  • Recently, instead of hot air type dryers that require a lot of heat, energy-efficient heat pump dryers have been used in various fields such as paper, textile, wood, food, etc. In this paper, the characteristics of heat pump cycle were theoretically evaluated with hot-gas bypass system to further improve the energy efficiency by minimizing the use of electric heaters in early warm-up stage of the dryers for frozen agricultural products. In addition, damper system that leads outside air to flow into the dryer were optimized to obtain extra heat for higher energy efficiency.

  • A small scale solar greenhouse tray dryer suitable for one or few farmer households is designed in place of sunny ground to dry various agricultural products. The tests on the drying of paddy, groundnut and radish slices by this drying unit have been made. The results indicated that this drying unit had a good heat collecting property, a low heat consumption (4518.7-5676.1 KJ per kg water removal) , a high heat utilizing efficiency (43.75%-54,25%) , a low operation cost (0.057 kwh-0.078 kwh per kg water removal) and good drying quality.

  • Samples of banana were dried in a two-stage heat pump dryer capable of producing stepwise control of the inlet drying air temperature while keeping absolute humidity constant. Two stepwise air temperature profiles were tested. The incremental temperature step change in temperature of the drying air about the mean air temperature of 30 $^{\circ}C$ was 5 $^{\circ}C$. The total drying time for each temperature-time profile was about 300 minutes. The drying kinetics and color change of the products dried under these stepwise variation of the inlet air temperature were measured and compared with constant air temperature drying. The stepwise air temperature variation was found to yield better quality product in terms of color of the dried product. Further, it was found that by employing a step-down temperature profile, it was possible to reduce the drying time to reach the desired moisture content.

  • Experiments for drying radish were carried out to analyze the drying characteristics and quality evaluation between solar heated-air drying and natural air drying system. Solar heated-air drying system consists of a small fan, a solar air heater and a tunnel dryer. Simulation model for thermal environments of solar collector was developed to investigate the effect of solar radiation and airflow rate on thermal performance.

  • A newly devised dryer with heated air for the farm products, especially suited for high water content materials such as red pepper, Beer ground, each Vegetables, and Low water content materials such as Rough rice was tested for its thermal efficiency and drying mechanism, and the optimum conditions for each sample were established. In order to improve the present rural situation of drying farm products which entirely dependent upon natural solar radiation, a study upon an economic multi-parpose dryer was conducted. A series of drying tests were run first with red pepper which is one of the important cash crop in Korean farm. And successive series of tests were also run with such proaucts as garlic, sweet potatoes, green onion, radish, Beer ground and Rough rice. The results from the above experiment in drying system with heat dryer can be summarized as follows. 1. Drying duration could be shortened by the tempering effect in high water content crop such as red pepper and beer ground. 2. The color changes occured in around 20% water content in red pepper. The degree of color change was heavily affected by high temperature and short drying duration. 3. The drying condition of red pepper was most favourable at the temperature of 85$^{\circ}C$ in early stage and 80$^{\circ}C$ in middle stage and 75$^{\circ}C$ at the final stage, and with the air rate of 0.81㎥/sec and with sample amount of 200kg. 4. The drying condition of Rough rice(I.R.667) was most favourable at the templature of 40$^{\circ}C$ in early stage and 35$^{\circ}C$ in middle stage and final stage and with the air rate of 0.2㎥/sec and with sample amount of 75kg. 5. In order to prevent the color change of red pepper and to assure high efficiency in drying mechanism, it was necessary to lower the temperature as the time passes in drying process. 6. For vege tables, the drying rate were short in early stage and there was also tempering effect. However, for garlics, Constant drying rates through the early and final stages were observed and there were no tempering effects. 7. QUALITY OF KOREAN GINSENG DRIED WITH A PROTOTYPE CONTINUOUS FLOW DRYER USING FAR INFRARED RAY AND HEATED-AIR

  • This study was performed to examine the effects of infrared (IR)/heated-air combination drying on some quality attributes of Korean white ginsengs. Ginseng roots were dried in a dryer where both the far infrared ray and heated-air are available as drying energy sources. Diametral shrinkage, external color, total saponin content, and ginsenosides and free sugar composition of the IR/heated-air combination dried ginsengs were measured and compared with those of commercial white ginseng products. The external color became lower in lightness and higher in saturation as the IR radiating plate temperature increased. IR/heated-air combination dried white ginsengs at IR plate temperature of 100$^{\circ}C$ was comparable to the commercial white ginseng products in color characteristics. Diametral shrinkage ratios ranged from 20 to 36% and appeared to be independent on the different drying methods. No definite evidence could be found whether the IR/heated-air combination drying and the conventional. hot-air drying practice resulted in white ginsengs having different ginsenoside contents and compositions. No conclusion could be made on whether the various drying treatments used in the study had effects on the free sugar contents and compositions of white ginsengs.

  • Mulberry fruit is common to keep a frozen storage because of the very high water content. Because freezing-storing cost is generated before the processing or sales, farmers of mulberry fruit production are weighted in financial burden. In addition, mulberry fruit has difficulty in expanding consumption by made in the simple processed products like the mulberry jam, mulberry juice, mulberry enzyme, alcohol, etc. Recent, frozen fruits including frozen blueberries, frozen strawberries, frozen mango, frozen rich, frozen mulberry fruit has been started to sell in the large discount stores and convenience stores. However, there is restricted sales in only special place that have the frozen distribution facilities. So, for the income improvement and consumption promotion of mulberry farmers facing these difficult situations, we developed the processing method of semi-dried mulberry fruit using the vacuum freezing dryer. The frozen mulberry fruit which was stored below $-40^{\circ}C$ is to dry in a vacuum freeze dryer, at $30{\sim}35^{\circ}C$, 23 ~ 24 hours. Semi-dried mulberry fruit seperated respectively. It had soft texture, and maintained shape, size and flavor. In particular, semi-dried mulberry fruit can be stored at room temperature.

Drying Characteristics by Infrared Heating of agricultural products (원적외선 가열에 의한 농산물의 건조특성)

  • Infrared heating has been traditionally used in industrial applications for processes such as dehydration of food industrial. This heating method involves the application of radiation in the wavelength range of 2 to 50 micrometers. In this work, simultaneous heat balance equations were developed to simulate the infrared radiation heating of agricultural products. The equations assume that moisture diffuses to the outer boundaries of the material in liquid form and evaporation occurs at the surface of the agricultural products. Energy for moisture evaporation is supplied by the infrared radiant energy. The optimum temperature and drying time for the best drying conditions of changing the red peppers with the moisture content of 18% and the restore rate of 80~85% are $80^{\circ}C$ and 44 hours. The performance of radiation tubes coating with the radiation paint developed in this research has the energy of $2.27{\times}103W/m^2{\mu}m$, $150^{\circ}C$ within the scope of radiation wave length of $2{\sim}30{\mu}m$ and has the radiation 0.92~0.93, which is superior to the general radiation tubes. The extinction coefficient according to the band pass filter using the 4 flux theory ha higher dependability on wave length, accounting for $2{\sim}17{\mu}m$ and $5{\times}105{\sim}106m-1$. A comparison between the theoretical energy transfer whose figures are interpreted according to 4 flux theory and the experimental energy transfer of far infrared dryer leads to the findings of the agreement less than 5%.

Composting High Moisture Materials : Bio-Drying Livestock Manure in a Sequentially Fed Reactor

  • Composting has gained rapid acceptance as a method of recyling relatively dry organic materials such as leaves and brush and , when alternative disposal costs are high, even moist materials such as grass clippings and dewatered sewage sludges. However, as moisture contents rise above 60% , the need for a dry bulking amendment increase the costs of composting , both by direct purchases of amendment and though increased reactor capacity and materials handling requirements. High moisture materials also present increased risks of anaerobic odor formation through reduced oxygen transport (Miller , 1991) . These costs and operational challengers often constrain the opportunities to compost high moisture materials such as agricultural manures. During the last several decades economies of scale in livestock production have been increasing livestock densities and creating manure management challenges throughout the world. This issue is particularly pressing in Korea, where livestock arms typically manage little or no cropland, and the nutrients and boichemical oxygen demand in manure pose a serious threat to water quality. Composting has recently become popular as a means of recycling manure into products for sale off the farm, but bulking amendments (usually sawdust) are expensive designed to minimize bulking agent requirements by using the energy liberated by decompostion. In this context the composting reactor is used as a biological dryer, allowing the repeated use of bulking amendment with several batches of manure.

Heat Recovery System from Chamber of Agricual Products Dryer (농산물건조기의 배풍열 재이용 기술에 관한 연구)

  • 본 연구는 농산물을 건조할 때 배풍구로 버려지는 열을 회수하여 건조열원으로 재이용할 수 있는 배풍열 회수장치를 개발하여 연료절감 및 열회수장치의 성능을 분석한 연구 결과 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 가. 농산물건조기의 열수지를 분석한 결과 투입열량을 100%로 하였을 경우, 배기열은 13.2%, 배풍역량 77.7%, 관류열량은 9.1%로 나타났다. 나. 고추를 건조시 배풍구입구온도가 55-6$0^{\circ}C$일 때 배풍구 출구온도 41-43$^{\circ}C$, 일때 흡입구 입구온도는 25-28$^{\circ}C$, 흡입구 출구온도는 41-43$^{\circ}C$로 나타나 건조실로 41-43$^{\circ}C$의 높은 온도를 투입할 수 있었다. 다. 배풍열 량이 단위 시간당 4700kca1에서 6000kca1로 증가할 때, 흡입 열량은 2200kca1에서 3000kca1로 나타났다. 라. 고추의 초기함수율이 80%에서 15%까지 떨어지는데 관행건조는 약 27시간이 경과했으며, 배풍연회수건조를 할 경우는 약 24시간이 경과했으며 그 결과 배풍열 회수건조가 약 3시간정도 소요시간이 단축되었음을 알 수 있었음. 마. 배풍열 회수장치를 사용하여 농산물건조기 투입량의 47%, 배풍열량의 64%의 열량을 회수할 수 있었다. 바. 배풍열 회수 농산물건조기 성능시험 결과 고추 100kg 건조시 연료소모량은 43%, 건조 소요비용은 21% 감소시킬 수 있었다.
