  • Chrysanthemum production would benefit from crop growth simulations, which would support decision-making in crop management. Chrysanthemum is a typical short day plant of which floral initiation and development is sensitive to photoperiod. We developed a model to predict phenological development and leaf appearance of chrysanthemum (cv. Baekseon) using daylength (including civil twilight period), air temperature, and management options like light interruption and ethylene treatment as predictor variables. Chrysanthemum development stage (DVS) was divided into juvenile (DVS=1.0), juvenile to budding (DVS=1.33), and budding to flowering (DVS=2.0) phases for which different strategies and variables were used to predict the development toward the end of each phenophase. The juvenile phase was assumed to be completed at a certain leaf number which was estimated as 15.5 and increased by ethylene application to the mother plant before cutting and the transplanted plant after cutting. After juvenile phase, development rate (DVR) before budding and flowering were calculated from temperature and day length response functions, and budding and flowering were completed when the integrated DVR reached 1.33 and 2.0, respectively. In addition the model assumed that leaf appearance terminates just before budding. This model predicted budding date, flowering date, and leaf appearance with acceptable accuracy and precision not only for the calibration data set but also for the validation data set which are independent of the calibration data set.

  • We present experimental data on the time response behavior of industrial platinum resistance thermometers (IPRT) to help with the selection of proper sensors in industry and research laboratories. Time constants of IPRTs were measured using a method specified in ASTM standards. Two different sensors of different protecting sheath diameters were tested in air, water and silicon oil at temperatures from $0^{\circ}C$ to $200^{\circ}C$. The time constant was the smallest in water and the highest in air. As the test temperature increased, time constants tended to decrease at all heat conducting media. For different diameters of sheath of IPRT at the same temperature, it was found that the IPRT of larger diameter showed higher time constant in air, but the opposite dependence was observed in water and oil. From the measured results, it was suggested that the sensor diameter and heat conducting medium should be considered if one wants to select proper thermometer to measure the dynamic temperature change in industry and research area.

  • Absorbed dose dosimetry protocols of high energy photon and electron beams, which are widely used and based on an air kerma calibration factors, have somewhat complex formalism and limitations for improving dosimetric accuracy due to uncertainty of the physical parameters used. Recently the IAEA and the AAPM published the absorbed dose to water-based dosimetry protocol. In this work web-based dose calibration program for IAEA TRS-398 and AAPM TG-51 protocols were developed. This program developed using the Visual C$\#$ language can be used in the internet. User selectable dosimetry protocol on the web allows the absorbed dose to water data of the two protocols at a reference point to be easily compared, and enables to conveniently manage and understand the current status of the dosimetry calibration performed at participating institutions in korea. This program and the resultant database from the web-based calibration can be useful in developing new dosimetry protocols in Korea.

  • Airborne laser mapping is the latest and fastest method for generating 3D data. By now, elevation data was mainly acquired using air photos. But this way takes long time from land control surveying to digital visualization. Airborne laser mapping does not need any ground control after system calibration. In this paper, power line and electric tower areas were measured. And using the 3D laser result and digital camera images, contour lines and mosaic images was generated and the accuracy was presented. Airborne laser mapping and digital camera have a full capacity to substitute existing methods for electric and landscape works.

  • For measuring the error motion of ultra-precision spindle, eliminating the geometric errors is a must. Unless it is achieved, geometric errors will be dominant in data. Here, the roundness error and alignment error between spindle and sensor are to be removed. That's because typical error range of such spindle is muchless than geometric one. A capacitive transducer of cylidricalshape was developed, which takes full advantage of the spatial-averaging effect by using large area compared tpo the geometric error. This idea was first proposed by Chapman and here it is modified for better performance with nomical gap of 50 .mu. m and with newly designed guards which encompass the respective sensor to rectify the electrical field distribution in good shape. The measurement system is made to get the orbit of Ultra-Precision Air Spindle which is supposed to have its runout under 1 .mu. m. The Calibration data of this sensor is presented and the spindle orbit from 2000rpm to 5500rpm is showed. It is quite reasonable to use this sensor in the range of 60 .mu. m with an accuracy of several tens of nm.

  • To properly assess air pollution levels, application of quality assurance and quality control(QA/QC) is believed to be an essential step. In order to cope with such scientific principle, a field study was designed with an aim of comparing: 1) the methods of calibration for airborne pollutants and 2) the protocols developed for their measurements. Measurements were made at Han Yang University, Seoul during 29 May through 1 June 1998 under the management of the Division of Measurements and Analysis(DMA) of Korean Society for Atmospheric Environment(KOSAE). In this work, we report our results of intercomparative measurements on several gaseous criteria pollutants that were investigated mainly by the two institutes-Seoul National University(SNU) and the Korean Research Institute for Standards and Science(KRISS). Although measurements of major gaseous pollutants had been made routinely by many scientific institutes and organizations in Korea, most scientists involved in those studieswere obliged to do their experiments on the basis of their own procedural steps spaning from the preparation of gaseous standards to the methodological selections for the calibration. Hence, this campaign offered a unique opportunity to examine many important aspects on the measurements of these important gaseous pollutants. In the course of our study, we investigated the compatibility of data sets obtained by the two institutes in concert with reference data sets collected concurrently from a government-managed monitoring station. On the basis of our study, we conclude that different data sets made by different participants during this campaign agree well within the reasonable range of uncertainties.low, which indicated that during this period the potential acidity of precipitation was high but the neutralizing capacity was low. For Spring, pAi was very low but pH was slightly high. This was likely due to the large amount of $CaCO_3$ in the soil particles transported over a long range from the Chinese continent that were incorporated into the precipitation, and then neutralized the acidifying species with its high concentraton.

  • The present study developed a new technique with no physical object on the flow stream but enabling the air flow measurement and easily incorporated with the devices for cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR) procedure. A turbulence chamber was formed in the middle of the respiratory tube by locally enlarging the cross-sectional area where the flow related turbulence was generated inducing energy loss which was in turn converted into pressure difference. The turbulence chamber was simply an empty enlarged air space, thus no physical object existed on the flow stream, but still the flow rate could be evaluated. Computer simulation demonstrated stable turbulence formation big enough to measure. Experiment was followed on the proto-type transducer, the results of which were within ${\pm}5%$ error compared to the simulation data. Both inspiratory and expiratory flows were obtained with symmetric measurement characteristics. Quadratic curve fitting provided excellent calibration formula with a correlation coefficient>0.999(P<0.0001) and the mean relative error<1%. The present results can be usefully applied to accurately monitor the air flow rate during CPR.

  • The pavement performance model is the most important factor to determine the pavement life in the mechanistic-empirical pavement design guide (MEPDG). As part of Korean Pavement Research Program (KPRP), the Korean Pavement Design Guide (KPDG) is currently being developed based on mechanistic-empirical principle. In this paper, the rutting prediction model of asphalt mixtures, one of the pavement performance model, has been developed using triaxial repeated loading testing data. This test was conducted on various types of asphalt mixtures for investigating the rutting characteristics by varying with the temperature and air void. The calibration process was made for the coefficients of rutting prediction model using the accelerated pavement testing data. The accuracy of prediction model can be increased when by considering the effect of individual rutting properties of materials rather than shear stresses with depths.

  • Experiment and numerical calculation have been peformed to investigate mixed convection heat transfer between inclined parallel plates. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) with thermo-sensitive liquid crystal (TLC) tracers is used for visualizing and analysis. This method allows simultaneous measurement of velocity and temperature fields at a given instant of time. Quantitative data of the temperature and velocity are obtained by applying the color-image processing to a visualized image, and neural network is applied to the color-to-temperature calibration. The governing equations are discretized using the finite volume method. The results are presented for the Reynolds number ranges from 0.004 to 0.062, the angle of inclination, ${\Theta}$, from 0 to 45 degree and Prandtl number of the high viscosity fluid is 909. The results show velocity, temperature and mean Nusselt numbers distributions. It is found that the periodic flow of mixed convection between inclined parallel plates is shown at $0^{\circ}{\leq}{\Theta}<30^{\circ}$, Re<0.062, and the flow pattern can be classified into three patterns which depend on Reynolds number and the angle of inclination. The minimum Nusselt numbers occur at Re=0.05 regardless of the angle of inclination.

  • The full results of troubleshooting process related to the flight control system of a tilt-rotor type UAV in the flight tests are described. Flight tests were conducted in helicopter, conversion, and airplane modes. The vehicle was flown using automatic functions, which include speed-hold, altitude-hold, heading-hold, guidance modes, as well as automatic take-off and landing. Many unexpected problems occurred during the envelope expansion tests which were mostly under those automatic functions. The anomalies in helicopter mode include vortex ring state (VRS), long delay in the automatic take-off, and the initial overshoot in the automatic landing. In contrast, the anomalies in conversion mode are untrimmed AOS oscillation and the calibration errors of the air data sensors. The problems of low damping in rotor speed and roll rate responses are found in airplane mode. Once all of the known problems had been solved, the vehicle in airplane mode gradually reached the maximum design speed of 440km/h at the operation altitude of 3km. This paper also presents a comprehensive detailing of the control systems of the tilt-rotor unmanned air vehicle (UAV).
