The purpose of this study was to compare the performance characteristics of Andersen and total suspended particulate (TSP) samplers in terms of particle size distribution (PSD) and mass sampling efficiency. In the present study, two Andersen and four TSP samplers were selected and tested to quantitatively estimate human exposure to fly ash representing industrial particulate matter (PM) in a carefully controlled chamber. The PSD characteristics, a mass median aerodynamic diameter and a geometric standard deviation, were found from the sampled PM of airborne samplers in the chamber. An Andersen sampler was compared with a TSP sampler quantified by a coulter counter multisizer, as a reference sampler, to describe the correlation of mass sampling efficiencies between two types of samplers. Overall results indicate that Andersen samplers overestimated small PM due to particle bounce phenomena between impaction stages. There was reasonably good correlation ($R^2$ = 0.89 and 0.91) between the mass sampling efficiencies of Andersen and TSP samplers during the two tests. However, the lower values of slope (0.71 and 0.72) in two tests showed that the Andersen sampler underestimated PM (> AD $10.1\;{\mu}m$) with sufficient inertia due to a relatively lower Andersen inlet velocity at 0.8 m/s comparing with the operating air velocity at 2.1 m/s in the sampling zone of a chamber.
For improved preservation of boiled-dried anchovies, the current preservation method of corrugated-cardboard box packaging and freezing below -18$^{\circ}C$ was compared to the nylon/polyethylene(NY/PE) packaging along with cooling temperature ranging from 5$^{\circ}C$ to 1$0^{\circ}C$ as well as ambient condition for eight months by determining physicochemical quality of stored samples. Lipid oxidation of stored anchovies and their browning increased with storage time. The phenomenon was delayed under the conditions of lower temperature and air-tight packaging. As quality-indicative criteria of stored anchovies, carbonyl value(r=-0.989), browning (r=-0.949) and color a value(r=-0.989), browning(r=-0.965), Hunter's color b value(r=-0.949) and color a value(r=-0.940) showed a highly-negative correlations with organoleptic qualities of the samples. Based on the above results, air-tight packaging in a laminated film and subsequent storage at cooling temperature was found to be a possible alternative to the current freezing-storage of boiled-dried anchovies from the physicochemical point of view.

The present investigation studied the welding fumes produced during the arc welding process at a shipyard. The air at the shipyard was sampled (between February and May, 1990) to determine the total welding fume concentration, its heavy metal content and the concentrations of different sized particles of the welding fumes. The results were as follows : 1. Forty-four out of 50 samples showed welding fume concentrations which exceeding the threshold limit value of $5mg/m^3$. The geometric mean of welding fume concentration was $9.73mg/m^3$ ($2.14-24.86mg/m^3$), and the nighest level was found at the dock assembly shop ($12.0mg/m^3$). 2. The welding fume concentration measured with personal air sampler was 4.2 times greater than that measured with area sampler. 3. Of the heavy metals analyzed, Fe was found to be the most concentrated at $1.29mg/m^3$ ; it constitued 13.3% of the total welding fume concentration. 4. Of the different sized particles that make up the welding fumes, there was a tendency for the smaller particles to be more concentrated. Particles that measured $7{\mu}$ or less in diameter constituted 85.8% of the total welding fume concentration.

Respirator fit testing is required before entering specific work environmentals to ensure that the respirator worn satisfies a minimum of fit and that the user knows when the respirator fits properly. The fit of a respirator can be determined by qualitative (QLFT) or quantitative fit test (QNFT). The QNFT, having been universally accepted more than the QLFT, provide an objective and numerical basis by measuring a fit factor (FF). Until a few years age, only one QNFT technigue was available and accepted by U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations. In the 1980's and 1990's, several new and fundamentally different QNFT methods were developed. Two of the newer methods are commercially availale and are accepted by OSHA as suitable alternatives. In this articles, the principle of operation of each ONFT technique is explained and each technique's major advantages and disadvantages are pointed out. Emphasis is given to negative-pressure air-purifying respirators, as they are in most frequent use today. The requirements and recommendations for fit testing positive-pressure respirators are discussed as well. Finally, the presently available QNFT standards and regulations are summarized to assist the user in making fit testing decisions.

To predict contaminant concentrations within a multi-zone work environment, an air quality model in the work environment was developed. To do this, airflow equations on the basis of orifice equation were solved by using the Conte and De Boor scheme, and then equations for the conservation of mass on contaminant were solved by using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta algorithm. To validate the accuracy of simulated results, this model was applied to the controlled environment chamber that had been tested in 1998 by Chung KC. The comparison of predicted concentrations by this study with measured concentrations by the Chung KC indicated that the average deviations were 2.66, 3.35, and 3.15% for zone 1, zone 2, and zone 3, respectively. Also, this model was applied to a working plant with four zones. Thus, the results of contaminant concentration versus time were predicted according to the schedule of the openings operation, and case studies were done for four cases of the openings operation to investigate the interaction of airflow and contaminant concentration. The results indicated that opening operation schedules had a significant effect on contaminant removal efficiency. Therefore, this model might be able to apply for the design of ventilation schedules to control contaminants optimally.

Ventilation effect is analyzed for boiler building with multiple heat sources. Air flow inside the boiler building is characterized as turbulent mixed convection. Analysis methodology is set up with two different $k-{\varepsilon}$ type models (standard $k-{\varepsilon}$, RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$). Two different cases with high and low outside temperature are analyzed. In case of high outside temperature condition, mixed convection is well realized inside the boiler building. With different upper louver opening rate, air flow is also well established and proper opening rate is found to meet design limit in case of low outside temperature condition. Difference of analysis results for two different turbulence models are not significant. Therefore, analysis methodology with simple $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is found to be reliable for the boiler building ventilation analysis. However, more simplified geometrical model is desired to expand its application.

The purpose of this study was to compare performances of two analytical methods, the OSHA 42 and the NIOSH 5522, of quantifying total isocyanates in air. These methods were compared in terms of accuracy and precision and the detection limits using four(4) spiked samples in each of four(4) concentration levels which ranged from 0.25 to 2.0 times of the ACGIH TLV-TWA. In addition, two methods were used to as sess airborne concentrations of total isocyanates at the following processes including autobody spray painting, furniture spray painting, polyurethane foaming, urethane adhesion, UV coating, and pigment mixing. The results of this study showed that the NIOSH 5522 method was better than the OSHA 42 method in terms of accuracy, precis ion, and detection limit for quantifying airborne total isocyanates. It was also clear that the NIOSH method was capable of detecting not only monomeric but also non-monomeric isocyanates. The results of air concentrations of total isocyanates among processes studied indicate that some processes may exceed the recommended level of isocyanates. In addition, to evaluate toxicological effects of total isocyanates, it is recommended to consider additive effects of isocyanates present in mixtures.

This study was performed to evaluate the hand-arm vibration of the steel processing factory workers. Measurement, evaluation and as sessment were based on the International Standard(ISO 5349). The frequency weighted accelerations of the various hand-held tools and total exposure time were measured to assess the periods for the white finger symptom to occur. As a result, it was found that the air angle grinder and the air baby grinder are more harmful than other hand-held tools. It was also found that using various vibratory tools together is more harmful than using a single tool.
Microbial populations of total aerobic bacteria and coliforming bacteria, TBA, Hunter's color value, heme pigments, muscle protein solubility, cooking loss and shear force were investigated fro evaluating the shelf life of chicken legs gamma-irradiated at doses of 1, 3, 5 and 10 kGy with air-contained and vacuum-packaged methods. The initial microbial populations decreased with gamma irradiation depending upon the dose, and microorganisms in the vacuum-packaged samples were inhibited more than those in the air-contained samples. Hunter's L and a values of the surface and inside of the legs increased by gamma irradiation, showing a bright red color and the red color was maintained during the storage of both samples. The concentrations of oxymyoglobin among the heme pigments increased by gamma irradiation. Muscle protein solubility slightly increased by increasing the applied dose. There were no significant differences in the cooking loss and shear force values. In conclusion, the combination of gamma irradiation and vacuum-packaging could extend the shelf life of chilled chicken without deterioration of the quality.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to develop a new sterilization plasma device that would be proficient at sterilizing and removing pathogenic bacteria and viruses, and applicable to air purification systems. Methods: In order to understand the performance characteristics, the discharge characteristics of a packed bed DBD reactor and the ozone reduction characteristics of an ozone filter installed at the outlet of the reactor were investigated. Results: The novel packed-bed DBD reactor was proposed, and it was confirmed that the plasma discharge was uniformly and stably discharged throughout the entire layer, and sufficient ozone was generated for sterilization. The ozone filter was tested for three methods: adsorption, adsorption-decomposition, and catalytic decomposition. When the filter thickness was 30 mm, the ozone concentrations were 0.03 ppm, 0.01 ppm, and 0.21 ppm, respectively. The adsorption and adsorption-decomposition methods satisfied the EPA standard of less than 0.05ppm, but the catalytic decomposition method did not. Conclusions: It was confirmed that the adsorption-decomposition method has relatively excellent ozone filter performance and can provide the best ozone filter.
