  • The real chip and similarity model were used to investigate the thermal behavior and velocity distribution of air from the heat source with the location and the amount of heat experimentally and numerically, and compared. The heat generated in the block is not cooled by convection and show the high temperature by the stagnation of heat flow. After maintaining the high temperature of block by the natural convection, the sudden drop of temperature with the air flow was shown in the channel but the decreasing rate was small with the time. The inward block was effected by infinitesimal air flow generated between block and channel and outward block was effected by the entry condition.

  • Liquid water in flow channel is an important factor that limits the steady and transient performance of PEM fuel cells. A computational fluid dynamics study based on the volume-of-fluid [VOF] multi-phase model was conducted to understand the two-phase flow behavior of liquid water in cathode gas channels. The liquid water transport in $180^{\circ}{\Delta}$ bends was investigated, where the effects of surface characteristics (hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces], channel geometries (rectangular and chamfered corners], and air velocity in channel were discussed. The two-phase flow behavior of liquid water with hydrophilic channel surface and that with hydrophobic surface was found very different; liquid water preferentially flows along the corners of flow channel in hydrophilic channels while it flows in rather spherical shape in hydrophobic channels. The results showed that liquid water transport was generally enhanced when hydrophobic channel with rounded corners was used. However, the surface characteristics and channel geometries became less important when air velocity was increased over 10m/s. This study is believed to provide a useful guideline for design optimization of flow patterns or channel configurations of PEM fuel cells.

  • The conjugate heat transfer from a protruding module in a horizontal channel with a variation of air temperature is experimentally investigated. It is an aim of this study is to estimate temperature difference between a module and air. This study is performed with a variation of parameters that are air temperatures($T_i,=25^{\circ}C{\sim}55^{\circ}C),$ thermal resistance($R_c=158 K/W),$ air velocities ( 4V_i=0.1$ m/s~l.5 m/s ), and input power (Q=3 W, 7 W ). The results show that as the thermal resistance increases, the effect of air temperatures are decreased. And input power was most effective parameter on the temperature difference between a module and air.

  • The conjugate heat transfer from the simulated module in a horizontal channel with the variation of inlet air temperature is experimentally investigated. The aim of this study is to estimate temperature difference between a module and inlet air. This study is performed with the variation of parameters that are inlet air temperature(Ti=25~$55^{\circ}C), thermal resistance( $R_c$=0.05, 4.11, 158 K/W), inlet air velocity(Vi=0.1~1.5m/s), and input power(Q=3, 7 W). The results show that the effect of inlet air temperature is little, at the case of using conductive board. And input power was most effective parameter on the temperature difference between module and Inlet air.

대향류 핀삽입형 재생증발식 냉방기 연구 (Study on the Counterflow Regenerative Evaporative Cooler with Finned Channels)

  • The regenerative evaporative cooler(REC) is to cool a stream of air using evaporative cooling effect without an increase in the humidity ratio. In the regenerative evaporative cooler, the air can be cooled down to a temperature lower than its inlet wet-bulb temperature. Besides the cooling performance, for practical application of the regenerative evaporative cooler, the compactness of the system is also a very important factor to be considered. In this respect, three different configurations, i.e., the flat plate type, the corrugated plate type, and the finned channel type are investigated and compared for the most compact configuration. The optimal structure of each configuration is obtained individually to minimize the volume for a given effectiveness within a limit of the pressure drop. Comparing the three optimal structures, the finned channel type is found to give the most compact structure among the considered configurations. The volume of the regenerative cooler can be reduced to 1/8 by adopting the finned channel type as compared to that of the flat plate type.

좁은 채널 내부의 수직 혼합 경계층에 형성된 메탄-공기 에지-화염의 안정화 기초 실험 (A Fundamental Experiment on the Stabilization of a Methane-Air Edge Flame in a Cross-Flowing Mixing Layer in a Narrow Channel)

  • Flame stabilization characteristics were experimentally investigated in a fuel-air cross flowing mixing layer. A combustor consists of a narrow channel of air steam and a cross flowing fuel. Depending on the flow rates of methane and air, flame can be stabilized in two modes. First is an attached flame which is formulated at the backward step where the methane and air streams meet. Second is a lifted-flame which is formulated within the mixing layer far down steam from backward step. The heights and flame widths of the lifted flames were measured. Flame shapes of the lifted flames were similar to an ordinary edge flame or a tribrachial flame, and their behavior could be explained with the theories of an edge flame. With the increase of the mixing time between fuel and air, the fuel concentration gradient decreases and the flame propagation velocity increases. Thus the flame is stabilized where the flow velocity is matched to the flame propagation velocity in spite of a significant disturbance in the fuel mixing and heat loss within the channel. This study provides many experimental results for a higher fuel concentration gradient, and it can also be helpful for the development and application of a smaller combustor.

충돌 공기제트에서 국한 유로 내 발포 알루미늄 방열기의 열전달 수치해석 (A Numerical Study on Beat Transfer from an Aluminum Foam Heat Sink by Impinging Air Jet in a Confined Channel)

  • A numerical study has been carried out to investigate the flow and heat transfer from an aluminum foam heat sink in a confined channel. A uniform heat flux is given at the bottom of the aluminum foam heat sink, which is horizontally placed on the heated surface. The channel walls are assumed to be adiabatic. Cold air is supplied from the top opening of the channel and exhausted to the channel outlet. Comprehensive numerical solutions are acquired to the governing Wavier-Stokes and energy equations, using the Brinkman-Forchheimer extended Darcy model and the local thermal non-equilibrium model f3r the region of porous media. Details of flow and thermal fields are examined over wide ranges of the principal parameters; i.e., the Reynolds number Re, the height of heat sink h/H, porosity $\varepsilon$and pore diameter ratio $R_{H}$.

  • The characteristics of conjugated heat transfer in the inclined channel was experimentally investigated. The simulated module is attached to the bottom of the inclined channel and is heated with constant heat flux. The experimental parameters of this study are input power (Q = 3, 7W), inlet air velocity ($V_{i}=0.1{\sim}0.9m/s$) and inclined channel angle (${\varphi}=0{\sim}90^{\circ}$). The results show that input power was most effective parameter on the temperature differences between module and air. As the inclined channel angle increases, the temperatures of the module are increased. And we obtained the best condition on the conductive board when ${\varphi}=0^{\circ}$.

제습제와 채널이 제습로터 성능에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Desiccant and Channel Geometries on the Performance of Desiccant Rotor)

  • The desiccant rotor is the most essential component of desiccant cooling system, but one of its drawbacks to spread out is rotor size. To reduce the size of rotor the analysis of rotor performance is crucial. Systematic examination on the effect of desiccant and channel geometries has been conducted based on the numerical program previously developed. Considered parameters related to channel geometries are channel shape and cross section area of channel, and parameters related to desiccant are mass fraction, heat capacity, density, maximum water uptake and separation factor of isotherm. Considerable reduction of rotor size is expected by adjusting the parameters.

지그재그채널 PCHE의 각도에 따른 열전달 및 압력강하특성 (Heat Transfer and Pressure Drop Characteristics in Zigzag Channel Angles of Printed Circuit Heat Exchangers)

  • The objectives of this paper are to study the characteristics of heat transfer and pressure drop of the zigzag channel PCHE using diffusion bonding technology by numerical analysis. PCHE of five types are designed, which are zigzag channel angle 180$^{\circ}$, 160$^{\circ}$, 140$^{\circ}$, 120$^{\circ}$ and 100$^{\circ}$. The zigzag PCHE was numerically investigated for Reynolds number in a range of 150$\sim$800. The temperatures of the hot side were performed at 80$^{\circ}$ while that of the cold side was conducted at 20$^{\circ}C$. The results show that the performance of heat transfer rate for zigzag channel 100$^{\circ}$ increases about 11.5% compared to that of zigzag channel 180$^{\circ}$. On the other hand, the performance of pressure drop for zigzag channel 100$^{\circ}$ is remarkably higher than that of zigzag channel 180$^{\circ}$, about 2.4 times.
