with the computed ones. Namely, the computed values of the maximum wafer transportation speed $V_{max}$ are slightly higher than the experimental ones by about $15{\times}20%$. The disparities in $V_{max}$ between the numerical and the experimental results become smaller as the air velocity increases. Also, at the same air flow rate, the order of wafer transportation speeds is : $V_{max}$ for the front-array > $V_{max}$ for the face-array > $V_{max}$ for the rear-array. However, the face-array is rather more stable than any other type of nozzle array to ensure safe transportation of a wafer.
When galvanized steel strip is produced through a continuous hot-dip galvanizing process, the thickness of the adhered zinc film is controlled by impinging a thin plane nitrogen gas jet. The thickness of the zinc film is generally affected by impinging pressure distribution, its gradient and shearing stress at the steel strip. These factors are influenced by static pressure of gas spraying at air knife nozzle, a nozzle-to-strip distance and strip and a geometric shape of the air knife, as well. At industries, galvanized steel strip is produced by changing static pressure of gas and a distance between the air knife nozzle and strip based on experimental values but remaining a geometric shape of nozzle. Splashing and check-mark strain can generally occur when a distance between the air knife nozzle and strip is too short, while ability of zinc removal can lower due to pressure loss of impinging jet when a distance between the air knife nozzle and strip is too long. In present study, buckling of the jet and change of static pressure are observed by analyzing flow characteristics of the impinging jet. The distance from the nozzle exit to the strip varies from 6 mm to 16 mm by an increment of 2 mm. Moreover, final coating thickness with change of a distance between the air knife nozzle and strip is compared with each case. An ability of zinc removal with the various distances is predicted by numerically calculating the final coating thickness.
Experiments were performed to investigate the characteristics of combustion of 7MW-3 air stages combustion system for a heavy oil firing boiler. Several fuel nozzles were developed for the purpose of lowering pollutions in another institute and ${\Phi}$-jet nozzle among them was equipped to the combustion system. A variety of combustion phenomena were observed as air stage ratio, air fuel ratio and load are changed for each nozzle. Main combustion characteristics are shape of flame, NOx and CO generations, smoke scale number. Through lots of adjustments, the combustion system reaches such goals as the low NOx of 160 ppm, CO of 300 ppm corrected at $O_2$ of 4% and dust of 150 mg/Sm3.
The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of driving atomizing nozzle position, the slope of sludge entering tube and supplying air flow rate on the performance of sludge air dryer. This paper deals with optimization of the geometry of the atomizing nozzle for sludge drying using computational fluid dynamics and drying performance test using pilot air dryer. The air drying system was composed of the atomizing nozzle which made high-speed fluid field. dewatered cake was crushed at the high-speed zone as the first step and formed intto dried powder of sphere shape by the collision between particles at the circling zone. The CFD analysis results show when the slope of entering sludge tube is smaller, suction air amount is increased. It is shown that the developed atomizing nozzle is very excellent in the drying performance through pilot test.
Automated material handling system is being used as a method to reduce manufacturing cost in the semiconductor and flat panel displays (FPDs) manufacturing process. Those are considering switch-over from the traditional cassette system to single-substrate transfer system to reduce raw materials of stocks in the processing line. In the present study, the wafer transportation speed has been evaluated by numerical and experimental method for three propulsion nozzle array (face, front, rear) in an air levitation system. Test facility for 300 mm wafer was equipped with two control tracks and a transfer track of 1,500mm length. The diameter of propulsion nozzle is 0.8mm and air velocity of wafer propulsion is $50\sim150m/s$. We found that the experimental results of the wafer transportation speed were well agreed with the numerical ones. Namely, the predicted values of the maximum wafer transportation speed are higher than those values of experimental data by 16% and the numerical result of the mean wafer transportation speed is higher than the experimental result within 20%.
An experimental study was performed on the collision nozzle system that generates microbubble by air self-suction using a venturi nozzle. This study experimentally investigates the pressure of a pump and a dissolution tank, water flow rate, air self-suction amount and microbubble generation amount. The experimental conditions were varied by changing the diameter of the collision nozzle (de=4,5,6,7,8mm), the pumping power(0.5hp, 1.0hp) and the capacity of the dissolution tank(4.4L, 8/8L). The pressure change of the pump according to the outlet diameter of the collision nozzle showed that the 1.0hp pump power operated more stably than the 0.5hp pump. The pressure change in the dissolution tank was shown to decrease rapidly as the outlet diameter of the nozzle increased. The flow rate of recirculating water was shown to increase as the nozzle diameter increased. Additionally, it was shown that the pump capacity of 1.0hp increased the flow rate more than that of 0.5hp. The self-suction air flow rate was shown to occur above de=6mm, and the air flow rate increased as the nozzle diameter increased. Also, as the pump capacity increased, the self-suction amount of air increased. It was shown that the amount of microbubble less than 50mm generated was maximum when the nozzle diameter was 6mm, the pump power was 1.0hp, and the dissolution tank capacity was 8.8L.
This study was conducted to develop an agaricus bisporus washing machine which uses compressed air to remove foreign materials attached on the surface of agaricus bisporus. A prototype of the washing machine was constructed, and performance of removing foreign materials was tested. Research results are as follows: 1. Several transferring methods including PE roller rotation, brush roller rotation, PE screw rotation, vibration plate, and belt conveyor were evaluated. Roller, screw, and vibration methods caused damages on the surface of the products, but belt conveyor method caused the least damages. 2. For air jet, a stationary nozzle type and a rotational type were evaluated. The best air jet nozzle was the jet-type nozzle, and the rotational type was more effective than stationary type nozzle. 3. With the conveyer belt, box type moving method and the rotational air jet nozzle, the washing machine showed the best performance when higher than 5.4${\times}$105 Pa of air jet pressure and lower than 0.047 m/s of moving speed was used. Working performance of the system was 650 kg/h, and the damaging rate was 1.2 %.
