  • The Korean government introduced the $6^{th}$ industrialization in the agricultural sector to increase farmers' income and value-added agricultural products. The U.S. government has also supported farmers' efforts to increase their income and value-added products in a similar way even though the $6^{th}$ industrialization is not the usual concept in the U.S. Especially, direct-to-consumer and intermediated marketing is one of the main methods to increase farmers' income and value-added agricultural products in the U.S. The purpose of this paper was to analyze direct-to-consumer and intermediated marketing in the U.S., through a survey and frequency analysis. The results of this study are as follows: First, U.S. farmers have shifted their concern and efforts from direct-to-consumer marketing to intermediated marketing because intermediated marketing may offer higher value-added agricultural products. However, consumers' perception and interest are higher for direct-to-consumer marketing than for intermediated marketing of agricultural products and related services. Consumers also will increase the portion of consumption of agricultural products and related services through direct-to-consumer marketing. This difference between farmers and consumers may cause difficulties in increasing farmers' income and value-added agricultural products in the U.S. Korean farmers may have same problem in the future, even though they have not encountered it yet. Especially, the Korean government needs to develop the capabilities of farmers so that they can solve this problem.

  • As the agricultural marketing environments, which are consumers' tastes and preferences, producers' involvements in marketing business, government policy and liberalization of domestic market, have rapidly changed, current marketing systems are facing transitional periods. To cope with changing marketing environments, it is desirable to develop new marketing system that efficiently direct the flow of agricutlural products from producers to consumers. Cyber-marketing system, in which producers and consumers could conduct direct transaction with each other using computer internet system, would be suggested so that marketing stages and costs can be reduced. However, for cyber-marketing to be managed successfully, it is a need to establish data base and information network system for producers' group and consumers' group and to improve the marketing functional performances such as grading, packaging, and storage system.

Organic agricultural products (OAP) has been steadily grown by an annual 36.4 percent over the past ten years, and production of OAP took up 4.5 percent of the Environmentally friendly agricultural products (EFAP) in 2009. 9,403 farmers, cultivated area 13,343ha and production 108,810 M/T in Organic agriculture are respectively formed 0.8 percent, 0.8 percent and 0.6 percent of Korea agriculture in 2009. And production of livestock products to have been certificated from the year 2005 was over 10,000M/T in 2008. OAP is mainly distributed by direct marketing system. The market size of OAP is 188.5 billion in 2008 and has been grown by an annual 30.1 percent. The price difference between OAP and general agricultural products is about 65.8 percent. Several issues on the marketing system of OAP are as follows : overcost of OAP marketing socially, imbalance of supply and demand, absence of standard price, institutional insufficiency to marketing within wholesale market, retail price inflexibility of consumer's cooperative, and so on.

  • In Korea, the industry and marketing of livestock has grown because of increases in consumers' income and changes in food consumption trends. Livestock production and consumption increased tenfold from 1970 to 2018, and this rise will continue. However, the quality of marketing information for Korean livestock has remained low. The Korea Institute for Animal Products Quality Evaluation (KAPE) operates programs that provide marketing information on livestock, but the social benefits of these programs have not been objectively evaluated. The purpose of this study was to estimate the social benefit of the programs offering marketing information on Korean livestock. Survey and analysis using an economic model (double-bounded dichotomous choice contingent valuation model), revealed a few findings. First, the users of the marketing information programs offered by KAPE recognized the value of these programs and demonstrated their willingness to pay for this marketing information. Second, the social values of the programs offering marketing information on livestock were estimated as 1.1 billion won (marketing information on main livestock) or 5.3 billion won (price information on poultry), and these social values were 2 or 6 times greater than the cost to operate the programs for offering information. Finally, the program that provides marketing information on domestic livestock provides sufficient social benefits, so KAPE should expand these programs.
